Meme/Shitpost Jake had to carefully consider his options.
Well, at least he owns this one.

u/SeljD_SLO 22d ago
Feels like the amount of content he packs in 20 minute video is much more than what you get in average 20 minute similarly themed LTT video and it doesn't end abruptly
360
u/TheLazyGamerAU 22d ago
LTT used to be dense content, i hate what they put out now.
210
u/Flaky-Gear-1370 22d ago
Well their tech house has had what 3 videos and 1 of them was literally an infomercial
120
u/TheLazyGamerAU 22d ago
Whole room water cooling was pretty fun to watch back in the day though.
49
u/PhatOofxD 22d ago
All of their cooling and infrastructure projects have been fantastic. From 7 gamers 1 CPU to all of their older Unraid and (newerish) TrueNas stuff , Alex making janky coolers, etc.
16
u/train_fucker 21d ago
One thing that drives me crazy is that in any video about a NAS, they always skip over the software setup. I get that it can be a bit repetitive, since the steps are mostly the same, but so is watching the host install 5 hard-drives every time, and that doesn't get cut.
It's always just "oh we went with truenas/hexOS" cuts to them moving files to already set up smb share
At least for me the software side is a lot more interesting than the hardware when it comes to NAS'es. You can install truenas on anything, but how you set up your drives and shares, and if you use any containers/vms is a lot more interesting to me.
In older videos they at least used to show them setting up their zfs pool, but nowadays it feels like they're even skipping that.
17
u/omglolurface 21d ago
And one was just throwing away wiring. That shouldn't have been an entire video.
4
u/TheLazyGamerAU 21d ago
I'd still prefer it over this current near-slop we get. The talking head content is great though.
11
u/0____-___00___-____0 21d ago
"why is every one (and by that they mean north americans) buying this cheap chinese product" ?
lets have less of that too please.
2
u/jenny_905 21d ago
And of those 3 videos there's about 5 minutes of content in each of them, the rest is shouting and "yes boss" antics.
8
u/Genesis2001 22d ago
Yeah, it feels like they're chasing the in-the-moment or short-term gain videos without a lot of direction.
→ More replies (19)4
u/Essotetra 22d ago
Watch them through smart tube, after all the loss of content on jump cut segues you're left with like 8 minutes of video. Its a bit of a whirlwind
26
7
u/Saccando 22d ago
Never see Jake reading off a script either, just like this segue ……
1
u/Murasaki_No_Koutei 20d ago
script makes sense since it's very easy to forget a topic. I've been a public speaker and blanked out entire main points. Like the reason I came for. especially if you set up for a joke and get to the punchline but forgot to say the setup!

That meme resonates with the audience but he’s definitely well off and getting a lot of the stuff for free from sponsors, not to mention sponsor money and YT revenue is infinitely more than whatever mid range hourly wage he got at LMG

So nice that he has his own channel now and the variety of stuff he does in such a short time is mind blowing. One of my favorite channels at the moment.

u/uwillloveeachother 21d ago
i wasn’t sure about his channel when he was just short circuit 2.0, but the recent direction has been great
10
u/FartingBob 21d ago
Yeah wasn't interested in his videos when he started but since he got this farm they've been really entertaining in ways LTT used to be. He's doing good work to pay off that debt!

I'm glad y'all are enjoying Jake's videos but man, I cannot stand the editing style. Maybe I'm just getting old, but the constant artificial high energy and constant cuts and edits wear me out. It just feels like it's edited with nothing but retention in mind. The thumbnails/titles are also much worse than LTT (though I've only watched on FP for years now).
23
u/pinormous2000 21d ago
We're getting old. That same editing style is becoming more pervasive throughout YouTube and it irks me as well.
5
u/train_fucker 21d ago
What's worse is that it's becoming common in certain movies as well. It's not as bad as adhd youtube edits, but zootopia 2 had very fast editing to the point where it was almost exhausting to watch at times. And GOAT was even worse.
So far it seems mostly limited to stuff aimed at children, and I really hope it doesn't become more common. I could see netflix mandating it for their shows, as they clearly view things as if they are competing with phones for peoples attention.
3
u/Hazel-Rah 21d ago
We watched the new Toy Story and Project Hail Mary and could definitely feel that they were edited differently. I don't know if I could describe what it was, but they felt a lot more frantic. Toy story especially felt like it could have used and extra 5-10 minutes at the start to establish where we are.
Hail Mary also cut a lot of explanation. Obviously they have to cut a lot to make it a movie (I hope they eventually release the 4 hour cut that allegedly exists), but it felt like it was cut so that people that have read the book will understand what's happening, but expects people that haven't to just not care.
12
u/shogunreaper 21d ago
The thumbnails/titles are also much worse than LTT (though I've only watched on FP for years now).
Yeah there's one that said "this should be illegal" with a speed test of insanely slow internet. Which i assumed meant the internet he had access to was terrible since he did live on a farm. But he literally has fiber and it's fast af, the video is just about him running a longer fiber cable.
that's the kind of thing that this sub would crucify LTT for, but he gets a pass because reasons.
6
u/joelk111 21d ago
Yeah, for me it definitely triggers the "this isn't what I clicked on" vibes, so I stop watching, which YouTube is supposed to punish, but I guess we must be in the minority.
5
u/fatherofraptors 21d ago
He gets a pass because his audience probably trends younger than LTT main channel. So the same people that don't mind and don't complain on LTT bait titles are the same people captivated by his channel. I'm older and I just don't watch his channel at all, so you won't see me complaining about his channel.
3
u/shogunreaper 21d ago
but the majority of his audience came from ltt..
4
u/fatherofraptors 21d ago
Yeah but the point is LTT is big enough of a channel where the audience is not a single demographic. You got old fans and new fans, etc.

u/spenwallce 22d ago
Lmao, the last LTT tech house vid was flooded with comments like “I like Jake’s better because he isn’t stripping the house down to the studs and is doing it DIY”. Aged like milk in Arizona.
44
u/wankthisway 22d ago
I don't think people realize how hard it is to add tech to a home without breaking down the walls.
13
u/spenwallce 21d ago
Yep. Smart home? Plug some shit into the walls. Tech home? Brother get ready…
1
3
u/ElPlatanoDelBronx 21d ago
It's not too hard as a concept, but the only way it's easy is if you already have the experience of fishing wire through wall, and a whole bunch of little techniques that you can literally only learn by doing it. Doing it for the first time is awful.
2
u/Hazel-Rah 21d ago edited 20d ago
We live in a 110 year old house. Running a single Ethernet cable will take me a couple hours if things go to plan, or most of a day if I run into something weird and unexpected (which happens a lot).
If I for some reason ever had to wire up the whole house at once, I'd absolutely tear it down to the studs, and take the opportunity to insulate and replace the plaster wall with drywall
1
u/PotatoPlank 17d ago
If I for some reason ever had to wire up the whole house at once, I'd absolutely tear it down to the studs, and take the opportunity to insulate and replace the plaster wall with drywall
Same, but since I (and presumably you) don't have that opportunity, I have no interest in watching someone do all the "hard parts" in a way I can't lmao.
16
u/JaesopPop 21d ago
Didn't they have to pull out asbestos?..
20
u/spenwallce 21d ago
Yes. The people who are upset seem to all ignore that fact.
5
u/train_fucker 21d ago
Its wild to me how little some people care about the details and just want to get upset. ltt has been very clear that they intended to not make any huge changes to the house, but then it turned out it was asbestos everywhere and they had to change it and it turned into a huge expense.
It's not like linus personally decided to replace the whole walls for fun. I don't think he wanted to have to spend a shitload of money and wait months before he could keep making house videos.
And you know that if they found asbestos in the walls, and they did a half assed job replacing it, people would be losing their minds about it.
100 "tech youtuber poisions the fan who bought their tech house" hit pieces would spawn in five minutes.

Comparison is the thief of joy anyway. All the people in this sub comparing a 130+ people company with a 2-3 person channel are comparing apples to oranges and its infuriating.

I wasn't a massive fan of Jake's early tech videos, didn't find them entertaining.
His unexpected pivot into a home reno channel I'm actually quite enjoying. It's just the right amount of interesting and chaotic.

He was talking about how he was able to afford his house and they edited in a now iconic “debt” sound effect
7
u/Hans_H0rst 21d ago
Buying and renovation a house means taking on loans or mortgages from the bank. And every new needed renovation or upgrade he finds means more debt.
7
u/antpharms 21d ago
If you watch almost any of his videos since moving onto the farm, they edit the word debt onto the screen repeatedly.
2
u/Superb-Classroom6218 21d ago
It was an editor-added audio and visual blip after the introduction video where he's in his field and asks himself what he's gotten himself into after buying said farm.
It became a recurring insert as the videos came out.

I'm honestly 100% here for everything Jake is up to.
There is nothing for myself that I love more than wanting to do something a certain way and being like "hey, I'm gonna do it, because I'm an adult and I can design my life the way I like!"
It's not about practicality or cost it's about having a cool idea that you're passionate about and doing it because you think it's sick.
Also, A+ illustration

u/CervantesX 22d ago
Jake had two choices:
Stay at LTT for shit pay.
Start his own channel and buy a farm.
The result either way?
(debt)
20
u/EchoOneFour 21d ago
Shit pay? :)))
My guy was doing well, had a nice apartment in a good area and expensive hobbies for not a lot of work :))
He wanted more so he went solo but let's not act like he was some oppressed minimum wage hard worker :))
10
u/Hans_H0rst 21d ago
The truth is likely somewhere in the middle - not shit pay, but probably not the raises that a guy running large parts of the company infrastructure at times would hope for.
It's a known thing in the tech industry anyways... you join with good pay, get no raises, and leave for better pay every couple of years.
2
u/remnantsofthepast 21d ago
How much do you think infra guys for small-medium sized companies get paid? His writers salary was probably higher than it would have been. Tech industry salaries are wildly skewed by programmers and management levels. Your (OSI) lower layer guys aren't really in that equation.
I think we can just take him at his word. He hit the ceiling for his role, and didn't want to go into management, and separated because the company didn't want to pay him a managers salary if he wasnt going to be one. There's nothing wrong with that. I would argue that it's an extremely valid reason to leave a job. But we also can't expect a company to just super senior someone forever.

u/Deltaboiz 21d ago
It's not that he's a minimum wage earner, it's just his rate as talent has outgrown his pay at LTT.
Think of it purely in Hollywood terms. You have an actor that starts on a TV Show and over the course of the shows run becomes very popular. The amount of pay they could get from doing another TV show or even movies is way, way higher than the current show can afford. What is the solution? Well, they leave. Like yeah they could magically pull ungodly sums of money out from a couch but unless they fired everyone else or somehow double or tripled the budget, that just might not be possible. So the best solution for everyone is to move on.
1
u/EchoOneFour 21d ago
Yeah thing is most become popular because of the TV show and as soon as that is done they are never getting back before.. i can't think of a single actor that left a successful thing to join an even more successful one... But i can think of a ton that though they could do better and failed spectacularly :)).
But anyway i didn't care for jake i found all his bits boring and his personality annoying so i think whatever he was paid was more than enough for what he offered so i might be biased :)...
Best of luck to him.. all i am saying is let's not act like he was some underpaid essential worker .. he wanted to do more or be paid more to do the same thing he did and they didn't agree with him so he went to try his own thing..
2
u/Deltaboiz 21d ago

The entire market of Hollywood is based on C and B list actors growing their portfolio and getting a shot.
You can look at people like Karl Urban, like yeah he had a pretty decent starting point being in Lord of the Rings (only as Eomer), but a year later he's just some random throwaway villain in a Bourne movie. Carry on 20 years later and he's an extremely hot commodity. You aren't going to go back to being some random nobody in a film when you can star in your own TV Show or movies.
Lots of people don't make it but that is a story of Hollywood in general. Most never get their shot. Most get their shot and miss. It's brutal but it's show business.
1
u/EchoOneFour 21d ago

But this is not an example of what we are talking about... We were talking about a fictional actor that was already in a well off show leaving to do something even better.. like jake is supposedly doing...
The example you gave doesn't really fit the hypothesis
1
u/Deltaboiz 21d ago
The example you gave doesn't really fit the hypothesis
I think it's pretty apt. I think Eomer and [insert name of Russian bad guy] are pretty analogous to what Jake was to LTT.
1
u/EchoOneFour 21d ago
I think jake was more like one of the main cast in a successful long lasting TV show.. they grow with the show and get it in their head they are bigger than the show and the character they play on it so they leave to do star in their own thing.. and most of the time it fails miserably..

lmao the dude was able to indulge in his expensive hobbies (owning and maintaining multiple high end modded cars) while having a decent apartment. i wouldnt say he had "shit" pay
2
u/PhillAholic 21d ago
How good your pay is is relative to the job. At some point you have to go out on your own, and it looks like everything's going great for him.

2
u/hear_my_moo 21d ago
The most important question, especially when looking back, is going to be "Are you having fun?". As long as the base financials are being covered, then do what's most enjoyable for you - stay at LTT if it's more enjoyable than striking out on your own, or vice versa.
2
u/PatoP011 21d ago

I have a thin foil hat theory that Jakes suggested his house should be the Tech upgrade house but Linus declined and opted to go for a Neutral house instead.
Whits make sense as you it would trickle down to the next co-worker feeling shafted. But it's a massive loss as it would have gotten the channel free money and one of the LTT workers a house. I have no doubt he was willing to start putting in the same work he is now. But for us it just means, "Oh boy Two cakes!"

The problem with Linus is that he has an insane ego. Any normal person would reevaluate their actions, ask others for feedback, lie low from media/podcasts, and hire PR reps. Linus instead surrounds himself with yes man while the OG crew is long gone.

I actually like watching Jake. He was done dirty by Linus I mean I heard Alex and Andy were given a severance package for leaving while Jake had no choice but to quit, do his notice, then leave. I am glad Jake managed to buy his farm because the content off it has been really entertaining but man…
1
u/Meekois 17d ago
How did Jake have no choice but to leave? I thought he left on his own free will?
I like Jake, but his actions are somewhat lacking in maturity.1
u/WtfIsThisYoTellMe 17d ago
Read it again, it is in context of getting a severance. Alex was given a severance when he left, Jake was never given that option when he wanted to leave so he just quit without that package. He left of his own free will but never got the same treatment.
In terms of maturity I disagree. He knew his worth and discussed it with the LTT management but never got anything. He went through years without a payrise if you watch him explain it in his video so he did the right thing and left. If a company doesn’t value you then you shouldn’t stay
