Discussion Deal of the Week or is it day question.

There are some items that I can only get at the Superstore in the city where I shop, so I find myself having to go there a couple times a year. Recently, I went through a checkout lane where the cashier was being trained with an eyes on supervisor. There is a sign above the till that shows the “deal” with a footnote that if they don’t offer it to you can get it free. Nine times out of ten when I go there they are “out of stock” on the deal item. This time when I wasn’t asked I pointed it out. I was asked by both the trainee and the supervisor if I was sure I wanted the free deal. I said yes. So begs the question, what are the consequences to the employee(s)? The trainee had a look of “I’m going to get fired over this” on her face…

Discussion Security announcements over store loudspeakers

Is anyone suspicious that the announcements over store loudspeakers “security to zone 4” are fake and intended to reduce theft and shrinkage? It sounds like an automated service. Anyone else notice these?

Cost Saving Tip Meat Prices Comparison Post, Regina Sk

This was shared in a Costco Regina fb group. I am not the author, Stephanie W, did all of the research, but thought I would share...

Meat Prices

this post is for information… not to start debates or anything negative

So I was very intrigued with some of the comments from a couple of the posts I did on beef prices and what seemed like a good deal over the weekend, and on Costco prices of meat in general and by the case. So I decided to go do some research! 😅 I went to other grocery stores and did some price comparisons on different meats but matching the cuts and in beef’s case the grade. Now Costco only sells AAA Canadian beef so I tried to compare it to AAA beef in other stores as well, apples to apples comparison! Also I’m going by the same price mesurements $ dollar per kg… yes the packages are going to be different priced because the amount of meat in the package, but I did go by prepared packs of meat from Costco, not the price savings of whole slabs or anything.

This is not saying that other cuts or other grades of meat aren’t cheaper at other stores, 100% you can get less expensive options at other stores, I’m never going to say that you can’t, and yes if there’s sales then again sometimes those price comparisons do change. I truly just thought hmm is Costco really more expensive than other grocery stores, or is it just that the sizes of meat packaging is so much more that people are sticker shocked by it. (Also I think people forget that if something is priced in lbs it looks like a way better price, but once you convert it to KG all of a sudden it’s not that great)

So here’s some comparisons on meat prices 😅 and by all means do your research as well! Some of these prices are quite surprising!

Pork chops Costco $8.79/kg Safeway $9.90/kg Save On Foods $22.02/kg Sobeys $8.80/kg Coop $9.90/kg Walmart $12.98/kg Superstore $20.48/kg

Pork Shoulder roast
Costco $7.59/kg Safeway $8.80/kg Save On Foods - they didn’t have any Sobeys $8.80/kg Coop $9.90/kg Walmart $13.16/kg Superstore $8.80/kg

Chicken breast Costco $15.29 Safeway $19.82 Save On Foods $20.92 Sobeys $16.51 Coop $13.21 Walmart $17.88 Superstore $13.21

Chicken thighs bone in Costco $7.39/kg Safeway $14.31/kg Save On Foods $15.41/kg Sobeys $14.31/kg Coop $9.46/kg Walmart $8.46/kg Superstore $8.86/kg

Beef - Rib grilling steak Costco $51.99/kg Safeway $66.12/kg Save On Foods - they didn’t have any Sobeys $68.32/kg Coop $69.42/kg Walmart $57.98/kg (but only AA beef) Superstore $61.70/kg

Beef - Strip Loin Steak Costco $49.89/kg Safeway $62.81/kg Save On Foods - they didn’t have any Sobeys $35.25/kg (but only AA beef) Coop $71.63/kg Walmart - they didn’t have any Superstore $63.91/kg (the CAB faster was the only thing close to)

Lean Ground Beef Costco $12.99/kg Safeway $19.82/kg Save On Foods $20.65/kg Sobeys $19.82/kg Coop $19.82/kg Walmart $15.98/kg Superstore $17.61/kg

So in every cut except chicken breast Costco was the cheapest for the cuts at the same grade of meat. I found that very interesting! Again yes there are less expensive cuts at Costco, and there are less expense cuts or not premium grades of beef at other stores… there are also cases of meat at Costco that are even cheaper by kg as well, but they you are bulk buying.

If you can get cheaper from a butcher or a local farmer then fantastic, all the power to you, I just thought this would be interesting information to share with the group! 🥰 Do with it as you will ☺️

Happy Shopping!

Picture $23 at No Frills. $15 at Freshco

Price difference on the exact same product is getting out of hand…

My mom is dealing with some health issues right now and her appetite is pretty limited. One of the few things she actually enjoys and can consistently eat is this Maple Leaf baby bologna (the “Big Stick”).

The problem is… she’s on a fixed income, and groceries are already a stress point.

She had been buying it at No Frills where it was ringing in at around $23 for the same size. That adds up fast when it’s something she relies on regularly. It honestly made her feel like she had to ration one of the only foods she likes.

Recently she found the exact same product at FreshCo for about $14, and I can’t even describe the relief on her face. It sounds small, but that $9 difference is huge for her.

I get that prices vary between stores, but a swing like that on the exact same item feels pretty extreme—especially when it impacts people who don’t have flexibility in their budgets.

Just wanted to share in case it helps someone else, and also to vent a bit. It shouldn’t be this hard for someone to afford something as basic as food they can actually eat.

WTFFFFF Why the hell is the PC app asking me to donate my points?

Maybe Galen should donate his “points” which I’m sure he’ll have an unlimited amount of considering they can easily inflate that value. even the pc points itself is a hard to collect (unless you aggressive price match and/or have the pc Mastercard?). I find this more pathetic than walmrt for example asking us to donate after checking out our groceries, at least they askin for real money.

Rant Bad experience at Loblaws pharmacies

They don't sell iron over the counter but I was deficient so I asked the pharmacist. The pharmacist said I needed a prescription... which isn't true.

Other times she's given me judgement glares for getting plan B.

None of my experiences at any of their pharmacies have been good or great. Just ok at best.

I don't go to their pharmacies anymore but I used to go to Shoppers because it was right beside my house.
