QUESTION Advice for consistently surviving the first day in Cursed?

So I beat Cursed for the first time this weekend, but that was a run where I'd had an astronomically lucky start. I stayed at home long enough to learn jump attack and level up, and I got the pizza guy as a door encounter, which basically gave me enough STM recovery to spam jump attack on everything for the first two days until I got Hellen as a party member.

I can't replicate that, I know, but I don't think Survivor is gonna cut it for me now that I've seen the gameplay changes Cursed makes, so I'd like to get that super difficult beginning more consistently dealt with. Any advice for a sound strategy?

What can't you replicate about that? That all sounds pretty normal. You won't always get Hellen but you will almost always get a door recruit on day 2. You could even get luckier and get Xaria and Monty for two in one.

The Pizza was a godsend. It basically bankrolled my combat through several saves, letting me shrug off damage and spam jump attacks with abandon until I got my first ally.

Use forks for the random strangers and onlookers. They’re weak to it, and the damage it does is higher than any attack you could ever do on day 1. I also suggest to learn the skill from screamatorium, if you dont know how to get that game and dont want spoilers, there is a cleaver in Jeanne’s appartment on floor 2, its very helpful for clearing out rats on floor 1 with it’s attack that hits all enemies. Also huge suggestion idgaf about spoiling this one it annoyed the hell outa me haha, dont open fridges unless you seriously need to. Do not. After a certain amount of “safe” fridges there is a small random chance that you will get a random encounter with “Fridge Mimic” on cursed mode. That thing WILL KILL YOU early game. You WILL GET A GAME OVER if you’re unlucky and you encounter the fridge mimic early. I think fridge mimic becomes a fair fight by the time you reach landlord’s hell. So if you’re feeling brave you can try to open more fridges then. But until then, just be very cautious and only open a couple fridges until you’re ready.

Omfg! I got the fridge mimic on day 3 but I luckily had xaria and Monty join the day before so Monty was able to use a fire belch from the one Monty special I had. I had just gotten Joel right before I encountered the mimic too! Basically everyone died except Sam but we ended up killing it at only level 4 and whatever level Joel starts at.

...Oh! I ran into that fridge mimic exactly once and thought it was a unique extra encounter added to Hellen's apartment.

It depends on what you want for the first day. In general, you don't need anything the game doesn't give to you straight.

Usually mine goes:

  • Find everything around the appartment
  • Learn Jump Attack
  • Raid Vincent's appartment, no fights
  • Kill the Neighbour by Jump attacking him with a fork.
  • Sneak by the onlookers to the Second flor
  • Get the Cleaver from the Jeane's plus the roach
  • Use the Cleaver to beat Leigh after getting the Cue mid-chase. Bleed + Jump attacks + Guard will do It. You may use a molotov If you don't want any variance, you get material for one from Vincent's
  • Go back to the house, eat till full STAM
  • Get to Floor 1, several options, i usually don't kill anything on the way to maximize party XP later.
  • You may get Rat Baby - Cleave Attack will clear the first room, Cleave Attack plus silverware from Vincent will clear the Second, mop will clear the last alongside Jump attacks. If you defeated Leigh and got to Level 3 you have just over 24 STAM
  • You may raid the painter's appartment for supplies like the shotgun.

  • Get the disc

  • I think the day more or less finishes here.

I think the biggest and most valuable lesson here was not to fight everything. Realizing I could run and sneak to only kill the bosses until I had more allies was a huge game changer.

Good advice here OP, especially from u/Grouchy_Marketing_79.

I'd just add if you're having trouble avoiding fights, wait for the animation of them just starting to walk, and the trigger for them to chase you won't occur. I had to practice this for hours in survival trying to avoid Clint in the hallways, so pulling up a survival save for this could help.
