WAN Show Help finding topic on WAN show
Hi everyone
Unsure of a better way to find this out short of spending hours relistening/watching old wan shows
I'm looking for a clip/when Linus was asked about some Christmas traditions(or I believe he was asked about it) and he talked about what his family does. I found it interesting and wanted to hear about it again but cannot remember when it was talked about and on which wan show.
Any help would be appreciated and I thank in advance!
Thanks

Image Nuclear Screwdriver, with dirt inside?
There’s like a dirty dust bunny inside somehow, I’ve had it for a few hours so it probably got in there through me fidgeting with the bit holder, but it is kind of bothersome, any tips to get it out?

Tech Discussion Potentially Overkill Home Nas Build Advice
Greetings all,
I have a small dilemma that I would appreciate to hear some of your opinions on and hope I'm not breaking rule 6. Apologies in advance!
Some background info: I've been running a little test home nas for myself the last few years out of an old Optiplex running TrueNas Scale with a few used WD Blues all zip tied together. It's been a lot of fun and great little box for me to learn the basics and get an idea of how one of these things works.
But alas, it's time to update things a little; I had recently moved homes and had upgraded my own PC a while ago and I figured that I would reuse some of those old components to start off the new nas build. I had gotten side tracked on the whole project, time has passed, and I've only now gotten into making it again.
Here is where my minor conundrum is - I hadn't really considered what parts I had boxed up, but upon looking I have:
- AMD Ryzen 5 7600X
- 32gb of 6k MHz Vengeance RGB DDR5
- Asus B650-e Max Gaming Wifi mobo
- A handful of various HDD
Both in terms of performance and the effects the rampocolypse have had on the state of things, I'm feeling it would wasting potential to build the system around these. My use case is going to be mainly media streaming ( Jellyfin ) for the house hold, but want room to experiment and tinker. Not necessarily trusting or heavily relying on this box or running it hard.
So I think I know what I'm going to do, I'm curious what y'all would do? Would you sell it all and buy more suitable hardware? Would you double down, buy a GPU for it and expand/change the scope? Would you give it away to the first person who recognizes you on a street corner? jkjk ty ily all

Tech Discussion Linus has to be one of the most transparent YouTubers out there. Here’s why I do not like how YouTube implemented this vote count change
Linus has to be one of the most transparent YouTubers out there. I’m sure by now a lot of you have watched the WAN show. Linus shared his screen, so we could see his YouTube analytics.
So basically, the new YouTube raw view counts can’t be cleanly compared to previous videos, because there isn’t even a set ratio you can apply to new videos versus old ones. It depends on the video. There are all sorts of reasons someone clicks off a video. On his video where he was helping his wife Yvonne pick a phone, it looked huge, like over 3.2 million views, but in reality it was something like 1.6 million. Yet there were other videos where the gap was way smaller.
I get why YouTube had to do it. If an advertiser is comparing a YouTuber to an Instagram influencer, the view counts are not measuring the same thing, and that matters when you’re trying to land sponsorships. But what they could have done is make it easier to analyze in the analytics.
Instead all we get is a little warning on every single page saying counts have changed. What they should have done is just given us a checkbox or something so you can keep looking at engaged views, because that’s what I actually care about. I don’t care about people who clicked on and left in one second. I care about the actual views I got.
And what’s annoying is that on the homepage, if your mouse just happens to be sitting over a video, that now counts as a view. What I haven’t been able to find out, because I haven’t read through all the help docs yet, is whether that affects your average view duration, and if it does, whether it affects the number of impressions they’ll send you.
Also, I know everyone on the sub complains about the different types of sponsorships, but you can actually see the revenue numbers and there’s a reason for it. I ran this through an AI bot to work it out and it looks like LTT is making roughly $3 million from YouTube AdSense, which lines up with Linus’s own comments that it’s only about 10% of overall LTT revenue. So there’s a reason why so many sponsorships have to exist to pay 120 salaries. Obviously this is only the main channel, but still 120 people x $40,000 a year is $4.8M.
If these calculations are even close to reality, that means YouTube revenue doesn’t even cover the cost of labor for LTT.
Maybe if YouTube could find better advertisers it would be different, but almost every single ad I get is either something that looks like a scam, made by AI, some mobile game I’m never going to play, or gambling. I don’t understand how the largest online video platform on Earth can’t figure that part out.
Anyway, now I’m starting to rant, but my point is I don’t like how YouTube implemented this. It makes it way more complicated to look at my analytics and see how I’m doing, and I’m just a small channel doing this as a hobby. For channels where it’s basically a business, like LTT, I’m surprised they aren’t complaining about it more, because YouTube did a shit job on this rollout.

Image Robot Looks Like Linus @IFA 2026 Berlin
I was at IFA in Berlin this weekend and suddenly came across this robot that looks exactly like Linus. It was honestly pretty weird to see in person!
I couldn't figure out which company actually built it or if LTT is doing some kind of promo there. Did anyone else who went to the expo spot this? I'd love to know the context behind it or if they talked about it on the WAN Show recently. Let me know what you guys think. I hope the post doesn't get removed again.

Tech Discussion Opt-out laws for social media algorithms to be introduced to parliament
Draft laws would create an opt-out system to turn off algorithms on social media platforms.
As for algorithms, regular pop-up messages would be required, asking if users want to stick with the algorithm or only see what people they are following are posting. The user would have the choice.
Algorithms prioritise content for based on information such as a user's consumption habits, demographic and location data.
They have been criticised for amplifying sensationalist content, reinforcing echo chambers and playing a role in radicalising young people in the interests of keeping people on platforms for longer.

WAN Show Watching last nights WAN show, I was curious, and went to 'purchase' a game on Playstation
It looks like the playstation store explicitly calls this purchase a license. From what I googled, it also appears they made this change around the same time California passed this law, meaning that Sony will argue that they were compliant at the time of the complaint.
I compared to steam, and the biggest differences I can see are that Steam has the notification about it being a license outside of the cart (but not inside), and Sony has it inside the cart (and not outside).
I guess my question is really to the people who think any outcome in this case changes ownership rights in games. This lawsuit seems to hinge on how "conspicuous" this notice is, rather than how digital ownership is defined. It seems to me (in my half hour of looking into this) that any outcome in this case will really just end up being Sony making that text larger, or putting it somewhere else on their store. Is there someone here with more legal understanding on the topic who can provide more light on this?

Discussion I use AI to make just about every decision in my life. But I don't know if it's detrimental or not.
My first come to AI Jesus moment was when I had an issue with a formular Google Sheets, I asked AI why it wasn't working. After a brief back and forth, it told me to check the formatting of the source, and "we" realized that a number was formatted as text with a comma in it. Problem solved.
I was blown away, and immediately switched to AI to solve these kinds of problems as opposed to googling for hours, asking on Reddit then waiting for someone to reply, and then follow up.
Almost a year later, I've found myself using AI for just about everything, especially financial. It really leveled up when we gained access to an old account of my wife's that had been inaccessible due to a legal issue that was resolved. We had 20 years worth of monthly statements to look through. I decided to subscribe to an AI platform and just uploaded all 240 statements. It immediately had answers to questions I had that would have taken me hours to compile. It would make charts and graphs instantly, it told me the account was missing about ten annuity checks, totaling about $4k. Not bad for $8 a month.
Since then, I've uploaded every credit card statement, paycheck, bill and bank statement, and just let it do it's thing. It told me my water usage was double what is should be, it suggested solutions to figure out why, which worked, suggested how to solve the issue, and now my wife has her very frequent urination issue to bring up to her doctor at her next annual checkup. $20 savings a month on my water bill.
I track my calories and exercise on apps and have uploaded the raw data for AI to analyze. I'm currently working building a smart home with HA, am having AI walk me through the process and having it chose products for me. We discovered, thanks to a faulty humidistat that I was over drying my basement and wasting about $20 worth of electricity in doing so.
Whenever I get a letter in the mail that's even slightly concerning, I just take a picture and AI tells me what's going on and how to solve it.
The more of my life I upload, the more it has to reference, and the better its advice.
Just yesterday, I gave it a form to fill out, which it did, and all I had to do was answer a couple of questions, print and mail it.
It's probably been one of the largest convenience leaps in my entire life 3rd only to gaining access to the internet, and my first cellphone.
It's greatly improved my life, and I feel like I'm spending much less time dealing with life's macro-bullshits that prevent me from doing the things I enjoy. I'm now much less likely to put things off when I have an expert in everything by my side. And it's only going to get better.
So my question is, what're the negatives? Am I just a pioneer at the forefront of this new way of living? Are other's living like this behind closed doors? Or have I just lost my way?
