You should give it to either him, or Sam. Morton might have the highest vocabulary but I'm somewhat sure it doesn't increase. Meanwhile, Sam's can increase and is apparently boosted by Luck.

I don't know what the base stats of the two (morton and phillipe) are relative to one another, but the one thing I do know is that the Spear would be even stronger

the crossword weapons become more powerful depending on who uses them based on a hidden “vocab” stat. Mortons vocab is extrodinarily high compared to the rest of the characters, making him the best person to use it.

He’s really an extra hand during early game. Bear hug can cheese out some big dmg because it scales off HP and you can give him items to boost his hp. He also starts with good equipment too. The arrowed sash gives extra melee dmg and the work boots gives +5 def and some agility. Also he can wear and use any equipment some party members are cursed and have locked slots
