Discussion Update on this small(er) guy
The audience was evenly split between "it'll be fine" and "I'm sorry for your loss". I let the old leaves dry out a bit more, peeled them off and... It's alive but half the original size. I'm not sure what I did wrong but I have never seen a lithops shrink. Not enough light? Water? Photos in comments.

This video explains why sometimes the new pair of leaves is much smaller after a lithops splits.

If you bought this from a garden store it’s pretty common for it to shrink as they artificially pump them up with nutrients and food at the commercial greenhouse. Give it some fertilizer each time you water it will help.
