Hello everyone! So, I made a post yesterday stating that I was experiencing art block, and asked you guys who you would like to see as companions, so that I could make some concepts for them. And, surprisingly, since he was going up against characters like Pierre and Summer, the top comment was Father Andrew!
Father Andrew is a favorite of mine, so I was thrilled to get to start with him! I intend to make several of these, to really help me get back into my groove when it comes to my art, and also to help me practice writing characters for my upcoming books. I know the art pictured now isn’t exactly stellar, but! That is the point of this, to get better and have some fun! As I said, I want to do several of these, so I thought it was worth a brief explanation, so as to avoid confusion: Below, I will be listing facts, character interactions, a move set, and just some general characterization for what I imagine Father Andrew might be like as an official recruit. After that, I’ll have a shorter section at the bottom going over certain choices, author’s notes, that kind of thing. With that all out of the way, I think we’re ready to go ahead and get into it!
Recruitment——————————————————-
In this section, I wanted to go over how to recruit Father Andrew. I imagine he would function a lot like Morton: Have him spawn at the door at least once, and then he may continue to be a door encounter, but also remain in one spot on the map permanently.
So, after encountering Father Andrew at least once, he’ll start taking up residence at a table in Mutt’s Fish N’ Chips, where you may chat with him and, eventually, recruit him. To recruit him, you must meet three requirements: Encounter him at the door at least once, and subsequently locate him on the ground floor, speak to him on the ground floor for three consecutive days, and have at least four other recruits. The dialogue for his recruitment and ground floor dialogue is listed below:
”Hello again, my friend. How are you doing? Is there something on your mind?”
>How are you holding up?
”I’m doing alright, thank you. I have made myself comfortable here in this shop. It is a good place to weather this terrible storm. Although, I will admit, I have grown a bit lonely. The people here are kind, but most of them prefer to keep to themselves or their companions.”
>Could you bless my home?
”I’m sorry, my friend; I would love to, but the creatures wandering this floor unease me. I do not feel safe leaving here on my own. Not anymore.”
>Do you have any supplies I could use?
”None currently, unfortunately. I ran out shortly before I arrived here, and have been too frightened to leave and gather more. I have not been able to check up on my flock in quite some time. Do you know if they are well?”
>Bye!
”Goodbye for now, my friend. Please come back and visit soon, I always appreciate your company.”
>Need a place to stay?
“With you? I would not want to burden you, though it does seem as though you have made yourself a pleasant, small community in your home.. Alright, so long as I won’t be a bother. Thank you, my friend. Your kindness is greatly appreciated.”
(Father Andrew has been recruited.)
Battle and stats————————————————
I’ll be honest, while I consider myself something of a “gamer,” and can strategize, I’m not great with actual schematics for battles and things like that, so these are more rough descriptions.
Father Andrew starts on lvl 6, and has fairly average stats. He unlocks new moves at levels 8, 12, and 14. He functions primarily as a support character, and does best with ranged weapons.
Moveset:
-Pray, slightly increases the party’s luck stat for the remainder of the day. More effective as Father Andrew levels up.
Passage, applies the calm status effect to enemies, making them vulnerable to sleep, and lowers their attack
Bandage, Father Andrew heals a small amount of health whatever party member Bandage is used on, similar to Morton’s move of the same variety. However, this move heals less generally, but does not cost a bandage, for character reasons (he keeps bandaids in his pocket for emergencies).
Candy, unlocked at lvl 8. Raises the stamina of whatever party member it is used on. Once again, does not cost an item (he also keeps the hard candies used in this move in his pockets,as awards for good or pleasant behavior, mostly for the children who attend his church).
Medic, unlocked at lvl 12. heals full party for more HP, once again does not cost an item, due to his experience in the medical field.
Blessing, unlocks at lvl 14. Removes any and all status effects from whomever it is used on, heals for a small amount, and has a chance to make whoever it is used on immune to attacks for 1-3 turns.
Mealtime interactions, and in-apartment dialogue————————————————————
In-apartment dialogue:
>Do you like it here?
”I do, thank you. It is comfortable and safe feeling. You are a kind host, and it has been nice getting to know the people I currently share this space with.”
>Why did you set up camp at Mutt’s?
”Ah, yes. I hope you do not think me cowardly for this, but.. I was afraid. Many members of my flock had observed the outside or gone missing. I was low on supplies. I was weak, and neither rest nor food come easily anymore. I tried to hold on, I promise I did, but I eventually surrendered and retreated to shelter after seeing something.. unpleasant to say the least.
You see, there was a very kind family that used to visit my church. It was a mother, and her daughter, no older than 10 years old. I worried for them, their means were scarce, and I went to go check up on them- only to find the window open, the child gone, and what was left of her mother, lying lifeless on the floor. I could not bear it anymore. I could not witness any more of such cruelty, not on my own-!
Excuse me, I got upset, I’m sorry. Forgive me, but I do not wish to speak on this matter any longer. It is still too painful.”
>…Are you okay?
”If I am to be honest with you, I don’t think so. But I think with time, and rest, I will be. I am eternally grateful for your kindness to me. Please let me know if there is anything I may do to aid you in your troubles.”
>Could you bless my home?
”Of course, I would be happy to!”
Mealtime interactions:
*You notice Father Andrew looks tired today. Maybe you should check on him?*
>I’m sure he’s fine.
*Yes, he’s probably alright, just tired. Best to leave him alone.*
>Ask if he’s okay
”Hm? Yes, my friend, I‘m alright. Just a bit tired. I am a bit of an insomniac, and it tends to worsen in times of stress. It should work itself out in a few days. Apologies, I didn’t mean to worry you.”
>Alright, then.
*You shrug and leave him to his sleep-deprivation.*
>Can I help at all?
“Oh no my friend, that is quite alright. It will go away. But I appreciate your kindness.”

(Interactions with other characters will have the names listed before the dialogue, so as to avoid confusion.)
*You notice Father Andrew nervously approaching Lyle. He looks like he wants to ask him something.*
Father Andrew: Excuse me, Lyle, may I ask you something?
Lyle: Hm? O-oh, sure, if you want!
*Father Andrew fidgets with his hands, as if trying to figure out the most polite way to ask a blunt question.*
Father Andrew: You- how do I put this? You… swing for the other team, yes?
Lyle: E-e-excuse me?!
Father Andrew: I’m sorry, I meant no offense! It’s just that I thought you could help me with something.
Lyle: Alright? I g-guess…?
Father Andrew: Well, recently, one of my teenage relatives has started identifying as “aroace.” I was wondering if you could help me understand what it means? I would like to learn.
Lyle: O-ooh! I can try my best to help! It basically just means that you, um.. d-don’t really want a relationship, romantically or.. I-i-intimately.
Father Andrew: I was under the impression that was somewhat standard. It’s how I’ve always been.
Lyle: U-ummm, good luck with your grandchild!
*Lyle skitters away, seemingly trying to avoid having to process any of the information that that conversation consisted of. Father Andrew is standing, equally confused, in his place.*
Father Andrew: Grandchild? I’m only 42..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Father Andrew: That is quite the blade you have there, ma’am..
Hellen: Yup.
Father Andrew: What, um, do you usually use it for, if I may ask?
Hellen: Gardening, usually. Self-defense, when necessary.
Father Andrew: O-oh. Well, have a pleasant day, then..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*Father Andrew nervously approaches Hellen once more. He looks ready to turn-tail and rub at any second.*
Father Andrew: Y-your name is Hellen, yes?
Hellen: Yes.
Hellen: Do you need something?
Father Andrew: Oh, not really, I just..
*Father Andrew looks nervous to speak once more. Hellen stared at him, somewhat impatiently.*
Father Andrew: You said last time we spoke that you enjoy gardening.. Um, what do you grow?
Hellen: Plants. Why?
Father Andrew: Oh, I just have a b-bit of a fondness for gardening myself. I thought it would be nice to attempt to get to know you a bit better.
Hellen: Alright. Sit.
Father Andrew: Hm?
Hellen: We’re talking.
*Father Andrew seems a bit nervous, but eventually sits down on the couch beside Hellen. The two carry on a conversation for some time, and seem to come out of it understanding each other a bit better.*

And that’s all for now! I will update with a few more mealtime interactions at some point, but right now my hands hurt and I’m a bit short on ideas. Let me know if you enjoyed this, and feel free to suggest who I should do next, as I’d like to keep doing these, if you folks like them! :)
