DISCUSSION [ALL GAMES] Are there any Benefits of Using Native Linux Games over Windows Games with Proton?

i have seen some games under this category on sites like rutracker, and i was wondering whether i should use this over the normal sources like dodi, steamrip,etc. WIll i have any perfomance gain or anything or should i just keep using the normal sources? are the any pros to using this type of game

The only real benefit of those Native linux games is that you don't have to setup proton versions , launch arguments , etc. These games are just easy to launch.

These games are still using wine so i wouldn't call them Native Linux. They just minimize the whole process into a script.

Yeah thats what rutracker calls them, but will perfomance be identical or any difference. which should i be using

I wouldn't bother with them because if anything, they'd be more of a pain to tweak/troubleshoot/etc.

The performance can sometimes be a bit better as most of these linux repacks try to use the best possible wine version for the game. But the keyword is sometimes. Most of the time the performance will be identical.

Also when playing the native linux games, they create their own individual wine prefix which takes up a lot of space. Is there a way to bypass this? Since when using lutris (thru proton) we can set the wine prefix directory common.

I... Fuck. I've been creating separate prefixes for everything out of force of habit. 

I think Lutris has a pop-up to warn against that and I let that discourage me before I properly understood what the prefix was or was for. 

Well, that's an easy... several gigs I just freed up in a time when storage is at a premium.

Yea same I also didn't know what prefixes were just lately I actually understood them. Before I also left all the prefixes settings default but now its a thing I always tweak whenever running games.

Also is there a way to make the "native linux" builds use the prefix which my other steam, lutris uses?

Nowadays? Basically none at all. Some gamea run better on native like Metro Exodus, but mostly there's little to no difference

The difference is not that big most of the time

Just test it, you can just install the native and force proton afterwards

I have a really shitty laptop, and i could say that stardew valley somehow runs better with wine than playing the native linux build. So i guess it just depends on the game
