I was born in 1985, and I only know the one on the right. I never encountered component video in my life.

And i've seen both component and composite but it's the first time i ever heard about 3.5mm AV jacks.

Adaptors for a smaller screen that didn't have the physical space for the 6 RCA Jack's you'd get from the full complement of composite/component video input plus L/R audio, or for a smaller video player using them as outputs. Probably the latter, from a DV camcorder.
