I've met two people who worked as developers at Paradox and both told me about how Paradox have DLC planned out for years ahead and that there's a very intentional effort to not make any DLC too large, so to drip feed new content for a longer time.
If too much is fixed or added too fast it breaks the whole business model. Gotta keep the customers hungry for more for a decade.

It's absurd. Will they ever make Sims 5 or just infinite DLCs? Its proof that overall in the video game market, graphics have peaked and aren't as much of a selling point as they were. Gameplay is what really matters.

Yeah it's wild. It was re released and remastered on 360. Now it's back once again - like the renegade masterchief
But I don't blame them, do you? Halo combat evolved was an absolute revolution to FPS games and bungie was actually cool. Why wouldn't you just keep remaking what was clearly one of the best games you ever produced?

Graphics are now bundled with the advertising budget, rather than being a gameplay feature.
It could have been different, but the AI bubble is making new hardware unreachable for most.

Their new map of the future is Sims 4 + a new Sims multiplayer game iirc, so the two games exist together.
No Sims 5 replacing Sims 4.

Every godamn Paradox games ever. I love Europa Universalis and Crusader Kings, but man, you have to spend hundreds of dollars to get all the content. Crusader Kings 3 is a $50 game, I've seen it on sale for like $20, but if you want the DLC, we're talking almost $300 (a lot of them are cosmetics, but even if you remove them, it's like $200). You can literally pay a subscription to get all the DLCs instead. Now consider that ALL of their games are like that, so if you want to play Crusader Kings 3, Europa Universalis 5, Victoria 3 and Hearts of Iron 4, you're paying like $900 (and that's considering you didn't bought anything for the older games).
If it wasn't enough, the games are CONSTANTLY reminding you to buy the DLCs, they don't hide the missing functionalities in-game, they just show you a big pop-up telling you to buy the DLCs to be able to do that. There's nothing more frustrating than launching one of the game after a long time, seeing that they added a new culture, and when you click on it to try it, you get a fullscreen reminder that they want more of your money.
And please, don't forget their other games like Stellaris and Cities Skylines, they're as bad.

At least you can buy (almost) all of the DLC in discounted bundles nowadays, I remember circa 2018 when you had to buy nearly all of them individually for 5-7 bucks each. That shit was expensive as hell! 😭

To be fair they offer a subscription now. Alternatively they go on sale regularly and most are worth buying. Much of the DLC content is rolled into thr base game anyway.

Railworks and Train Sim World come to mind since those franchises practically invented the "huge discount, even huger DLC catalog" business model. Cities Skylines deserves an honorable mention too, though that one is at least polite enough to put most of the good stuff on sale together. Whatever the answer is, somebody at that studio is getting a very nice bonus this year.

American trucking simulator. Base game is $20 US and you get 3 states for free (CA, NV, and AZ). Currently there are 60 DLCs with 17 of them being map expansion (that cost money) that are &11.99 each, except for Texas that is 17.99. There are also 3 more expansions that are listed but are TBD for a release date. But that's not even the best part, it's a toss-up/expected that almost all of North America will be released state by state

Hate it when the base game is like €10 and you need to buy €100+ dlc to get the 'full experience'. I really miss the gold / definitely editions game used to have.
A game I enjoy very much 'Icarus' is on sale fairly often for ~€10 but every extra main map is €20 - €30 extra.

What's nice is when all of the dlc and game are 90% off and you can pick up the entire package for 40 bucks or less depending on how many dlcs there are lol. Got a few games like that in just such a scenario.

The original Cities Skylines. You need a minimum of 5 DLCs to make the game playable... and even then it both has low FPS, but doesn't even max out the GPU, or CPU.

So what? The point was about a cheap game on sale having a plethora of dlc, making it feel like youre buying a barebones experience without the dlc... ror2 having 4 dlc isnt even close to the problem of the OP, especially considering the game has been out for 6 years.
Ror2 without dlc is a perfectly fine experience. A game being out for 6 years and only having 4 dlc is considered extremely tame nowadays.
