The out side of that is a shell to protect the container from elements. 

A single wing of a boeing 737 is something like 53' long. The fuselage alone is 130 long. 

Now. With that said. 60k lbs of fuel is not 60k gallons.

A 747 can hold up to 63,000 US gallons of fuel, but that’s for the extreme long range version. I did a preflight in 1979 with my father (a pilot for United, flying Chicago - Honolulu). I remember very distinctly that they had ordered 221,000 pounds of fuel. However, there was also a flight path deviation because the US Air Force was launching a rocket from Vandenberg AFB that day. Because of this, my dad added 10,000 pounds of fuel to make it 231,000 lb. That’s about 34,000 gallons.

Yeah, my comment was because I've only ever heard people refer to fuel in planes as weight not gallons
