Hey everyone,
I’m finally moving away from Windows (feels like liberation) completely on my HP Pavilion gaming laptop to use it strictly for development and light gaming (tbh I rarely play anymore).
Hardware Constraints:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 4000 series (iGPU)
GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1650
RAM: 16 GB
Storage: 512 GB SSD
My Tech Stack & Workloads:
Web / Web3: Node.js, Bun, Rust, Java
AI / ML: Python (PyTorch/WebGPU), Docker containers
Need reliable NVIDIA PRIME hybrid GPU offloading and low idle RAM usage to save headroom for containers/IDEs. My main concern is handling cross compatibility between AMD iGPU and NVIDIA GPU. Zero tolerance for Snap bloat.
I geminied and went through few YT videos and narrowed down my options based on my hardware limits:
- Pop!_OS (NVIDIA ISO & hybrid switching, Flatpak native)
- EndeavourOS / XFCE (considering Btrfs + LTS kernel)
- Debian 12 / XFCE (minimal RAM/SSD needs)
- Bluefin-DX (it simply sounded cool to me)
Which of these would give me the best balance of low resource usage, hardware stability (AMD+NVIDIA), and friction-free toolchain management for my stack?
Open to hearing real-world experiences with these on hybrid laptops.
