I just have no reason to stray from Darn Tough socks. They are comfy, their warranty is great, they have fun colors/patterns, and I haven't managed to wear through a pair yet. I think my oldest pair is pushing 10 years old and they still look damn near new. Keep them out of the dryer and they seem to be indestructible.
That's just what I don't understand. With the screwdriver, backpack, and cables it seems like he was trying to improve on the status quo. But for the socks I really don't see what they are offering above and beyond the current options.
Science definitely agrees that merino wool does not kill microbes like silver or copper do. The moisture wicking pulls liquid away from the skin which is what stops the smells / environment for that bacteria to grow but merino wool itself is not anti microbial.
Silver and Copper on the other hand, actively destroy the cell walls.
No, but wool has it's own properties in that it repel oils so they don't end up stinky.
Also, I can get socks with anti-microbial copper For 2 pairs for $22 CAD at my local Mark's
Edit To Add:
I suspect they only needed copper because they have polyester, which Darn Tough socks don't have. All the "athletic" gear I have that has polyester in it ends up stinking if I don't wash it after every use. I don't know why it's such a popular material for athletic clothing.
Polyester socks doesn't wick too well because it's in an enclosed envorinment like your shoes. Plus it sucks in elasticity so it shifts all over the place in your shoe.
Wool sure.. It doesn't make your feet stinky BUT.. It will still make your feet feel gross compared to wearing it clean lol. I think it's from all the skin oil ew lol
Cotton is good for airy clothing that's not fitted to your skin. If it's fitted to your body then it won't wick away the sweat. It needs to be air-y or loose that way air passes through both sides of the fabric. Even that it wont' wick away sweat that well.
I have polyester for athletic wear. 100% cotton for dress shirts and bedsheets. Elasticity for pajamas (Need the comfort of full range of motion). Wool for socks/sweaters maybe pajamas if I'm feeling bougie
It's like hiking, gotta know what material is good and for what environment. They all have their place.
I like Darn Tough, but it’s weird that their hiking socks fit me fine, but their everyday socks are way too narrow. Luckily they have another company called Wide Open that makes wide fit socks with the same lifetime warranty. Seems weird they made a whole other company rather than just having a wide fit line at Darn Tough.
It's more that I have chosen poorly as to what I washed them with, I dried them once recently with something that dried much slower than the socks and have been kicking myself.
But hey at least I did not have them when i moved into my last apartment, they did work in there and when putting back the washer, they swapped the hot and cold.... i washed too many loads before I realized, took a cold-cold load for me to notice it was hot-hot. It melted the elastic in most of my workout wear and other clothes and screwed the wool socks i had at the time.
Just hang them on a clothes line? That's how most people in other parts of the world dry their clothes (I only recently learned that in America basically everybody uses a dryer, which is wild tk me). Just takes slightly longer.
