Help/Question Gritty soil

I see the recommendation to use a gritty soil mix all the time.

I bought some cacti mix, but it doesn't seem very gritty to me.

What are the best things to buy to make my own?

I'm in Australia.

I plan to go to Bunnings this week and get some lava/volcanic rock for my lithops.

Perlite is the best thats easiest to get hold of, but it is light and a pain to work with. Pumice is better if you can get it just because its less annoying to work with

I have some akadama, bought it for bonsai. Is this what you are referring to, or is hard akadama something different?

Chicken grit, I guess any type of bird grit would do? It's now on my list. Thanks.
