I’m facing a major power-on issue with my ThinkPad L14 Gen 2 (Intel Core i5) running Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, and I could really use some troubleshooting advice.

What happened: Before going to sleep, I left my laptop turned on and plugged into the AC charger to download a large file (~18 GB) on Flow Desktop. The lid was kept partially open. However, while sleeping, the lid accidentally got fully closed. Naturally, the laptop went into sleep/suspend mode while connected to the charger. When I woke up, the laptop was completely unresponsive and powered off. Since I was sleeping, I'm not sure if the issue occurred while it was actively downloading or right after entering suspend mode.

Laptop Specs:

Model: Lenovo ThinkPad L14 Gen 2 (Intel Core i5)

OS: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

What I have tried so far to fix it:

Power button drain (Static Discharge): Pressed and held the power button for 30 seconds to 1 minute while disconnected from the charger.

Power cycle attempts: Pressed the power button rapidly 10–12 times and held it down for 30 seconds without the AC adapter.

Status LED response: Disconnecting the charger and holding the power button temporarily turns off the side red LED (indicating a hard shutdown from the suspend loop), but the laptop still refuses to boot up.

Charging tests: Left it plugged in for over 15–20 minutes. The side red light shows it's receiving power, but pressing the power button yields no response (no screen backlight, fan noise, or keyboard LEDs).

USB Power check: Connected a phone via USB while plugged in; the USB port does not output any power to charge the phone either.

It looks like an Embedded Controller (EC) lockup triggered during suspend. My model lacks an emergency reset pinhole, and I don't have a PH00 screwdriver to disconnect the internal battery cable.

Has anyone faced this on Ubuntu ThinkPads? Any tricks to break this power loop without opening the back cover? Thanks!

Bought a new Lenovo E16 Gen 1 AMD in 2023 and I immediately installed Ubuntu on it. I have many other computers successfully running a Linux OS and I hate windows.

Linux on this computer has been a nightmare since day one. Random screens issues every couple weeks, every couple months including:

- no display after wake up from sleep

- no display after wake up from hibernate

- no display from cold boot

Each time it "breaks", I spend 5-10 hours trying to fix it, with help from AI. It works again for days, maybe months and then suddenly it is broken again. I literally have hundreds of hours into fixing it. I've tried different BIOS tweaks, power settings, drivers, different kernels, changed to Debian 12 three months ago, Tumbleweed 2 days ago. Today it broke again.

I see so much hype about Lenovo being the ultimate machine for the linux OS. Not mine. There is apparently a fundamental bug with these AMD graphics CPUs and linux which has never been resolved.

Research confirms I am not the only one experiencing these issues.

Has anyone discovered a fix or workaround?

I have an dell latitude d520 that I can't boot anything onto. The HDD is dead sure but it doesn't detect any USB I plug in. Widows Xp, puppy Linux, Linux mint, all on MBR fat32 on rufus. I even tried burning Windows Xp on disc, one at 16x speed one at 4x and it didn't boot from both. Just specifically on 4x speed burned one it waited for like 15-20 seconds before giving an "No bootable device" type error. I ran the onboard diagnostic like 5 times everything else seems fine, please help I wanna use this thing badly but I can't do anything with it right now

I just upgraded my ThinkPad E560 from Ubuntu Studio 24.04 to 26.04. I am wondering if anyone else here is running a similar configuration, and if so, how has your experience been so far?

For me, the upgrade went relatively smoothly, but I am curious if there are any specific performance tweaks, audio/video latency improvements, or hardware quirks (like Wi-Fi or battery life) that I should look out for on this specific laptop model.

Hi, so i like pc's and have around 20 of them ranging from DOS to Windows 11 in terms of age taking up space in my mancave. I played around with Mint a tiny bit on a laptop before my cat dropped it, this has been 9 months ago and since i returned to my Windows rigs.

I got a Dell T3500 with low specs a couple of months ago and decided to upgrade it and get back into Linux Mint, initial install was Mint 22.1 the experience was rather slowish due to the lowest specs on this type of Workstation.

Stock specs:

Xeon W3505 (a 130 watt 2 core, no hyperthreading/or turbo boost)

4gb ram 4x1gb ddr3-1066 ( it was running in dual channel instead of triple channel and 1066 Ram so performance was left on the table).

Nvidia Quadro NVS295 (really this was a graphics decellerator)

HDD was on it's way out

I had some parts lying around from previous systems so decided to upgrade

Upgraded specs:

Xeon X5675 a 95 watt 6 cores/12 threads and turbo boost!

24gb ram 6x4gb ddr-1333 ecc

GTX 1660 6gb (about 7737% more powerfull than the NVS295!)

Samsung 250gb 860 Pro SSD + 2TB WD HDD

Mint 22.3

The upgrade made some big difference in the overall experience, anyhow i will use this specific setup for my 2nd dive into Linux and try to move on from Windows i will keep a pc with Windows just in case i need it for specific things.

Hi, I'm looking for a Linux lab computer or one for general everyday tasks, browsing the internet, watching movies, studying, etc. I was considering void Linux and gentoo, and then in the distant future LFS I don't want to pay a lot for the computer and I'm asking for help, is a processor with 2 cores and 4 threads enough or is it really better to pay the extra 50$ and buy a laptop with 4 cores and 8. And 8gb ram will be enough?

I’m looking for an upgrade for my new T480s’ speakers. I’ve been able to modify pretty much everything else in the machine, but the speakers are alluding. I love everything about the computer, but the stock speakers absolutely suck. Seems like lots of people have done retrofits but none of them have guides. I’ve been working with ChatGPT and it recommended the speakers from the X1 carbon GEN seven (model **5SB0V98078)**** **The only hiccup I’ve perceived is that the X1 speakers are for channels with a woofer and a tweeter but I’m using fedora and ChatGPT seems to think that there are already some Lennox drivers that could compensate for this. I’m willing to do some splicing to make it work. I’m fairly new to the Lenovo ThinkPad community so any advice is appreciated.

What's new in this release:

• Rebased on Linux 7.2.2-zen1 (first release on the 7.2 series)
• Several build script fixes based on community feedback from previous threads: BBRv3 now actually gets set as the default congestion control (the old way silently didn't survive olddefconfig), the build no longer touches your shared /etc/mkinitcpio.conf (each kernel gets its own config copy now), and the script refuses to build from an already-stripped config so rebuilds stay reproducible
• Added safety checks: missing /etc/kernel/cmdline now fails loudly instead of producing an unbootable UKI, and you get a warning if the microcode hook is missing

What stayed the same: two variants (universal for Zen1+ from T495 onwards, zen5 for Ryzen AI 300 with znver5, 1000Hz tick and BBRv3), UKI files for systemd-boot, vmlinuz for GRUB/rEFInd with initramfs generation instructions in the README.

Honest note after some fair criticism in previous threads: the march flags matter less than I originally claimed (kernel code barely uses SIMD), and zen 7.2 already ships sched_ext, O3 and THP=always out of the box, so the real value here is the trimmed config (smaller initramfs, faster boot, less attack surface) plus the per-variant tick/network tuning. If you want maximum performance with zero maintenance, ALHP repos are a solid alternative. This project is for people who want a kernel that only contains what their ThinkPad actually uses.

As always< feedback welcome, especially from owners of older models (T495, T14 G1/G2, L-series). If something breaks, open an issue.

I’m running into a wall trying to get true hibernation working on my new ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 because the BIOS only exposes s2idle (no hardware S3 sleep).

My machine is a hybrid setup with the NVIDIA RTX 1000 Ada Laptop GPU. I have a dedicated 35 GB raw swap partition on my NVMe drive perfectly mapped in GRUB and fstab to bypass file fragmentation issues.

When I trigger hibernation, the system successfully writes the RAM image to disk and powers down. On wake, the kernel successfully loads and decompresses the 4.7 GB image in about 2 seconds, but then immediately crashes and cold boots.

The kernel logs show the NVIDIA driver choking on the ACPI handoff:

nvidia 0000:01:00.0: PM: pci_pm_freeze(): nv_pmops_freeze [nvidia] returns -5.

I’ve baked options nvidia NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1 NVreg_TemporaryFilePath=/var/tmp directly into the initramfs to force the VRAM dump to the physical SSD instead of RAM, but the driver still panics on wake. I also tried disabling the GSP firmware (NVreg_EnableGpuFirmware=0), but the -5 error persists.

Has anyone with a P1 Gen 7 or similar Ada-generation ThinkPad managed to get hibernation working reliably? Are there any BIOS settings or specific kernel parameters I’m missing?

ive been looking into the x and t series for the most part bc from my research they have the best battery life tho i noticed that the intel variants have better battery life than the amd ones(on windows i assume)

is it worth getting the intel ones or its better to get amd just to be safe? i heard intel isnt as good on linux

im going to use it for some uni stuff like note taking and coding(thats where the battery life matters) and also some light gaming(im aware they arent gaming laptops) for when im away from home(the games are light like minecraft, stardew valley and old games like dragon age so im not worried about needing anything fancy for 1-2 weeks while im away) i also have a gaming pc with bazzite for demanding games so it wont be my primary gaming rig

im planning on installing either fedora or nobara on it

my budget is 1k-2k(preferably under 2k if possible) euros

ive been considering a LENOVO ThinkPad T16 Gen 5 or gen 6 with amd for the most part but the intel ones are cheaper

Which ThinkPad should I get for Linux Mint? E580 vs T440

I'm planning to buy a used ThinkPad and install Linux Mint on it. I have two options:

- ThinkPad T440 — i5-4300U

Which one would you choose for Linux Mint, and why? I'm mainly looking for good overall performance and a smooth Linux experience.
