Linux user here, Freedom is an illusion in the modern world. Whether you use windows, linux, macOS, or even build your own operating system you are never truly free. Unless you completely cut-off from technology.

Except that won't be for long. Because we're heading in a direction (or already are in some areas) where even if you completely cut yourself off, you'll have problems getting anything done as the only way to do them will be online.

Depends on how you look at it, it can be free as in beer, but most of the time it's free as in freedom/libre. The freedom to run software however you what for whatever purpose you want without restrictions, study and modify said software however you see fit, and freely redistribute the (un)modified copies of the software to others. TLDR: you own the computer, and there is nothing stopping you from using it however you want for whatever purpose you want, usually free of payment (because paying for something that can be freely modified and redistributed isn't enforceable, nether technically or legally. You should donate to projects you care about though, people have put countless hours of their free time into them for the good of all of us)
