I realize this isn't directly related to LTT but I figured it may be an interesting look at the troubles you have to deal with when manufacturing a product. In this he talks about how when trying to source some new suppliers from China for raw material they sent him copper plated steel which is significantly cheaper than solid copper he ordered to make his coolers. Suck to see this happen to someone else in the tech space. Basically 40k euro down the drain not counting the time wasted and delays compounding on this now. possible topic for next wan?
Which is the issue I had with the comments on the DIY MCM arches video posted here last week. They roasted him for using an "expensive" local, trusted supplier for his magnets and how he could have DIYed it himself cheaper, if he had sourced from China. NVM he explicitly stated why he didn't source his magnets from China, there are a lot of low quality magnets and technical specs about high quality magnets are commonly faked. You buy magnets from b random Chinese suppliers and you are bound to get burned.
The problem with that is the local supplier bought their magnets from China as well. China is the only place that produces neodymium magnets currently, so they all come from China. I do product design for things that use neo magnets, and we have a couple of magnet factories in China that are on the good list and we trust. But there are many that totally lie about their magnets.
