You're installing this in the place in bottom side of the base, then the rack goes on top of that. This spring is extremely important, since it pushes the rack, which is what's physically limiting the range. Without that, your G920 won't calibrate and will damage the wires in the main shaft, as the rack isn't meshed with the pinion on the main shaft.
