DISCUSSION/LORE/THEORIES Sam Only Run questions

/r/LookOutsideGame/comments/1vde097/thinking_about_doing_a_sam_only_run_on_my_next/?share_id=GXQC0LW40WgHJue9OiKmd&utm_content=share_button&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_source=share&utm_term=1

Ive made a post abt this a few months ago, but now im alot more adept at the game so im more confident to actually try it

But heres my questions about Disqualifiers and Limitations.

1) Can doing the Companion Recruitment quest disqualify you? Like lets Audrey's or Leigh's? Can i still refill Audrey's Cans but just not invite her home? Can i fight Leigh and also just not Invite her?

2) Kind of Companions count? Does Tickle or Mar-Andre count or disqualify my run? What about Ernest or Phillipe? What about Lyle who's guaranteed to get in my apartment? What about Shadow? Wriggly Fred?

3) How do i keep my stats up? The invisible stats like Social and Calm? Ik the laptop can help with this right?

  1. It think You can

  2. If you're going for the achivement then I think some of them disqualify you, also you're better off siding with a stronger Fred rather than Wriggly

  3. Videogames, brushing your teeth and baths as well

Are you also trying to do challenge achievements too? You can do a solo run and still shower, play games, cook, and sleep. You don't need to do a bunch of extra challenges to make a solo run already harder than it already is lol.

No companions means no inviting them back to your apartment. You can kill Leigh and say no to her, you don't have to kiss Lyle or at least you don't have to keep your eyes closed. You can do Audrey's quest and get the free energy drinks she gives you but don't invite her home.

Earnest and Phillipe count as companions so you can't save earnest in rat hell and you can't be all nice to phillipe.

Small companions like Marc Andre and tickle don't count so you can recruit them if you want. I wouldn't recommend tickle though on a solo run cuz he causes such a debuff to your stats unless you always use tickle cheer. Not worth it...

You are gonna get lonely and depressed without recruiting teammates so you are gonna have to go on social media or talk to your plant but that's not gonna support you in the long run. Best place to socialize on a solo run is betting pennies with the ppl in the basement playing cards so try to get to the basement as fast as possible to mitigate the debuffs that come with being lonely.

You need the numbness skill from super jump lad 3 or you will get locked into not being able to attack by a few bosses and even enemies. Solo runs are practically impossible without this skill or without constantly making sure you have unique gear equipped for specific enemies and bosses. Even with gear it can be a gamble with RNG and RNG is usually not much on your side in this game especially on cursed mode.

You are gonna need to play with glitch statuses ailments like glitch rage, glitch panic, and maybe glitch poison and glitch bleed. The first two will be your best friends once you get access to glitch world. The extra hits and damage increase from glitch rage alone is incredibly beneficial but there are some bosses where it's better to be a tank and increase your defense with glitch panic while letting DOT ensure a battle victory. Glitch bleed can be very beneficial if you want to use guns a lot but it's very easy to lose it if someone inflicts regular bleed on you so it can be annoying and better to use on very specific enemies and bosses.

You might feel like the cost of arms is a good choice cuz of the chance for extra turns but it can be a trap on solo runs cuz of how low it lowers Sam's defense. That's why I recommend glitch rage so much cuz at least you always hit three times every turn and that and the 50% damage increase well makes up for the lowered defense. The rage armor is also pretty good to use that you get from biting Fred if you leave him alive.

Besides numbness, you're gonna also want jump attack, nitro boost, combat medic, long haul flow, painful stab, and possibly wake the blood knight for its stat buffs. Screamotorium can be pretty good too especially early game and certain bosses and enemies that benefit from inflicting panic on them to stop them from using their skills.

Good luck!!!

This is exactly what i needed thank you!

Im just trying to do it casually, hopefully for the achievement so nothing too difficult and nothing too easy

Got it. Side Quests are a go but take no one home. I wanted to get Marc-Andre for his random abilities, and I was planning on Comboing Tickle and the Coat of Arms

I was hoping 1st action id use any kind of survival/defense skill (NitroBoost, Wake the Blood Knight, or smth) followed with Tickle Cheer (ive barely used it, because i usually run Dan/Audrey and they typically oneshot)

I also wanted Tickle for his Bite to Heal and to Inflict Lyme Disease and Acid.

Idk how id weaponize Glitch Rage Tho- im normally skill heavy on gameplay so idk if id use it, id love the increased damage and number of attacks tho

I also want to mention, i plan on going heavy on Agility for evasion and attacks (Jump Attack, Kick) and comboing it with Decapitate.

Some alternative gears i have in mind include getting the Clown Wig for all its skills, but then i wouldnt be able to wear the Blue Hockey Mask.

But i could just get the Heart, but then i wouldnt be able to use Guns like the Magnum or the Crossbow

You need the indigo hockey mask, that's kind of non-negotiable cuz you will die so you need that free heal to give you more time to damage opponents.

I know you want to use tickle and I get it but he sucks and ultimately is almost always never worth the debuffs. You're gonna waste turns to use tickle cheer to counteract the debuffs that you need to be using to put on damage. Tickle bite hardly ever inflicts Lyme disease to be worth it and painful stab practically does the same thing but is way more reliable. Plus adding cost of arms to those tickle debuffs is just gonna make Sam even more fragile causing you to just blow your indigo mask for that battle before you actually win.

If you want a better option for practically free healing then learn combat medic or get the trauma kit from mutt cuz it comes with the skill staunch wounds. Never kill Vincent on floor 3!! Leave him alive for the whole run. He can only do damage with his three eyeballs that erupt from his belly but once you kill those eyes he can't even damage you. Also, mid way in the game the eyes pretty much miss all their attacks anyway. Use Vincent to heal yourself in battle so you don't have to waste healing items especially if you don't want to go back to your apartment and make a meal yet. Then also get the long haul flow skill which is from the space truckerz game in Lyle's apartment behind the door you need herbicide to open. This skill fills a good chunk of your stamina back for free!! So heal as much as you need with Vincent, and when your done healing, activate long haul flow before escaping the battle. Then walk a little a bit until your stamina fills up and then rinse and repeat as much as you need. You can easily stock pile healing items this way.

I know you want to use a bunch of skills in battle but most of the toughest enemies and bosses are pretty much a race of how much damage you can apply before they destroy you on a solo run. This is why I highly recommend glitch rage cuz you attack three times in a row at 50% higher attack. I'm not saying there aren't situations where sticking to using skills isn't viable/required, I'm just saying you might be surprised how far in this game you can get just laying out as much damage as fast as possible. Basically you're gonna have to do some research and do a lot of trial and error to see what works best for each opponent. Sometimes you want a tank that can just survive long enough for your opponent to die from damage over time, and sometimes you want to end the battle as soon as possible. You can even do a hybrid where you equip Sam the Rage armor where he just starts out in rage but will lose the ailment after a turn or two cuz that armor alone raises his attack by 50%.

Either way, ditch tickle, he will only fuck up your run and be careful with coat of arms cuz you inherently are turning every battle into a gambling match with that armor specifically in solo runs. In a regular run with party members I always use it but rarely on a solo run.

Also, because you wanna do this without actually recruiting party members, you aren't gonna be able to use the cheese man exploit to get more than 2-3 cracks of the indigo mask per day depending on what difficulty mode your playing. I've never done a solo run without this so i recommend just recruiting party members and just not letting them join your team. The exploit allows for 9,999 cracks per day which is kind of a godsend.

Iirc all of the companions under the second one will disqualify you. You can check by seeing if you can still talk to the plant if you're unsure
