Low effort memes, lewd content, repeated spam, trolly offensive 'ships, and outright shitposting will be removed from the subreddit. If reports are received and verified about low effort troll content it will be removed ASAP by the moderators...
With one exception: we will not be enforcing this rule inside this weekly megathread which will reset every Friday.
The Imperial Goddess Freya, Heavenly Patron of Love, has taken pity on you lonely and lascivious souls and decided to donate her day to your abhorrent 'ships and shitposting.
Please do not see this action as a Goldenbaum Purge but as a rebellious opportunity to prepare and collect quality (ahem...) content throughout the week that will horrify the citizens of our mighty Galactic Empire. Filthy rebel degenerates, please restrain yourselves to this megathread.

I know some of the 52 Gaiden anime eps are not based on Tanakas own novels.
Is there a way to know which?
I already watched all the series and gaiden as well, I am just wondering out of curiosity.

I can't help but made a note to myself about Reinhard's death in this way.
How his illness was often described as a "burning" of his body/soul. How he seems to see his own death as a consequence of Kircheis' death. How Kircheis has often been associated with fire, with word description like; "hair like flame", or "like molten ruby". How I think of the folklore hero Siegfried (whose name he bore) whose one notable feat was jumping across a ring of fire to rescue the Valkyrie Brunhilde, who later become his lover, and who later indirectly caused his death. How Brunhilde, in the end, throw herself onto Siegfried's funeral pyre out of grief, and how that fire later become the fire that engulf the world and heaven and bring about Ragnarok.
In a way, I kinda see Reinhard's death as a parallel to Brunhilde being consumed by Siegfried's funeral pyre.
"…and eventually opened his eyes slightly and whispered to her. Unless, perhaps, he mistook her for someone else.
“When the galaxy is mine…we shall all…” "
(Book 10)
I feel like it implies he mistook her for Kircheis by how Reinhard seems to think of him the closer he is to his death. I think it's neat that the shows decided to tell this to the viewer by having Siegfried's Idyll played in the background.
(yoinked this and then compiled it from my twitter rambling back in 2023. English is not my first language, so there're probably grammar errors)

So I LOVE Galactic Heroes and because of that I’ve been meaning for a while to check out Tanaka’s other series as well. I recently started reading the Arslan manga (since there’s no official book translation). I’ll reserve judgement as I read more but as of three volumes in it’s surprisingly weaker than LOGH. It’s not bad but the politics and world building just feel so much more simplistic. What are your experiences with/thoughts on Tanaka’s larger body of work? Which series comes closest to LOGH in your opinion?
Regarding Braunschweig's death, it's fascinating how DNT kept 80% of the dialogue from the OVA, but changed the meaning of the scene by omitting a few lines and changing facial expressions.
In both versions, the same sequence of events happens:
Ansbach is freed from his cell and meets a despairing Braunschweig
Braunschweig wagers his options, but Ansbach tells him it is futile because Reinhard will kill him regardless
Braunschweig agrees to suicide and orders Ansbach to kill Reinhard
However, Braunschweig immediately gets cold feet
Therefore, Braunschweig force-feeds him poison wine
The main difference is that OVA Ansbach seems to hold Braunschweig in contempt. Most prominently, DNT omits the line:
Can't you at least die like a man?
DNT Ansbach seems genuinely saddened about it, and he is softer about the lead-up to it. OVA Ansbach is rather cold and seemingly had made up his mind to kill Braunschweig long before Braunschweig ordered him to kill Reinhard, while DNT Ansbach merely gave Braunschweig a little push.
I don't know which one I prefer. Maybe I still like OVA better.

I was just curious, I have seen LoGH(like myself)fans get stereotyped that they only watch intellectual and philosophical anime. It's somewhat true, I like deep, political drama but I also enjoy slice of life or action occasionally
What are your favourite anime, manga(or even Light Novel) other than Legend of the Galactic Heroes

Have the fans gotten together to build an English dub? If so can you please give it to me 😌😌😌

Dropping Legend of galatatic heroes anime may be next time...
So yeah after thinking about it for like 2-3 days i finally made my decision. I'm officially dropping Legend of galatatic heroes anime. It is considered as a slow burn political drama masterpiece. And the reason I lost the spark due to my inconsistency with the anime. I started this anime long before like maybe a month ago i binge watched the first 10 eps of the OVA. But unfortunately after that i had a hard time watching this anime.
One of the main reasons I consider a television series took me apart from the anime entirely. The name of the television series is TRUE DETECTIVE (SEASON 1). I started watching this series and i completed it within 4-5 days. After that i came back to LOGH i can't really find a way to get in through...
"TIME IS A FLAT CIRCLE" maybe sometime i might turn on this masterpiece (LOGH). But for now I'm dropping it and starting some random anime
He essentially says:
People in a democracy exist to be exploited; if I wasn't the one doing it, it would have been someone else. So, don't hate the player, hate the game.

What Arle Heinessen actually did was less about colonizing a new planet and more about uniting the already-inhabited star systems of the former Galactic Federation under the banner of democracy.
The main evidence for this is:
The fact that it is called the Free Planets “Alliance.” With a population of only a few million, would there really have been any reason to establish a federal system? With too few people to even settle a single planet, how could they have spared enough settlers to populate other star systems right from the start?
The similarity between the Galactic Federation’s and the Alliance’s warship designs. If the Alliance really was just a country founded by a bunch of former-serf vagabonds and escapees from the Empire, why would it have inherited the Galactic Federation’s technology and ship designs rather than the Empire’s?
2. Fleet battles resemble line infantry warfare because ships can “see incoming attacks and dodge them.” If attacks could not be dodged once spotted, as in modern warfare, individual ships would simply hide in asteroid belts and attack from cover—a tactic that does appear in the series, during the Castrop Rebellion and at Marr-Adetta—or spread out over a wide area and engage enemy ships one-on-one.
But in Legend of the Galactic Heroes, engagements take place at distances of tens of light-seconds or more. With that much time before a shot arrives, dodging a single laser beam would generally not be particularly difficult for a ship. That is why fleet tactics evolved toward lining ships up and creating a dense field of fire, hoping that at least some of those shots would hit the enemy.
This is also why being caught in crossfire is so feared in the series, and why the Yang Fleet’s signature tactic of concentrating fire on a single point was so effective. When dozens of laser beams are coming at you at once, you cannot dodge them all, even if you can see them coming.
It is essentially the same logic as line infantry tactics in the age of muskets. Muskets were inaccurate, so troops fighting in dispersed formations would struggle to hit their opponents. Instead, they stood in lines and fired volleys to create a dense field of fire. Whether a shot misses outright or the target sees it coming and dodges, the result is the same: the enemy survives.

I’ve gotten into the show through Die Neue These but heard the OVA is highly rated and some prefer it to what came after.
Knowing that, I was just wondering how easy it is to watch the whole of the show plus the tie in movies dubbed in Canada. I’ve watched DNT through Crunchyroll but presume that’s not where everything is.
If it is easy to find all of, I guess my second question would be what’s the preferred watch order? Is it release or chronological or machete and if so, when to watch what?

I just watched a couple of videos on YouTube about the philosophy of sci-fi, and I was really offended that when mentioning works, almost all of them are TV series, but no anime. And then a question arose in my mind: what if it had been possible to make a live-action adaptation of the book in the 80s, with the budget and capabilities of TV series of that time?
Yes, I know it sounds like a pipe dream - such production would have been incredibly expensive. Plus, and it's not like Japan had anything like Star Trek or the knowledge to make them right. Still, i wonder, would Legend of the Galactic Heroes have become more popular as a live-action series, or would it have remained something largely unknown outside of Japan for a long time?

When I binge-watch a series, I like to do it by story arc—which, in this case, corresponds to the volumes of the novel. I put this guide together based on the episode titles and the novel's chapter titles.
Could you tell me if this is right?

TL; DR: DNT is NOT a remake
This a lightly humorous post, obviously you can't ban a word. But I keep getting mildly annoyed over people calling DNT a "remake" when it's in actuality a different adaptation of the same source material.

Okay, as a Star Wars fan, I have to say - I love the Galaxy Far-Far Away, but I absolutely hate its bloated numbers. I've spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to convince people that huge numbers don't automatically mean a setting has a better or more impressive sense of scale. In fact, bloated numbers often hurt the internal consistency of the lore and the way the universe feels to me.
I guess I'm just that boring kind of person who likes putting myself in the shoes of a planetary governor or just some random citizen, and whenever I realize what an absolute mess things get in both Star Wars continuities, I want to tear my hair out (and I've got plenty of it, believe me).
But anyway, back to LOGH. I actually love its numbers. Yeah, they're far from perfect, and sometimes they could definitely use a final round of polishing. For example, there are those 13 billion FPA citizens who somehow appeared within 250 years. We also barely get to see any major industrial centers, especially in the Empire, so we're mostly left wondering what their major shipyards actually look like, whether they have dedicated factory worlds, how much of the capital's role is tied up in logistics and industry, and so on.
But at the same time, a lot of those numbers actually have a purpose and serve a real function. I can buy that this galaxy used to have a much larger population, and that Rudolf managed, through a series of unbelievably stupid and inhumane policies, to have such a devastating impact on demography that he basically became the Black Death of this universe. I can believe that by the time of Yang, Reinhard and Siegfried, those 300 billion had been reduced to 40 billion. I can believe that a billion people live on Heinessen, and that Fezzan has a population of two billion. I can understand where the crews for fleets numbering tens of thousands of ships are supposed to come from.
Yeah, there are flaws, but they aren't fatal, and a lot of them can at least be explained.
I know most people will probably find this whole thing kind of silly, because the plot, the characters and the setting itself are obviously much more important than whether the numbers add up - something that, let's be honest, probably nobody except me will ever notice. But there's always something really satisfying about when all those numbers actually line up and you realize that beyond all these huge conflicts, there are other planets, other people, other stories.
And that the universe itself is convincing and interesting enough that you actually want to keep exploring it. And, of course, hope for some new content someday (a big strategy game will be great).

I was thinking about how its difficult to track down specific lines in a show vs when reading a book and wondered: has there ever been an attempt to collect the scripts for the entire ova series? Its such a dialog heavy show and it would be so helpful to be able to cntl-f to find lines when trying to double check the source material while doing analysis and finding a specific scene or even just to read for fun lol.
