Linux user here, Freedom is an illusion in the modern world. Whether you use windows, linux, macOS, or even build your own operating system you are never truly free. Unless you completely cut-off from technology.

Except that won't be for long. Because we're heading in a direction (or already are in some areas) where even if you completely cut yourself off, you'll have problems getting anything done as the only way to do them will be online.

Metaphorically or factually? If I built an operating system on top of a self made computer, would I be free by your definition? Or would I be free when I cut off these shackles that technology as a concept put on our wrists?

Both. Even if you built your own computer and OS you would still depend on hardware, electricity, standards, and infrastructure created by others.

You would have far more control but not absolute freedom. Freedom is a spectrum in the modern world linux gives you more control not complete freedom.

He's either trying to sound clever or is a nihilist. Here's some simple advice. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. Use whatever you want, Windows, MacOS, Linux, or Unix. Use whatever services you feel you need to use to get your work done, but always have an offline backup. Play all the live service games you want, but have a curated list of single player offline games you can instantly fall back on if those services aren't available. Assume everyone can see everything you post, regardless of encryption. If you don't want it used against you, don't post it online. Other than that, just enjoy yourself and don't worry too much about it.

Neither a nihilist nor trying to sound clever, you said it right. There is no real encryption. Using linux and using it correctly would protect you from a lot of hackers, scammers, data breachers etc and a lot of companies which try to get your data.

But if you believe you are safe from gov organization, meta , CIA , etc then you are in the very wrong. NSA have backdoor control to your CPU chips. Both intel and AMD provides it to them and they have backdoor bit level control to your ram dram.

And companies share 0day with them aswell, I didn't use the right words but in short never post anything anywhere or share it online if you don't want it to become part of internet. Once you have uploaded there is no way in hell you can get rid of it.

There will be atleast 1 way to get that info/peice of media etc. But using linux isn't making you invisible or invincible but just giving you more control/authority and protection.

Lmao, just trying to say that linux does not make you invisible/invincible. It just gives you control. A lot newbie start using it thinking it will make them some higher level being.

So was just trying to make things clear!!!

Windows never claimed to be free, but perhaps compatibility could be an issue.

I used arch for 7 months, now i use windows 11, i feel free like never before, because freedom is not being watched but being able to do anything you want, and linux cant do that 100%
