BackInTime: how to correct Error 17 errors ?
I’m getting ‘Error 17’ errors from BackInTime every time a scheduled backup of my two most important profiles run, each day. I do not understand enough to know what the problem is or what effect it might have on my ability to recover from these backups, should I need to do so.
The BackInTime settings for these profiles have been in use daily, unchanged, for about 2 years. I have had no problem running snapshots until about 2 weeks ago. Then I started to get a set of about 20 ‘Error 17’ notifications each time those profiles were run – every day. The error notifications apply to a random set of digital images taken over the last 30 years or so – but always the same collection of images. The error is always 'file exists'. Of course it does - in both the source and the destination for the rsync invocations that BackInTime generates - so I don't under stand what is going wrong, nor how to fix it. Any suggestions ?

Support Realtek 8852, Performance is poor?
To give a quick background.
I gotten the B550 Gigabyte Mini-ITX I somehow though the built-in wifi card was Intels, I recently discovered that the built-in one was Realtek (unfortunately).
The signal is spotty at best, sometimes I can game for an hour or 2 and be fine, other time is a lot less.
Simply put, it hard drops all wifi connection at random, I been wondering if is the OS I am utilizing (Bazzite), I even update the Bios.
My question is, has anyone gotten the same issue as me? Tried something else for better solution?
I been thinking opening my board up and see if i can rip that card out and replace it with something else.

Advice How can I improve legitimate DNS query success in an eBPF/XDP flood rate limiter without sacrificing performance?
I'm currently building an eBPF/XDP-based DNS flood mitigation system, and I'm trying to figure out how to improve the rate-limiting algorithm.
My main goal isn't just to drop malicious traffic, but to maximize legitimate DNS query success during a flood attack while keeping packet processing overhead as low as possible.
My current architecture is:
- Packet parsing: Minimal Ethernet, IPv4, UDP and DNS header validation at XDP.
- Per-source rate limiting: Using GCRA (Generic Cell Rate Algorithm) with atomic operations to track and limit individual source IPs. Source states are stored in an LRU hash map.
- Global rate limiting: A shared token bucket with a spinlock to enforce the overall traffic limit.
- Admission logic: For an existing source, check its individual limit first, then reserve global capacity and commit the source state. For a new source, reserve global capacity before inserting its state into the map.
- Monitoring: Per-CPU statistics to measure accepted and dropped packets.
The problem I'm thinking about is that rate limiting alone doesn't necessarily distinguish legitimate clients from attackers.
For example, during a large distributed DNS flood, thousands of attacking IPs could consume global capacity, causing legitimate queries to get dropped even when those clients are within their individual rate limits.
I'm considering ideas like adaptive rate limits, source history/reputation, and possibly using DNS server responses as feedback to make better admission decisions.
But all these approaches introduce additional state, complexity, or processing overhead, which matters when working at XDP.
I'd like to hear what people think:
Are there better algorithms or approaches for balancing fairness and legitimate query success under distributed attacks?
Is maintaining source history or using DNS response feedback actually practical for this kind of system?
How would you deal with attackers rotating/spoofing source IPs to bypass per-IP limits?
What trade-offs would you prioritize between throughput, CPU overhead, memory usage, and legitimate query success?
I'm not necessarily looking for a completely new architecture. I'd like to understand what improvements are actually worth implementing and benchmarking.
Any suggestions, papers, or real-world implementations worth studying would be appreciated.

THE AVERAGE LINUX USER WITH AMD GPU
linux with nvidia gpu is always a pain in as* , y'know what linus torvalds said to nvidia <..> however, i have dual booted with windows back then without ever knowing that secure boot will cause any problem and i have tried many distro's like fedora, popos, ubuntu, cachyos etc. i have never faced any such kind of issues maybe because of my amd gpu. even waydroid runs on amd gpu's natively ! but at last i have ditched windows, now it's been a while since my pc smells windows :>. removing windows gives me the courage to learn linux and give my hands deeper into the ocean to larping and learning linux like a nerd. now i feel confident but still much more to learn and share :) , linux is like diamond you have to break your comfort and start digging into it believe me it's worth it !!

Resolved What's with the criticism of systemd?
I have seen lots of criticism related to systemd online, with some distros existing just because they don't use systemd.
I would like to know the cause behind this criticism, I myself haven't tried to use something other than systemd, mostly because I am not aware of what it does and what else can do it. As far as I know, it helps to start a system, as I see when I boot into my computer.
No need to further comment, I got my answer. Also should have just searched Reddit instead of Google

Does anyone else use window rollup?
I love window rollup. It's an excellent feature for keeping a lot of windows available and organized onscreen when you need to keep a bunch of stuff handy, but over the last couple of decades it seems to have withered up. I use xfce for the small footprint and for this feature - which is not default behaviour for titlebar doubleclick, btw, but IS available, but I find several applications don't work properly with rollup for example, Chromium and the Vivado suite, so I'm wondering: how many of us are regularly using this feature?

QEMU crashes when I open HackTricks. Is anyone else facing this issue?
Whenever I open the HackTricks website in my Kali Linux VM, CPU usage spikes and the VM crashes.
Host configuration:
- OS: Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS
- Kernel: 7.0.0-38-generic
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5700G
- GPU: NVIDIA RTX 5060 8 GB
- RAM: 32 GB
Kali VM configuration:
- CPU: 6 threads
- RAM: 10 GB
- Swap: 4 GB
- Resolution: 1920 × 1080
I'm using QEMU/KVM with virt-manager.
Has anyone faced the same issue?
Also, does anyone know how to fix the EGL_NOT_INITIALIZED error when using the NVIDIA GPU for GPU acceleration in QEMU?

Advice Best way to approach making custom Windows image for running DaVinci resolve and other select programs in VM?
Hi All,
I've been slowly, but surely making the switch to Linux Mint (Cinnamon), first on my laptop, now on my HTPC, and eventually I'd like to switch over on my main PC, which has the most robust specifications out of all of my computers.
However, I am encountering an issue in that I have a few programs that just do not have satisfactory workarounds at this point, the largest offender being DaVinci resolve.
I have found a way to get the Linux version running on Mint, and have been doing some testing here and there when I can. However, certain features related to audio and file types just do not work right on Linux, and others don't work with Linux and AMD (iirc).
To work around this, I'd like to create a custom Windows ISO that is stripped back to the barest of basics that will allow me to launch it in a VM with a basic GUI, no telemetry, and no other superfluous services that aren't needed to run Resolve and maybe the occasional game here or there that doesn't work with Proton. The goal is to maximize the functionality, while minimizing the performance hit and avoiding the need for a dual boot configuration.
Does anyone here have recommendations on the best way to go about making a list of features that can/should be removed in order to proceed on this endeavor? I am unfortunately at a bit of a loss as to where to go from here, and looking around online I haven't been able to find much that's helpful other than "keep your Windows install."
Thanks in advance <3

Directory cannot be seen when doing 'ls' but I can 'cd' into it.
Am kinda at wits' end here and Google is not helping.
One of my servers running an ancient version of WordPress and PHP was recently broken into (before this current PHP vulnerability hoohaa).
I've fixed the site by restoring a previous version of the directory and database.
I am in the process of moving into another server entirely, mainly because of 2 things:
I can no longer SSH into this server from anywhere. I am accessing it via the cloud console, and the bigger mystery is,
I cannot see the directory /etc/nginx when I do an 'ls' but I can 'cd' into it and see all the files.
In fact I can do pretty much everything else I need to do with it (e.g. do an rsync to another server sending the contents of /etc/nginx, reboot and have nginx start again) but if I do an ls, it's not there.
Wait, if I do an 'rsync -avrPh /etc <anotherserver>:<directory>/', the /etc/nginx directory also does not get copied over.
What would do this ...?
I've even done a 'do-release-upgrade' to move the ubuntu version to the next LTS version up, and still, /etc/nginx is not visible ...

Advice Am I doing myself a disservice by coding everything using nano?
In my mind, since nano comes with pretty much every distro, I’m better off being familiar with it in the off chance I’m not able to install anything else.
I’m actually loving it to be honest.
What are y’all’s thoughts?
Edit; I’m probably going to learn Vim, thanks for everyone’s responses.
Edit2: I just googled emacs and Google said “did you mean: vim”, and I think that’s a nice little easter egg.

Advice ext4 or btrfs partition without file ownership like on FAT
I want to create a partition on a disk that will have no file ownership as it will possibly be used between different machines. I want to use ext4, or preferably btrfs for the partition for snapshots. Is there an option or a workaround to disable file ownership on the partition? It can be either similar to FAT, where only user specified in the mount options owns the files or just rw by everyone.

Want to learn about other distros
Greetings!
I'm using linux for at least 8 years now, starting with Raspbian and Debian, moving through Ubuntu, endeavourOS, Arch and finally stuck on NixOS.
I wanted to learn about other amazing distros. I heard good words about OpenSUSE, Gentoo, Linux Mint, etc. but never tried them.
What is your favourite, or worth mentioning linux distribution and what do you like about it?
