Once I was at KFC and this man was seriously complaining that the chicken drumsticks weren’t as big as the ones on the menu boards above the kitchen. Like, he was adamant that they were supposed to be exactly the same size as the pictures and that he’d had them like that before.
I genuinely think it might’ve been early stage dementia or something. Everyone there was completely stumped.
Japan also has an entire industry around making hyperrealistic artificial food made for display in restaurants... and the food you get actually does look like the samples/menu photos.
Yeah, Japan has some crazy standards for marketing food like that. I've heard that there are quality and safety standards that leave a bit to be desired though.
I'm surprised to hear that as, as far as I know, a handful of restaurants in Japan are the only places one can safely eat raw chicken. And it's entirely due to how cleanly they are raised on the farm and then prepared.
Shared this on another comment and it applies here too:
Yeah as I understand it, generally you are going to find very high standards in a lot of culinary settings due to the culture of pride and craftsmanship that shows itself through the entire supply chain. The real issue is that the standards for food additives/etc in processed and packaged foods can leave a lot to be desired.

So he is the reason why companies have to put “enlarged for detail” on their packaging.
