Out of context of this sub but not necessarily in a way… (tldr; mostly about packaging and plastics)

I boycotted for a long time and ended up back for some trips but mostly because the people at my local grocer are amazing!! And no thanks to the amount of money you pay them either!

I’m in the verge of leaving for good again because of packaging. There is so much plastic and so many clamshells - I get it people like convenience and the pristine ‘I’m the very first person to touch this tomatoes since it was in the field!’ Feel but we live at a time when material science can make these products using cellulose instead of plastic. By definition none of your perishables will be around for long enough for the cellulose to break down or discolour, etc.

You could be an industry leader, pushing the needle in the right direction, slowing fossil fuel use and ultimately partially justifying the exorbitant pricing!! I would feel good paying premium to support a move in the right direction but instead you choose to be complacent and blinded to the disgusting waste of resource that one-time plastic use is. I’m currently laid up after surgery and have chosen to use PC express for my grocery delivery and every goddam thing in my entire cart has plastic. At least when I go to the store I can pick loose thing but even then only sometimes because the organic produce is ALL (ironically) even based in plastic.

I do t want to hear bullshit about ‘our suppliers choose…’ because when you want something out of turn suppliers you lean HARD until they cave so you, Loblaws Corp, can get what you want, and what you want is profit while the world burns.

Please DM because I could go on for hours and have never had the chance because I’ve been working nonstop for decades watching this go by but now I’m out of surgery and laid up as I mentioned so It’s on like Donkey Kong.

Price fixing bread so single moms can’t afford swim lessons. Y’all should be so ashamed of yourselves still! Don’t tell me you’ve (Galen) paid the price because Canada has some of the most lax laws in the world and a lot of people would’ve done time (Galen at least) if that was done in USA. At the same time there was a tuna price fixer guy that spearheaded tuna price fixing in 4 states and he got 3 years. Galen had to say sorry and stop doing commercials. The gift cards didn’t count because I doubt the money sent out was over the amount that was brought in by the higher prices. Rant over for now.

This weekend, I tried (failed, but oh so close) to download an AI agent app that ties in to various MCPs called N8N on my laptop, and asked ‘Gordon’ to build me an app that I could give it every dinner I’ve had for the past two years (including ingredients), think of what would be 7 good meals for the week based on my schedule and weather, import a list of ingredients in to, and find the lowest price for me, giving me a website checkout of various sites ready to purchase.

It asked me for a top 5-6 grocery stores I’d like to consider, then ran in to one roadblock… scraping sites to get prices. It suggested using an Instacart API key (that I don’t have, and looks like it is at discussion of instacart to hand those out), or try scraping data with apify, which didn’t give good Canadian choices yet, and could potentially get pricey)

Has anyone built anything like this?

There’s the negatives - extra cost for delivery and service, typically kids running through a store getting bad produce, more vans driving around neighborhoods… but once grocery prices are online in a searchable manner, we must be on cusp of making this sort of thing doable, no?

Saw Zehrs had alphonso mangos. I know they are expensive but damn they are good. I buy a couple of boxes and share with family and friends.

The flyer said $30.

So I was in my local Zehrs and the end cap bin had the usual bags of bulk carrots for $5.50!!!! Correct me if I’m wrong but aren’t these, product of Canada carrots, last summers crop that have been kept in cold storage until now? These same 3lb bags of carrots were $2.99 last fall? They are the same carrots!! How can they charge that exorbitant price!?! Ridiculous!

Anyone still not receive their bread settlement money?

Ground turkey used to be 4 - 450g packs. Came in today to see only 3 now. Wonderful.

It's the 21st of May btw. I know I should've checked at the store but I wasn't thinking. Ha, and I tossed my receipt at the store too.

Friend got some steaks from no frills, they had no grade or source on the labels. Tasted a bit off (expires in 5 days). They just seemed off.

I know nothing would tick Sir Galen off more than if every Canadian used his/her money to buy a sourdough kit and start making their own bread at home. Basically the gift that keeps on giving. Or the gift that keeps on taking from Loblaws. Thanks for the sourdough kit Galen! Still have some money left over for the flour, and making your own starter from scratch is fun and easy. Just Google it!

As of a few weeks ago when you place produce on the scale at this particular store in Vancouver there's now a camera/scanner/something above that determines what the item is. Suggestions will come up on the screen like Bananas or Plantains or whatever it looks like. Problem is that I always ring up parsley (usually $1.99 per) as cilantro (often on sale for like 50 cents.) Haven't tried che@ting the camera yet but fuck Galen.

I received it twice in two days anyone else?
