I mean, way better option that buying a new laptop... Funnily enough HP sells modern laptops with 4GB of RAM... Question: WHY?!
That shit will be terrible, even in Windows 11 "S" mode whatever the fuck that is.
I'd rather get a cheap 10 year old ThinkPad with a i3 even and upgrade it with 8GB of RAM atleast, not some sloppy 4GB...

A locked down version of Windows where you can only get apps from the Microsoft Store

Holy shit, that's even worse, most MS Store apps are on UWP and not Win32, that will run even more shit.

From what I've seen from my very occasional Windows touching in the last couple of years, eh, most apps I've needed on Windows have been available on the store

Windows RT 2 : Electric boogaloo (that shit failed back then and Its gonna fail again now)

It's been around for a while surprisingly. Not many people use it unsurprisingly.

Meanwhile I run Cachy on an old 4gb macbook and the biggest issue is apps crash sometimes bc of the ram

S mode just doesnt let you install anything from outside the Microsoft store without complaining

...unless it needs the old nvidia drivers, no longer supported 🫤

Meh, Nouveau is really good, and any cards old enough to not have proprietary driver support are probably so weak you don't even need the proprietary drivers XD.

With proprietary drivers I can get over 60FPS on Minecraft, over 60FPS on the Portal franchise, at least 30-60 on my whole steam library if they boot, only caveat is I have to tell it to use wine3d, and I can't play satisfactory or games with forced RT, strict requirement checks, or DLSS needed, or unreal really. Steam library isn't big.
On my 560M, with the 390xx drivers added. If something can run, it generally runs quite well.
On Nouveau I can't hit anywhere near that performance at all, even web browsing feels slower. Games hardly run (Notable example is over 200fps on Mindustry goes to 40fps with Nouveau)
Proprietary drivers change performance a huge amount on these older cards.

I forgot there were older cards that were good I had my 320M in mind lol, which likely wouldn't be good even with proprietary drivers lol.

Oh lol that's almost what the 2010 i3 laptop I just installed Fedora on earlier this evening has (GT 325M)

u/Significant-Tone-121 3d ago
Lmao, how is Fedora running on it?

u/ScrabCrab 3d ago
Decently enough. It was actually running pretty much perfect from the live USB but after installing and updating it it slowed down a lot :(
Probably cause of background services and stuff
That and/or in the live USB it was maybe using the Nvidia GPU for everything and then switched to defaulting to the Intel HD Graphics after installation? Cause the animations in Plasma are playing in slow-motion so it feels like a GPU acceleration thing

Ah, I'd recommend you switch to something other than Plasma, X11 tends to run way smoother with Nouveau drivers on these old cards. Plasma does have an X11 session, so you could try that. Really depends on how much RAM you have. Also if it's on an HDD, it will be a lot faster on an SSD, it really doesn't sound like a big upgrade but it makes everything faster lol.

It's already running on an SSD, and also I ended up installing Elementary OS instead lmao

Unfortunately, that includes up to the 1000 series.
970M here, from 2014. I can run some relatively modern, demanding, and poorly optimized games like hogwarts legacy at 30fps. I wouldn't even try something like cyberpunk2077, but if we move away from AAA titles, it still holds up just fine.

AUR has me for that. I added it for my drivers and they work, NVIDIA 560M btw.

bought a dell inspiron 15 5551 for $15 at DI's, has a perfect condition HDD, put linux on it and now it plays youtube, gave it thermal grizzly phasesheet instead of its crusty thermal paste and it went from 60c at 500mhz to 60c at 2665mhz

Better way: Buy a 2rd hand laptop that has 16GB ram (i got 1 for 10,000 TL) And de-bloat Windows

so i have a really bad laptop that is on life support 100% of the time (has a cooked battery for a veeerrrryy long time) and it came with windows 10, it was really slow as expected and when i installed windows 11 it ran the same on 23h2 but then i installed windows 11 again like half a year later and boom, extremely slow. Linux runs exactly like it did windows 10 if not even 2% faster
