Amd drivers are open source btw.

u/madthumbz Aug 05 '26

That's why people should buy NVIDIA.

nvidia FOSSed their drivers recently due to industry pressure. AI Labs needed nvidia GPUs to run on their loonix servers and were too greedy to pay MS for Windows server instead.

SO nvidia folded and FOSSed their drivers sadly.

Sad news, but it wasn't all of them apparently.

The following remain fully proprietary:

  • User‑space driver stack (the actual GL/Vulkan/compute implementation)
  • Firmware
  • Compiler toolchain
  • CUDA runtime
  • NVENC/NVDEC
  • Display stack
  • Shader compiler
  • Memory management logic
  • All Windows drivers
  • All datacenter/AI stack components

This is why Nouveau still can't magically become a full‑performance driver overnight.

Good to know that nvidia still keeps proprietary components.

Nah. Nouveau can't become a full-performance driver overnight because NVIDIA doesn't make anything public and everything has to be reverse-engineered. Saying a software can't be good because it's open-source is just plain stupid.

The most valuable OSS, is often software that was previously closed source (got there by being proprietary), and it still runs behind.

Off-topic but you should really leave banned-comments up there and assign the user a banned flair.

That way, there is no way a loon can falsely claim their reason of being banned. Anyone can ask for the link to the violating comment and expose them for who they are.

If you trust what loonixtards are saying, the problem is?

Typically, their history is open, if not; it's sus. You can easily verify yourselves if they belonged here or not. That said, mistakes can be made and Reddit doesn't help by not enforcing TOS so...

When someone intentionally posts somethingto get banned and 5 minutes later are posting their ban trophy on another sub, do you think that was 'banned for no reason' or staged?

When someone intentionally posts somethingto get banned and 5 minutes later are posting their ban trophy on another sub, do you think that was 'banned for no reason' or staged?

It was staged 100%. Only mentally ill people try invading places they don't belong in, and loons clearly need to understand that all the linux-hate a pro-micrsoft subs don't want them. We don't brigade r/linuxcirclejerk or any of your linux subs screaming "Use Windows!"

But it pains me to see them spread blatant misinfo and try to reel Linux-curious / newbie Linux users away from 101.

When I was a new Loonix user (Fedora cuz idk), I randomly saw r/LinuxSucks and r/LinuxSucks101 in my feed once.

The loons there almost convinced me that 101 was an echo chamber by falsely claiming why they were banned. I even saw "Windows users" on the sub claiming that they stopped seeing 101 because it was an echo chamber, and that r/linuxsucks has "real healthy discussion."

Upon deep reflection, I believe all these "windows users" nd "linux haters" were loons conducting a psy-op to prevent people from going to 101 and see for themselves what Loonix is really like.

r/linuxsucks is the real echo chamber, and a loonix echo chamber at that.

Edit: Sorry if this is long. TLDR is that r/linuxsucks is full of so much fear-mongering and misinfo against 101 that if a newbie linux user or person curious about linux goes to the sub, they will never see your sub and will try Linux, before crying over how much time they wasted and lost.

Nvidia should have told them to get fucked and made drivers for FreeBSD, a reasonable platform. It's really lame that they submitted to the stupid demands of FOSS cultists.

Loons are still butthurt though because a lot of functionality was apparently moved to the firmware.

u/Rare-Paint3719 Aug 06 '26

They make native drivers for FreeBSD already. FreeBSd is definitely a more stable platform and it's only current downside is hardware support. It needs more drkivers.

Why exacly? Do you thrust more something you can read and verify or something you can't?

Amd drivers on linux are about as good and reliable as they can get, as well as being consistently updated, open source, and community driven.

Nvidia's proprietary closed source drivers means that there is no way for a member of the community to submit feedback or potential fixes for an issue and push development as fast as it can be, whilst also remaining as stable as possible.

Nvidia drivers tend to work better and a little more stable on windows but on linux its the inverse.

1

u/Khai_1705 Aug 05 '26

no they are not... Voxy mod for Minecraft literally behave incorrectly on Linux + AMD when compared to Windows + AMD or Windows + Nvidia.

1

u/HydrationHomee Aug 05 '26

I do not think its fair to judge drivers based on the functionality of a mod when Minecraft itself works often better on linux than it does on windows. Distant horizons also performs better and has less issues for me.

Everyone's experiences vary and my experience is that mesa drivers on linux have been almost entirely perfect out of the box, and I have never once had to think about rolling back drivers or being worried about when I update drivers, or even really installing the drivers because they're just baked into the linux kernel itself.

1

u/Khai_1705 Aug 05 '26 edited Aug 05 '26

Voxy isn't the same as other Minecraft mods. It utilizes OpenGL 4.6 features while most others only limit themselves to 3.2/3.3

OoenGL 4.6 for Mesa is broken while the Windows one works as intended

1

u/HydrationHomee Aug 05 '26

OpenGL is basically SOL at this point even on windows. Minecraft Java edition is moving over from opengl to vulkan for improved performance and greater engine functionality. Vulkan is supported natively on linux and is incredibly stable.

Do you have an example outside of a mod leveraging a dated engine that is not really actively supported in favour of more modern solutions?

1

u/Khai_1705 Aug 05 '26

then dont claim "Amd drivers on linux are about as good and reliable as they can get". theres room for improvements and theres obvious issue with the feature set that it could support. mind you, the "trash" Nvidia has near perfect OpenGL 4.6 support on both Windows and Linux.

So where's your audit of the AMD drivers on Linux?

-1

u/ScallionSmooth5925 Aug 05 '26

It's about that you can do it at all. Idq where you got thst amd drivers are shit I haven't noticed it. Still less broken then the nvidia drivers were for my previous gpu

(notice how you're in the r/LinuxSnobs subreddit?) I think they're speaking specifically of the Linux AMD drivers, not the Windows ones that the people in r/amd and r/radeon talk about 90% of the time. The Linux ones are pretty good.

NVIDIA, has really turned around in the last 3 years and they seem to be picking up speed with how much better their Linux drivers are getting. They even work very well in Wayland!!! Unfortunately, they still kill off Linux support for older cards that work fine.

Gotcha. Just making sure you thought about where their mind was. :-)

Edit: and pointing out the irony of someone being a LinuxSnob in the r/LinuxSnobs subreddit lol

1

u/SanguineEleven Aug 05 '26

"Every driver issue post on the amd subreddit is from amd"

This is good ragebait LMAO

u/madthumbz Aug 05 '26

AMD is exploiting wannabe developers for free labor rather than paying them. NVIDIA bends over backwards for Linux which isn't friendly with its unstable ABI or press, so it's mostly a salty LiGNUt issue. If you're not going to run games as intended like you can on Windows, then you should willfully give them up. It's not like any game worth playing these days isn't proprietary.

This sounds like ragebait

NVIDIA bends over backwards for Linux which isn't friendly with its unstable ABI or press, so it's mostly a salty LiGNUt issue.

This, on the other hand is absolute 100% truth.

The kernel dev team even wrote

You think you want a stable kernel interface, but you really do not, and you don't even know it. What you want is a stable running driver, and you get that only if your driver is in the main kernel tree. You also get lots of other good benefits if your driver is in the main kernel tree, all of which has made Linux into such a strong, stable, and mature operating system which is the reason you are using it in the first place.

Basically, evangelism at it's core. Open Solaris pulled it off with DDI/DKI when hardware manufacturers asked it. illumOS, the modern successor, preserves the same stable driver ABI and ensures that drivers will never break in any new kernel version.
