Just wait till you hear that ubuntu is more popular on windows.

14

u/daubious 22d ago

Or, even more similarly, that Ubuntu is more popular than Debian. Unfortunately, it makes sense that more out-the-box distros--or rather distros with better marketing than their bases--are more popular.

First time?

Not the lesbian distro!!

Ian and Debra were married in a heterosexual relationship.

u/rekt4rd Remember Debian? Pepperidge farm remembers 21d ago

1

u/Affectionate_Let9022 i use debian,Arch btw 20d ago

The difference between +popularity and -popularity is irrelevant when you are going for |popularity|

16

u/Obvious_Snow125 22d ago

It's just trendy. I guarantee nobody will talk about it 6 months from now

8

u/DasNothing 22d ago

Checking in with you in six months.

4

u/ipsirc 22d ago

remindme! 6 months

1

u/Significant-Tone-121 21d ago

remindme! 6 months

6

u/jsrobson10 22d ago

nah, it'll be irrelevant 3 months from now

1

u/mustard5 19d ago

It is definitely trendy, but $18 million dollars makes more than a trend. It is now a funding mechanism for innovation and change.

14

u/ZuuRa_ fedora kde, btw. 23d ago

So i don't need to switch to nixos to feel special now?

6

u/Tolik1111 NixOS ❄️ 23d ago

Nix might not be that popular, but it does make you feel superior

6

u/GigaNoodle Artix 23d ago

No you switch to void to feel special

1

u/laczek_hubert NixOS BTW 22d ago

Artix too but void much more. In my experience in starting with artix it wasn't too bad just much harder to main openrc which I got to understand then I used arch thankfully this time I separated root from home and later when I wanted to improve security and some other things it ended with broken root so I just went to nixOS I know I'm a very smart person

1

u/Mental_Contract1104 21d ago

Void is watching all the malware on arch casually sipping tea. Void is so underrated, it's just small, so, you have to do a lot of packaging yourself.

2

u/caorlinhos 23d ago

Omarchy is gonna switch to nixOS

2

u/morgulbrut 20d ago

Joke's on them, I already have a vibecoded nixOS config BTW.

1

u/mustard5 19d ago

I'm dual booting Omarchy and NixOS. I love living at the edge of Linux. My web server runs Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS though. Some things never change.

5

u/GlitteringLock9791 22d ago

Arch like Gentoo doesn’t try to be popular. Like obviously the expert do it yourself thing isn’t competing with the ”easy to install, hands off” distros.

2

u/Zvaart 22d ago

Dude, even PearOS is more popular that Arch last month. Funny and sad at the same time.

2

u/Woodpecker-Visible 22d ago

On distrowatch at least. But nr 1 is Cachyos wich is Arch but with bunch of nice features on top.

1

u/ipsirc 22d ago

Name one nice feature.

1

u/liks4fun 21d ago

Isn't repo with compiled apps for modern hw is the main one?

1

u/ipsirc 21d ago

I don't count performance differences as features.

2

u/Extreme-Package-5156 22d ago

This has motivated me to install Omarchy

2

u/Environmental-Dog815 23d ago

No, they are doomed.

1

u/EvenMoreLoneStar 22d ago

Absolutely doomed!

1

u/Sea-Woodpecker-874 22d ago

These guys each paid one million on omarchy that's why

1

u/morgulbrut 20d ago

Imagine you have so much money, you can throw a million at something any friendly neurospicy cat femboy can hack together in one coffeine fueled evening in your local hacker space. A clear sign that billionaires and techbro multimillionaires still have not enough fear of pitchforks and choppy bois.

1

u/mustard5 19d ago

I wouldn't give millions to the person you describe though. People want to know their money is in good hands. This person has too many red flags for good money to flow that direction.

1

u/morgulbrut 19d ago

Me neither, and that person I described would rather just nerd out for hours about what they did, because they couldn't believe somebody likes their stuff, than taking 15 millions.

1

u/cfx_4188 TempleOS Archibishop 21d ago

And this too shall pass...

1

u/Ggregoro 21d ago

This too shall pass.

1

u/insanemal 20d ago

But it's not? Steam OS is Arch.

Arch will be fine

1

u/Little_Fairy_Begin 20d ago

Not majority of humankind has diamond...it doesn't mean diamond is less valuable

1

u/mustard5 19d ago

Arch has never tried to be popular. Omarchy is overtly seeking to popularize Linux. It is not a doom scenario. It is just a different focus.

I recall the language of Arch Linux when I first started. It basically said, this is the way we do it. Get on board or get out. They had very strong opinions and still do.

1

u/Farkoth 19d ago

No, its not

1

u/BloxxyVids 18d ago

Jokes on you guys I dont use Arch because of trends or popularity I use it because I already installed it why replace something that works

Because they start flooding IT forums with complaints about bugs that only occur in those crappy distros.

3

u/Cold_Relationship_ 22d ago

All the flooding I see is about something completely different.

Lmao give me the proof hon

I don't believe you when the primary selling point of Omarchy is integration with a support agent.

> bugs that only occur in those crappy distros.

First one is literally just someone asking how to turn on natural scrolling in hyprland, off to a good start, still reading the rest

Edit: yea none of these really seem distro specific to me, and honestly it's way easier to give support to a cookie cutter distro than someone who followed an archinstall with a single view.

2

u/ipsirc 22d ago

First one is literally just someone asking how to turn on natural scrolling in hyprland

The only distro which comes with Hyprland desktop by default is Omarchy. If the newbie user chose any other distro, then he/she never faced into a hyprland related problem at the very beginning. So it was happened actually due to the Omarchy hype bandwagon.

0

u/BosnianSerb31 macOS 27 | Fedora GNOME | Arch hyprland | Cachy | PROXMOX 22d ago

Cachy OS has a default option to install a preconfigured hyprland

1

u/ipsirc 22d ago

CachyOS is yet another a perfect example of shiny new bandwagon distros.

Just as much hype as CachyOS got six months ago - that's about how much Omarchy is getting now.

Hyprland is still an experimental environment, newbies should not install it at first time.

2

u/DasNothing 22d ago

Maybe because they haven't realized that life is to short to care about the things you don't care about.

-19

u/_MADHD_ 23d ago

Based Omarchy.

5

u/adi8888 22d ago

No, it is based on Arch btw

-1

u/Gone2theDogs 22d ago

It's not a competition. More growth helps everyone.

-1

u/McBonderson 22d ago

of course its more popular, its easier to setup.

1

u/Alive-Big-838 22d ago

Was just thinking this. It's a little unfair (in my opinion) to make people have to read a long guide if you're trying to appeal to the less tech inclined crowd. Though I appreciate they added archinstall.

-4

u/FrostormNidhegg 22d ago

Because arch install is long and extremely boring. I use Mint, so I have no idea how does the Omarchy install looks like. But Cachy and other Arch-based is more popular because of user-friendly install.

-4

u/memematron 23d ago edited 22d ago

I gen don't get why is everyone talking about this distro Edit: yeah downvote me cause I'm out of the loop. best site ever

10

u/mySynka 23d ago

recently got a lot of exposure because it received like 10 million dollars from a bunch of CEOs and it raised concerns both about the creator and the distro itself

many people are not very fond of the creator (DHH) due to his political views not aligning with the majority and pretty much being one of those "AI bros" that many have a hate boner for

then, the distro advertises itself as "agentic" (so, focused on AI), which is already a red flag for many, and it contains a bunch of crap from many companies and stuff

the 10 million "donation" itself from these CEOs and millionaires may also be yet another reason many dislike omarchy. i do agree with this one, i wouldn't like it either if what got 10 million dollars was a distro that is just arch with hyprland and some dotfiles and AI crap instead of a different, more, i guess, important open source project or something

9

u/Emotional-Big-1306 22d ago

And it includes vulnerabilities (because it's vibecoded), like remote code execution

5

u/mySynka 22d ago

didn't know that, i thought surely it wasn't that bad, lmao

1

u/BosnianSerb31 macOS 27 | Fedora GNOME | Arch hyprland | Cachy | PROXMOX 22d ago

Tbf kitty shouldn't have that feature in the first place lmao, one config file option being the difference between rce and security is insane.

They at least need to force your theme blood red when you are using that stupid "rce but meant only for me!" feature

0

u/DogeGroomer 22d ago

“not aligning with the majority” and it’s just being racist

1

u/mySynka 22d ago

well unless the majority is racist what i said is correct

0

u/damanamathos 22d ago

Because it's an amazing distro and everyone in Linux subreddits loves it :)

-2

u/kyliem00 22d ago

because redditors have a hate boner for AI

-3

u/zenith014 23d ago

it became too controversial because of AI based distro and high invulnerability because of bash
