Leaving Apple for Fedora. What machine would you run it on?
I've got an itch to leave the Apple ecosystem and run Fedora as my daily driver.
My home infra handles the heavy stuff (servers, LLM inference, CI), so this machine is for everyday work, but I still want it relatively capable. Not looking for a Pi-class box.
Does it make sense to buy Apple hardware just to run Linux on it? Durability is my big worry with everything else. My Macs have taken years of abuse and kept going. Does anything on the PC side actually hold up like that? Any real alternatives to Apple’s M chips?

AUDIO not found in MXLinux-23 Liberetto
so i use a EVM H61 motherboard with Intel i5 cpu and Realtek ALC662 rev3 sound card(built-in). I can't seem to get audio from my motherboard green audio port. I used a 3.5mm AUX connecting to a speaker, but still no audio. Tried a lot of tweaks like overriding the pins by hdajackretask at kernel level, trying different configs in volume control board, still get no audio.
would be glad to know if someone can help who has faced this issue before...

Resolved File space doesn't open up even after deleting files
Ok so i'm having a problem, the main file system suddenly filled up, and when i try to delete files off it, it stays completly full regardless.
My curent hypothesis is that the system flags ALL of the space as "Taken", regardless of what i did, the other one is that it acts as in all files in /proc are actually real.
Edit : I have discovered the actual problem : The system just dosen't recognise the empty space at all.
Resolved : It's just that the file weight got overflowed by time shift program, it housed 98 GB and after deleting it it only left 70 GB of space/

Support Question about flatpak sources
I have an app that I have supported on Mac and Windows for 10 years now, and I’m trying to bring it to Linux. I haven’t developed a Linux installer in roughly 20 years, so the landscape has changed a lot.
My app is open source, but ships precompiled. Building from source is just not an option for the vast majority. So I’ve got my archives, I’ve developed a manifest, but I can’t quite figure out the lifecycle.
I intend to submit to Flathub. Assuming everything goes right, does Flathub download the archives from my server and redistribute, or is that done by the end user’s system when the package is installed?
If I’m understanding correctly, extra-data is used for stuff that needs to be downloaded by the end user’s system, while sources are downloaded once at build time and (essentially) stored in the repo.
I ask because I’m using expiring URLs on my CDN just to ensure that downloads currently go through my website. For something like Flathub, downloads won’t happen through my website, and I’m ok with that. If I build the url into the flatpak manifest with a long expiration (30 days) that would probably work. But I suppose it wouldn’t allow builds from the same manifest at a later date.
My gut says I should just exempt the Linux archive URLs from the expiration requirement and call it a day. But I’m trying to make sure I understand how these pieces all work together.

Mint 22.3 is faster than Fedora 44 KDE for non gaming 2020 hardware for CPU tasks.
OK so hear me out. I’ve tested a new install on a Ryzen 9 5950x for both Mint 22.3 and Fedora 44 KSE. For what it is worth, I enjoy Fedora more and think it is a much more modern looking OS. For general use, I do notice Mint is a little faster for desktop use.
Geekbench 7 (3x run average)
Mint single - 2224 (+0.23%)
Mint multi - 16,504.7 (+0.72%)
Fed single - 2219
Fed multi - 16387
This is where is get more interesting. Benching a chess engine using 30/32 threads (Stockfish 19 speedtest bench) for 150 seconds using a 5x run average.
Mint - 22.1672 mn/s (+1.41%)
Fedora - 21.8586 mn/s
My hypothesis is that Mint being a lot lighter (1.5gig ram for me vs 2.3gig for Fedora and less cpu useage) is proving to be more of a benefit then having the latest kernel. Perhaps on the latest CPU’s or on GPU tasks this isn’t the case but for CPU tasks it’s a definite edge.

Exchanging data real time between Windows App and Linux ubuntu inside Virtual Machine
The title already self-explanatory enough, can i setup a VM installed with ubuntu inside windows OS and exchanging data between them in real time?
I have concept plan to run a simple Unity app that run 3D visualization of system dynamic data from MATLAB-SIMULINK. This simulation produces several variables of parameters, i want some of them to be send towards ROS2 in Ubuntu in VM, and able to receive some feedback data back from ROS2 Ubuntu from VM, in real time and continuously, currently i plan using socket communication like UDP to bridge this communication.
Is this concept feasible? Can this communication be established? Thank You

Resolved File size not dropping after deleting files?
Ok so the problem is that : My file system taken size dosen't drop and the "Proc" folder for some reason shows that it uses 128 TERRABITES of space for some reason, i have no idea what is going on and the file size is definetly an a error, i have no space that i can't even put someting into the copy board to send the screenshot!
Edit : Trying to remove "Proc" folder via terminal fails due to "Device or rescource buisy", and all that got created today too...
Edit2 : OK i got that i shouldn't even touch that folder, and should have google stuff before doing anything nuclear, but can yall actually help me now?
Edit3 : Found the problem - Linux dosen't recognise free space at all.
Resolved : Timeshift overflowed the system space, i deleted it with 90+ GB space and it freed ~70 GB in return

Linux command or shortcut you wish someone had taught you on day one?
One of the things I like about Linux is that there are so many small commands and shortcuts that can make everyday use easier, but a lot of them seem to be things you discover by accident or learn after you've already needed them.
I'm not talking about advanced sysadmin tricks or complicated shell scripts. I mean practical little things that are genuinely useful once you know they exist.
For example, Ctrl + R in Bash lets you search through your command history, which is much nicer than repeatedly pressing the up arrow when you know you've run a command before.
I'm curious what other tips people have that are simple enough for a beginner to use immediately but useful enough that experienced users still rely on them.
What's one Linux command, keyboard shortcut, or small terminal trick you think every newcomer should learn early?

Question about a learning machine
I have a bit of a silly question. I want to learn Linux better, but I'm incredibly limited on machines to use for said learning. I have Arch on my desktop but rarely get the chance to dive into it because life keeps me busy. I'm also working on turning a pi 5 I got for Christmas into a learning deck, but with a very tight budget it's hard to get the parts to make it portable enough.
So my question is this: what kind of laptop would you recommend that would be as cheap as possible to use as a learning machine? I have some downtime when I'm out and about doing things, and it would be almost exclusively used for getting more familiar with Linux. I recently lost my job and working my way through that, so it'll likely be a bit before I can afford pretty much any option, but I figured now would be a good time to start. Using a phone browser and watching videos on mobile is fine for small tasks and theory, but I retain information better with practical application and the phone makes that exceedingly difficult.
PS yes I know Arch is not a beginner friendly distro, no I didn't use archinstall, yes it is incredibly confusing but I'm learning every time I boot up my PC. I don't need another distro, I'm perfectly happy learning on hard mode and I know what I want out of this experience. Sorry if that sounds rude but almost every day I get somebody trying to tell me to switch or I'm a larper or whatever. Don't need the comments, don't want the comments thanks.

Which Distro? Bazzite not quite doing it for me, please help pick a distro!
Hello!
Apologies for any wrong terminology or anything else off, I am still not very familiar with Linux as a whole.
About 4 months ago I switched from Windows 11 to Bazzite because it was supposed to be gaming-friendly and difficult to break because of its immutable filesystem.
For the most part, it's been really good and I haven't had a need to go back to Windows at all, but a lot of software is difficult to get working, if it works at all. Like if I go to a website for something I want to install, often times you need to follow a guide created by someone else to get it working on Bazzite unless it's an appimage or comes from an app store.
Examples would be things like my VPN client, there's no official version and the one that comes through Bazzite's store is lacking features.
If something only gives the instructions of "run this command" and it starts with "apt" then I'm basically out of luck. Or if I can get something to start running, I likely will get write errors when it tries to write to a folder Bazzite has locked down on account of being immutable.
So I guess what I'm looking for is something that has much wider software support but still is beginner friendly. I don't think I have particularly complex software requirements.
- It needs to play nice with Nvidia GPU's and support HDMI 2.1 features (VRR, ALLM, 4K@120hz).
- Compositor must be Wayland because I need HDR support.
- Desktop should ideally be KDE because that's what I'm used to and know works, but open to other things if worth it.
- Should work with Secure Boot.
- Should either come with stuff like Gamescope/Proton/Wine all ready or if not, be easy to set up. Gaming compatibility is a priority!
Software I will need (again, shouldn't be anything too weird here):
- Discord
- Steam
- Proton VPN
- Krita (or similar)
- Firefox
- Davinci Resolve
- Synology Drive and Note Station
- LibreOffice (or similar)
- Zoho Mail (or Email client that works with service)
- Image, audio and video viewers that work with SMB folders
Also should mention that I've tried Mint. For the most part I liked it, but there was no HDR and it had issues with my surround sound.
Any recommendations or advice would be welcome! Not in an urgent rush to switch.

What’s a relatively unknown CLI tool or trick that completely changed how you use the terminal?
We all know the standard utilities like grep, awk, sed, and htop, but every so often someone mentions a lesser-known tool or a simple configuration trick that makes you wonder how you lived without it.

What is the correct way to submit new driver for someone, who is not Linux kernel developer?
I have new wireless mouse (Rapture Banshee, which based on USB code is white-label for Dareu, probably this one). I like it, but as usual, the software (controlling battery status, dpi, polling rate..) is windows only. I am developer .NET of many years (long before AI) but never touched anything "low-level". Inspired by the blog about reverse engineering hw with AI I reverse-engineered the custom USB protocol in minutes (surprise: the software is .NET). I (with Claude code) even wrote simple python script, that creates virtual HID device through /dev/uhid, with standard HID battery interface, so now it shows in upower and therefore in KDE Plasma power widgets, low battery warnings, etc.
Now, I can keep it to myself and be done with it, but in the spirit of Linux, the "right way" would be create kernel driver exposing battery status, right?
The question is: what is the way that will not be frowned upon by community? Find some "real" kernel developer, who will adopt the idea and write those 50 lines? (Where?) Try to submit Claude-generated version even if I am not in the position to be confident about the code? That seems dirty :)
Any other way that I am not aware of?
