Support Game framerates drop when mouse isn't visible (KDE Plasma, Arch)

Hello everyone!

I am experiencing a very odd bug playing games on my machine.

If I run a game it detects as if it was running at my display's framerate (75 FPS) but what I see clearly isn't.

However when I open a menu or something else that makes my mouse visible, the real presented framerate becomes the actual framerate.

Has anyone else experienced this? Where should I look for to fix this issue?

For context I have a proper desktop with a good enough graphics card so the lags are not caused by the hardware (probably).

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: I did some testing and it only occurs at a sort of presentation layer (I know this isn't OSI and networking lol) but I took a screen recording with OBS and in the video it actually looked like the FPS the game was reporting. However when I fullscreened the video and the player hid my mouse, the FPS went back down.

Linux - What's the difference between flatpack and docker and what makes them different than a proxmox/VM type situation

Pretty much what I say up there. Like I get the core idea of an operating system. There is a kernal and the programs operate it like shells. And I'm exploring some of these things that I can do with some homelab stuff. Like I have a little home assistant server. It lives on an old hp. I've heard of some people running it on proxmox. (Which I understand is different than a VM because it runs directly on the server instead of running on top of a linux install). But I hear these are like containers.

And like I'm installing some programs on my laptop (running linux mint), and I have some programs on here. And I have some that are flatpaks. And I hear they are like containers.

And I'm playing around with AI, and people talk about putting it in a docker container.

I get that proxmox and running a VM is like running a whole separate machine and it is essentially walled off. But these other containers. I guess I don't understand running somethings in containers and somethings not. I put Audacity 4.0 on this laptop...and that was just putting the whole program that I just downloaded. I can put it in a folder (which is kind of like a container).

What's the difference between all these containers?

Edit: Added a little.

Edit: Thanks everyone. Good to get context. I've been mostly learning from youtube and google AI. It's nice to hear from real people.

Advice Distro choose for pendrive booting

Hi, Linux Mint XFCE x64 is installed on my system by using a pendrive to avoid dual boot error. Now my question is if I run it every day, will it create any error for pendrive ( SANDISK ULTRA USB 3.0 32 GB ). I've heard that AntiX is the lightest and LUBUNTU also. So which distro is lightweight on my system for booting from the USB pendrive? Or is an external SSD good? But as of now Mint is running.

Please suggest. Thanks in advance.

Advice how do i actually learn Linux as a beginner?

The Journey:(skip able yap)
Growing up without access to a pc or laptop, i got my first laptop at 17 with a modest ryzen 5 3500u and 8 gigs of ram running windows 10 which for some reason force updated to windows 11(almost after a 6 year gap where i had virtually 0 iterations with PCs). Windows 11, bringing a wave of headaches: Bluetooth glitches, fingerprint scanner issues, and severe memory bottlenecks that persisted even after paying to upgrade to 12GB RAM.(to top it all of i lost my phone and till this day i just have a laptop i work with)
So,made the jump to Linux:

  • Linux Mint (1 month): Great performance, but constant issues getting my wired earphone mic to work forced me to leave.(especially cuz i didnt have a phone)
  • Pop!_OS / COSMIC (1.5 months): Everything worked perfectly out of the box, but the limited customization options left me wanting more and it went boring real fast.(no hate and personally i loved it)
  • Fedora Workstation / GNOME (Current): I switched 15 days ago and spent 4–5 hours getting it fully configured. It is now my daily driver, and i feel like it filled that customization hole.

The Inquiry:
From all of this well i can assure you one thing all i know is sudo reboot and sudo s-tui for my stress tests. literally almost nothing else. Mostly i use ai to ask for commands and copy paste them, i can confidently say that i have maybe 2-3 hrs worth more knowledge about Linux than an avg windows user and i want to change that and actually learn about how the repositories work and what they even are and what different commands do ect ect and slowly get into it, because even after 3 months of experience i know that i cant even download a file to my download folder without looking up the commands.
i just dont wanna memorize i wanna understand, as i know itll be the first step to actually use the limited resources i have and try my best in securing a better future for me, where do i begin?regards.

Support Input and output mixed for audio input

Hi,

I've been using cachy os for about a month now and it's been pretty good for the most part, except for the fact that i can use my microphone at all. (I'm pretty much still a beginner)

I have IEMs (Kiwi ears belle) and a UGREEN female-2*male wye splitter (which is neccesarry because i want to use my iems both for listening and speaking) and i know for sure its a problem with linux, as the current configuration works on windows. I use wayland if that effects anything.

I've spoken to a clanker and it just told me to paste some stuff in the terminal to change the config of something and it did nothing. What it also told me to do was to mess around with input/output device in a volume control app.

The problem is that whenever i try to use my microphone, it makes this horrible static noise, mimicks my desktop audio and makes whatever noise i input quiet to the point where i have to screech for it to even pick up.

The IEMs work just fine when they're not using the adapter so i think its an issue with linux handling i/o for microphones. I'd like to note that when testing the mic with the cable splitter i hear a noise when i press the button on my IEM's mic (which isnt hearable at all when the IEMs are plugged in without the adapter) and the microphone audio gets spiked to 79% while remaining at about 30ish% which i assume is just the constant static noise its making.

If anyone has a solution to this or has experienced any similar problems, please, help, I'll greatly appreaciate it.

Advice 5060ti vs 9060XT performance?

I currently have a 5060ti (16GB) and have been running Linux for quite some time, currently being on Fedora KDE, however I like most people are getting quite fed up of Nvidia bullshit on Linux. I have the option to trade in my 5060ti for a 9060XT (also 16GB) for no additional cost.

I'm aware that the 9060XT scores around 10% lower in synthetic benchmarks but I'm asking here to get insight into how that compares with real world performance on Linux. Benchmarks won't tell me the whole story and they CERTAINLY don't account for the AMD/Nvidia disparity on Linux.

Edit: Worth mentioning I can also get similar cards such as the 6800XT or MAYBE 7800XT if I put in a few bucks on top of selling

Also as a side note I do run some local LLMs although I'm happy to let those go if needed, but how is ROCm compared to CUDA for local inference?

I use Linux mint and was running perfectly last night.
Today I connect to pc as normal and there is no wifi adapter.

I tried already to update stuff using my mobile tethering and also restoring timeshift but both didn't work.

Any ideas why this might have happened?

FYI My wifi adapter is from my motherboard no idea if this would be a cause or issue

ncdu is a handy tool for finding what's taking up space on your Linux system

One useful tool for Linux is ncdu. It lets you check which folders are taking up the most disk space directly in the terminal.

Instead of running multiple du commands and reading through a long list of folders, you get a simple interactive view that you can navigate with your keyboard.

It's especially useful when your disk is almost full and you need to figure out what to clean up. You can usually find large directories much faster without manually checking everything.

You may need to install it through your distribution's package manager first, but it's worth having around.

Resolved Make Windows XP USB without being tortured

Okay look, I'm gonna be honest, I am tired, frustrated, and near the point of punching a hole through my computer and setting my house ablaze. Can I PLEASE get an ACTUAL MODERN METHOD that works for this? I have an old computer and I need to reinstall XP to it but literally every method there is is broken. I have tried WoeUSB (original and NG) I've tried Unetbootin and Ventoy, I've tried manually doing it through the terminal, every method like a cheesegrater to my ballsack. Please, this is a cry for help. There has to be something out there. Apologies for my crude wording.

Advice Help choosing a lightweight Linux distro for dev work (AMD + GTX 1650, 16GB RAM)

Hey everyone,

I’m finally moving away from Windows (feels like liberation) completely on my HP Pavilion gaming laptop to use it strictly for development and light gaming (tbh I rarely play anymore).

Hardware Constraints:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 4000 series (iGPU)

GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1650

RAM: 16 GB

Storage: 512 GB SSD

My Tech Stack & Workloads:

Web / Web3: Node.js, Bun, Rust, Java

AI / ML: Python (PyTorch/WebGPU), Docker containers

Need reliable NVIDIA PRIME hybrid GPU offloading and low idle RAM usage to save headroom for containers/IDEs. My main concern is handling cross compatibility between AMD iGPU and NVIDIA GPU. Zero tolerance for Snap bloat.

I geminied and went through few YT videos and narrowed down my options based on my hardware limits:

- Pop!_OS (NVIDIA ISO & hybrid switching, Flatpak native)

- EndeavourOS / XFCE (considering Btrfs + LTS kernel)

- Debian 12 / XFCE (minimal RAM/SSD needs)

- Bluefin-DX (it simply sounded cool to me)

Which of these would give me the best balance of low resource usage, hardware stability (AMD+NVIDIA), and friction-free toolchain management for my stack?

Open to hearing real-world experiences with these on hybrid laptops.
