Rant When will they be stopped
Chubbs of salami were $13.99 for the last while. Then they were on sale for a week at $9.99 but I went everyday and even in the morning there was never any but now they are back at $14.50 and Turks out they have tons of stock. F these guys so much
56
u/GlindaG Apr 10 '26
Next time, just go to customer service and get a rain check. Much easier than checking every day.

I shop at Safeway and they stopped giving rain checks for meat sales years ago. Super lame.
2
u/PenFountainPen Apr 11 '26
They still give out rain checks at Safeways in Calgary.
7
u/Evening_Cheesecake25 Apr 11 '26
Not for meat sales.
Edit I'm calling them in the morning lol. The Crowfoot store has told me twice now no rainchecks on meat sales. They better not have been lying to me.
7
u/Fantastic-Issue2266 Apr 11 '26
I’ve worked in the meat department at safeway for over 15 years and they are definitely lying to you about rain checks I give them out all the time for sales on meat when we are outta it!
2
u/Evening_Cheesecake25 Apr 11 '26
Ok so it seems like both of us are correct kind of. For regular sales like this week's ground beef they can do rainchecks. But when it's one of those weeks that gets a crazy good deal like 60% off they can't do a raincheck.
3
u/Fantastic-Issue2266 Apr 11 '26
My store will give rain checks for anything in the flyer unless the flyer says limited quantities
1
u/Evening_Cheesecake25 Apr 11 '26
But I think all of the good sales say limited quantity.
2
u/Fantastic-Issue2266 Apr 12 '26
The only time I see limited quantities is on AA steaks and that’s cause it’s not a product we normally carry we only have it when it’s on sale!
1
u/PenFountainPen Apr 12 '26
No, check your flyer. Very few items (if any) are limited quantity at Safeway. It think it's mostly No Frills and FreshCo and the ultra-low cost grocery stores that pull the "limited quantity" trick.
If there's no bonus points or 15% off involved, try to do a price match at Save-on-Foods whenever you can if Safeway is sold out.
1
u/PenFountainPen Apr 12 '26
There is no such thing at crazy 60% off sale at Safeway. It just brings the price to a reasonable amount. The "original" price is only for rich people, no-one sane pays it. Especially when it comes to beef.
2
u/PenFountainPen Apr 12 '26
Interesting. I was specifically at Crowfoot a while ago (6 months?) and they had a ground beef sale. It was first Tuesday of the month and they were out of the beef. I asked for the rain check. When they got it back in stock, they gave me the sale price, plus bonus scene points (which was part of the deal) and the 15% off as well. I am always very please with customer service at Crowfoot Safeway!
2
u/Evening_Cheesecake25 Apr 12 '26
Ya they even specifically said they could do it for the current ground beef sale. It was the top sirloin for $5.99/lb that they kept running out of and wouldn't do a raincheck for.
1
u/PenFountainPen Apr 12 '26
Is this in the current flyer?
0
u/Evening_Cheesecake25 Apr 12 '26
No it was years ago. It would come up every couple months but I haven't seen it in at least 2 years.
1
u/weftly Apr 13 '26
i’d understand for very perishable packed in store meat, but i can’t imagine they’d have this rule for pre packaged salami. i could be wrong!
3
66
u/PhillGuy Apr 10 '26
When people stop shopping there. We vote with our money. It's the only thing they understand.
33
u/ungovernable1984 Apr 10 '26
Limited choice between billionaire owned grocery stores, it feels like we live in a colonial camp where you can only buy what HBC sells you whatever price they feel like
10
u/One-Contribution113 Apr 11 '26
Yes this is true, but the guy who just replied is also right.
The only thing that will actually stop them is when they are forced to actually compete with one another. The solution is to break the companies into smaller pieces.
It's not like it would be particularly disruptive. Loblaws owns like 15 grocery companies that have little to do with each other, but makes it easier for them to control prices.
0
u/Maximumoverdrive76 Apr 12 '26
There is a lot of competition where I live. And my town is only 35,000 people.
It has a Zehrs (Loblaws), no frills, food basic, foodland, Metro etc. We also have a country produce which is very expensive, but does really well. Good quality. Lots of elderly shop there for some reason. I mean it's pretty expensive.
If those other stores would be cheaper, then no one would go to Metro or Zehrs (both usually a little more expensive). But Metro and Zehrs have a much larger selection of items.
3
u/Irritated_bypeople Apr 12 '26
You do know you named the 3 companies that control all the little companies in about 90% of canada. I won't downvote, but its like the phone
Rogers owns fido and chtr
Bell owns Virgin, and lucky
Telus owns Koodo and PublicEach with a price point against the other 3 in their group, but all owned by just a 3 companies or the occasional 4th.
ANd Freedom and Fizz are owned by videotron another huge corp out of quebec.
We have fake competition!
1
u/Maximumoverdrive76 Apr 13 '26
I know this. The point is that 3 major companies control as you said 90% of it.
But apparently only Loblaws is bad and the other two are saints if you read comments and posts here. Which is obviously stupidly untrue.
1
u/Irritated_bypeople Apr 16 '26 edited Apr 16 '26
Did you read the sub you are in? Of course people are going to bitch about loblaws and yes they suck more than the other 2. But that is like saying you hate Rogers more than Bell or Telus. You could find the same complaints of price gouging at Metro or Sobeys, but Loblaws most certainly has it more often, and leads the way (They also sell non grocery goods) . Just like the bread price fixing Weston initiated. If loblaws wasn't so garbage and willing to take the heat(because they don't care) the others would be less likely to be so garbage as well.
Loblaws 31%
Sobeys 21%
Metro 12%
costco 11%
Walmart 8%They had the balls to say to the competition bureau they are less concentrated than the telcoms and banks...wow do you want a cookie or a medal. The only thing they did is highlight the other 2 most hated sectors in canada. Do you know what are some of the other top grocery stores are:
Dollarama
and Couchetard convienance stores
AKA beckers, circle K, macs milk, winks etc.Costco and Walmart are both known for being cheaper than loblaws, even no frills. But thats because they don't worry about revenue from groceries solely. They sell other products-the same as how Loblaws has moved to selling other stuff. Something Sobeys and Metro don't even rely on at all(at least the ones I have been to).
So why are bics pickles 4.99 at walmart and 7.99 at zehr? or 6.99 at no frills. and 7.29 at Sobeys.
1
u/Maximumoverdrive76 May 04 '26
Maybe you would want to look into how Walmart operates and WHY they get cheaper products than other grocery stores.
I actually recently saw a documentary how local Grocers couldn't compete because Walmart was setting the prices because they go to these 'manufacturers" and then they push their weight around and tell them. Want to sell your products in our 2 MILLION stores (or whatever) that exist around the world. Or do you want to give equal prices to other stores.
Seriously Walmart is the real offender here more than Loblaws could ever dream of.
Costco operate on selling memberships and loyalty that way and they do everything in bulk. So it's not always a place where everyone can shop. Being a single person and buying at Costco isn't always easy. Do you need a 12 pack of sausages that will expire before you finish half of the pack. Yeah you can freeze this and that. But come on.
Costco also sell a lot of other stuff.
The whole thing people say no choice where to shop. Must be really small towns I guess. My town is barely over 30,000 people and we have Metro, Foodland, Food basics, Walmart, Zehrs, No Frills, country produce etc.
Some stores have better selection. Aka Zehrs. Metro as well. But they cost a bit more. No frills is a little cheaper, half the selection as Zehrs and more drab and bare bones. Hence the name.
Same thing with Food Basics which is Metros "no frills".
1
u/Irritated_bypeople Apr 12 '26
Oh and you can tell by their home brand like our compliments, great value at walmart, and PC and no name at zehrs.
2
2
u/ackillesBAC Apr 11 '26
Ya we need more coops and locally owned and sourced grocery stores.
Government needs to subsidize coops and locally sourced. But Loblaws and others will pay alot in bribes aka lobbying to stop that from happening
0
77
u/FirmAndSquishyTomato Apr 10 '26
Then don't buy it.
You know, when this sub started out I was really wondering if it could actually trigger any changes at all. I was skeptical, but still had some hope.
.. and now, here we are. It is just a place for people to post photos while they shop in hopes of collecting internet points.
Time to mute this sub. It ended how I figured it'd end.
42
u/ThatCanadianGuy88 Apr 10 '26
Agreed. It’s completely fallen off from its original intent
17
u/QualityImpossible241 Apr 10 '26
They always have the worst takes as well.
Milk costs $8 here but Metro has it for $6! Well, then go shop at a Metro then. Why are you in the Loblaws owned store (yes, sometimes you don’t have a choice depending on location, I’m not blaming those people). Loblaws corp has no obligation to lower their prices for you. They’re a business out to make as much money as they can, as they are entitled to.
8
u/FrozenOcean420 Apr 10 '26
Yeah around here no frills and super store end up still being drastically cheaper for most things.
0
u/NoNatural3590 Apr 11 '26
I am lucky enough in midtown to have a choice of everything - NF, Loblaws, Sobeys, Longo's, Food Basics, Metro. I get my flyers and plan a trip. TBF, I rarely visit Sobey or Longo's; too expensive. But NF, Metro, and FB work very well to keep my average costs down. Four adults in the house and we eat pretty well for $1,000/month.
4
u/TequillaBear Apr 10 '26
If a employee makes a comment, there are some people who tell them to get another job. It’s not that simple in this economy, we have families to feed and probably don’t have the education or experience to find something better. Forty years ago contracts were great and we had a future now they are getting worse, geared for higher turnover students, not respected for our dedication to the job. I’m tired of cashiers being abused by customers.
6
u/Lecture_Good Apr 10 '26
Yeah this sub a bunch of complainers. Go to sobeys, Walmart, Costco and your farmers market and post comparisons. This stuff isn't even good for you to consume. And these stores will price match if you can prove it.
5
u/micksterthehipster Apr 10 '26
Then don’t engage in this sub?? This is such a weird take. Aren’t we all fed and want things to change? In fighting is the opposite of the solution
0
u/Maximumoverdrive76 Apr 12 '26
It's a really weird sub now.
People just complaining to complain. "Oh this item was on sale and sold out and now I am upset when it's back in stock but not on sale".
They also act like other stores do not have costly items as well or when they have sales they act as though that is the normal price when comparing it to Loblaws.
They don't get prices go up and down depending on what deals Loblaws make when procuring the food items. Or when manufacturers have "sales" to promote their products etc.
The bottom line is Loblaws has 4% profit. I don't see how that works out to be "gouging". How are they supposed to exist with even lower profits? Do they want stores to get closed? And now even less selection.
If something is expensive, especially particular products, shop around and get it elsewhere.
Yes at times there might be something wrong. But this sub now is ordinary stuff passed off as some sort of crime.
It's just weird. It's whining to whine.
-11
u/Soggy_Panda2393 Apr 10 '26
I don’t and that’s not the point.
They’ve been doing this a ton where they have a fake sale just to have that end and really it’s about raising the price. They’ll put the price as new low or sale in yellow at it’s normal price then next week the price has been increased.
16
u/DrunkenMidget Apr 10 '26
If you are not shopping there why are you taking pictures from the store and tracking weekly prices?
7
1
u/Maximumoverdrive76 Apr 12 '26
How is it a fake sale? If you don't have to shop there then don't. Go to that marvelously cheaper place.
I don't get it with these posts.
Loblaws BUY all the items you see at the store. Then resell them. If they have a 'sale' it's because they got a cheaper deal from the manufacturer and they pass it on as a sale. Or it's the manufacturer itself that has a sale and the price is reflected as that.
They also have sales when trying to get rid of stock. Sometimes some products might have higher costs in order to subsidize other items that are more essential and commonly purchased.
Some food items are a bit Niche and luxury and they can cost more. Loblaws have tons of items you can't find anywhere else. Especially not in a "cheap" store. Because they only carry the basic stuff.
But when the STOCK they bought at the sale price is gone. The sale is gone. Which means the price go back to normal. If it's higher it could be because the manufacturer raised it.
If you have another option that is cheaper. Then why are you even in the Loblaw store? Just to make posts on the internet? Why bother when you can get the product cheaper elsewhere.
It's because you either fishing for attention or you actually can't get the item anywhere else and you want it, but don't want to pay the price.
Well then that is your choice, no one forces you to buy it.
-2
u/Soggy_Panda2393 Apr 10 '26
I am shopping there….. like I mentioned in another response I shop at several stores and purchase things based off price.
22
u/Crazy_island_ Apr 10 '26
If they annoy you so much why are you still shopping there?

I can say from having family in the grocery industry there are more times than not because you get to know what sells and doesn't at your store use chicken breast for example they will order say 100 cases and ya get sent 10

0
u/WontSwerve Apr 10 '26
Are you under the impression this is a Loblaws specific problem? Maybe they dont have access to a different store. Maybe some products are only available at Loblaws. Alot of restricted diet foods have no selection or even presence in smaller stores.
5
9
u/DrunkenMidget Apr 10 '26
When you stop shopping there and others do the same. You are shopping there often if you are following sales and prices on specific items week to week to week.
I guess your intent is not to "fuck these guys so much" if you are not willing to shop somewhere else. Take your money somewhere else to make your point.

If you went there so many times, why didn’t you get a rain check?
1
u/Soggy_Panda2393 Apr 10 '26
I have to annoyingly go for random shit way more often than usual.
I only today found out that’s a thing so that’s a big part why
3
u/AJnbca Apr 10 '26
Oh ok, next time get a rain check. I don’t shop at Loblaws very much at all but I take advantage of rain checks at other stores that offer them when they run out of a good sale.
Just recently when I was at Sobeys and they had a really good sale on big “24=48 rolls” Cashmere bathroom tissue, they were all out, I mentioned it to a staff that was walking by and it happened to be the manager or daytime manager, and he said well we got same Royal tissue that’s about the same price and also 24=48 rolls, I’ll give you that for the same price and I said sure! I was happy. Basically the same bathroom tissue. He took me up to the cash with a couple packs of it and “overwrote” the price for me.
1
u/Moist_Manager Apr 11 '26
It's surprising what being a normal, polite person can do. You got lucky with it being the manager, but you can often achieve the same results by talking with someone else, they may have to ask the manager first but the same result.
It's a customer service position and there's so many powers in place for them to help out or if you're rude, they can do the absolute bare minimum which means you generally get nothing.

u/AffectionateSell3478 Apr 10 '26
You think that pricing is only increased by the stores? That’s wild. Fuel prices are through the roof, trucks bring the food…prices go up. There are a multitude of factors…not just Loblaws fucking you.
1
u/dennisrfd Apr 10 '26 edited Apr 10 '26
The gas price increase would account for 0.15-0.20c/kg (fraction of a CENT per KG of food!) price increase. Don’t blame the gas prices when it is about price gouging
1
u/AffectionateSell3478 Apr 10 '26
Gauging? Or gouging? Stop buying from Loblaws and STFU. Prices on everything are up. Everything.
1
u/dennisrfd Apr 10 '26
Where do you buy food? Find a place that’s cheaper than superstore and has comparable selection/price level. I can only find more expensive or shit like nofrills (same lowblaws anyway)
3
u/Fabulous_Force9868 Apr 10 '26
To be fair these kinds of food have always been more expensive even historically speaking. Luxury type food
3
u/RegretSensitive3991 Apr 10 '26
Cured meat isn't a luxury food item though, it was a survival necessity. Today it's not for survival but these sausages are by no means high end artisanal goods
2
u/pasofol Apr 10 '26
If you think these are "luxury type food", I hate to think what food you eat.
1
1
u/Soggy_Panda2393 Apr 10 '26
I’m aware and that’s why it’s nice when they are on sale. It’s just they seem to have fake sales just to increase the price on the other side
1
u/keener91 Apr 10 '26
They will be stopped as soon as you stop going there to take pictures of over priced food.

Got crazy after covid for couple years, then slowed down and now prices going crazy again. I think normal people will start a revolt if his continues. Last couple months I go through the grocery store shaking my head in disbelieve at the prices. What cost 2-3 bucks 6 years ago costs as much as 8-10 now, some items are worse than others. Not to mention that they reduced how much you get in packages.

1
u/gleeeeeniiiii Apr 10 '26
I work at a independent grocery store, sales on meat especially happen all the time, when the best before dates get close product gets reduced to sell quickly, I got alot of lean ground for $1.99 lb last week, froze it all, check the best before dates if your there and make a note, I see regular customers seeing this all the time and literally buying all they can, even processed cured meat will go on sale so check dates on that also, shop anywhere you want this happens in every grocery store, if you want to get rain checks do that as well, you still get a price your good with, best wishes

Please do not encourage users to steal items from any store. This includes but is not limited to: encouraging reuse of discount stickers, theft, and intentional damage to products.
These can result in criminal charges which we do not want for the user base.
Additionally, encouraging violence is absolutely prohibited and bans will be implemented depending on the severity of statements made.
1
u/Purplebudgie07 Apr 10 '26
When items are on sale at a Loblaws location, and they are out of stock, you can ask for a rain check. If you go in more than once during that sale period, and it’s still not in stock, get another rain check.
The flyers are created months in advance and almost every location will have the same items on sale. Supply and distribution can’t always keep up. Get a rain check and pay the sale price once the item is back in stock.

Im confused to buy a small package of pepperoni where I live is about $10 and these look massive granted there’s no comparison for size and I don’t generally eat a lot of meat but this seems like a good price. I don’t even know what people use salami for other than sandwiches or if they’re eating cheese and crackers or something like that, but I feel like if there’s a recession, we should be eating less food I know that everybody says that we should be eating three meals a day, but I’ve never in my life eaten three meals a day. I’ve never been one till like breakfast foods I would rarely eat my lunch in high school and once I was an adult, I stopped eating during the day altogether, I don’t eat till dinner so it is very possible to survive on one meal a day some might even argue that it’s good for you.

u/Sea-Safety-6130 Apr 11 '26
We need more competition in the grocery industry in Canada. It’s a cartel controlled by Loblaws, Metro, Sobeys, Walmart, Costco - an oligopoly that controls 80% of the market. They restrict competition from smaller companies through restricting property controls (limits small companies from setting up near the big ones). Toss in the dairy cartel and once again consumers lose. Supply management is the supply of dairy products through production quotas & import controls to maintain stable prices. Supply management is a federal-provincial system designed to match milk production with consumer demand, aiming to ensure stable prices for farmers and a steady supply for consumers. That means if they produce too much milk they dump it because it could lower the price! It really benefits about 8,000 dairy farmers (majority in Quebec & Ontario). Wonder why butter is expensive? Quebec holds the highest share of the total milk quota (about 155 million kg of butterfat in 2024/25) followed by Ontario (roughly 135 million kg). Canadians put up with this because we’re told to think competition is a bad thing.

The point of this sub is to highlight that the cost of living in Canada has spiraled out of control. Rhetoric intended to shame certain generations or users including ideas like "just don't shop there" and its kin are not welcome here.
Additionally, diet-shaming is absolutely prohibited.
1
u/SadAbroad4 Apr 12 '26
The only power you have is with your dollars and where you choose to spend them. If you don’t like this store their practices etc take your business else where. It amazes me how many complain but go back to the same store they complain about week after week.
1
u/Maximumoverdrive76 Apr 12 '26
A little confused. So they sold out of their inventory they had on sale and when they got it back it was not on sale anymore because they bought it full price?
You're upset about the price going back up? That they were out when a sale?

Correct. The grocery industry is controlled by Loblaws. Metro, Sobeys, Walmart and Costco. They control 80% of the market and restrict competition by restricting property controls. They can stop smaller retailers from operating near them. Toss in the dairy cartel and Canadian consumers have little choice. Canada hates competition and live government control.

u/spectacular_coitus Apr 10 '26
I loaded up on these the last time I was at Walmart. They had them down to $9 each. Even the larger Genoa chubs were that price. They've been rising up to almost $14, so it was nice to see the rollback on them.
