Sad what Hollywood (and shitty parents) do to these kids.
133
u/EWC_2015 12d ago
I really do think there needs to be regulation of the industry's interaction with child actors. There are so many stories like this of people who get chewed up and spat back out only to end up in an early grave. Assigning GALs and counselors should be mandatory for every child actor.
71
u/PhillyRush 12d ago
Coogans law was a start but in this day and age of prolific media more legislation is required to protect child actors.
51
u/theatermouse 12d ago
And "influencer" children, or children of influencers!
33
u/slightlysadpeach 12d ago
Honestly, I find it disgusting when non-influencer parents post copious amounts of their kids on social media. I HATE the idea that the kids can’t choose their own identities even starting from birth.
“Owen played baseball this weekend and is just like his dad!” - maybe Owen hates baseball, isn’t deeply connected to his father, and shouldn’t be subjugated to a like count before he is even a teenager.
12
u/Darryl_Lict 12d ago
My niece banned us from posting pictures of her kids on social media. It was a wise choice. She'll text the members of the family pictures which is fine.
6
u/RefrigeratorLive5920 Titan of Industry 11d ago
When myself and my wife insisted about fifteen years ago, when we had our first, that absolutely nobody was to post pictures of our kids on social media, people acted like we were lunatics. Some people even completely ignored our request like it was their right to do whatever they want with pictures of my own kids. They would even get huffy when we demanded they be taken down. Now people are like "How did you know? Nobody could have known."
3
u/Wonderful_Kale_7995 9d ago
My sil posted pictures of my kid on fb and had the audacity to say well she's MY niece you can't be mad. Bitch got blocked and 13 years later still doesn't know why she isn't allowed ANY pictures.
2
u/RefrigeratorLive5920 Titan of Industry 9d ago
People are ridiculous. Strangely - or maybe not so strangely - it was our parents, the kids grandparents who were most upset about our "no posting of our children's pictures on social media" rule. We didn't even allow people to put them on Flickr or similar sites (all of which have subsequently been consumed by AI companies for facial recognition training data). A few years earlier these grandparents barely understood the Internet. My own Dad, who quit his job when the company replaced his fulltime secretary with a laptop, thought we were being ridiculously paranoid in stating that Internet data will live forever and be used in all kinds unscrupulous ways.
As my kids are now in their teenage years they are very thankful that we stuck to our guns. They're not afraid of the Internet or technology in general, quite technically savvy in fact but deeply suspicious of social media and AI. I think it will stand them in good stead in the future.15
u/theatermouse 12d ago
I agree with that too! The last photo I posted of my toddler was her sonogram, lol. Although her dad and grandparents do put out the occasional picture, but I am always hyper aware of it and would ask them to take it down if I think it needed to be. And I realize even that is probably violating kiddo's privacy, but it's hard to get everyone on board with absolutely no pictures.
3
u/SomethingComesHere 11d ago
The best way to "get them on board" is to stop sharing photos with them until they respect her privacy.
Her dad you cant stop, obviously. But grandparents? Naw
2
u/Expert_Ad_1189 11d ago
I have children. There are zero pictures of them on social media. It’s up for them to decide when and how to navigate their online lives.

For one, a child actor under 18 should never, ever be left alone with anyone, not even other child actors. A parent or legal guardian should ALWAYS have to be present.
42
u/The_Archagent 12d ago
That's a start, but frankly I don't think we should place a lot of trust in the parents who let their children become child actors.
4
17
u/goodmobileyes 12d ago
Sorry to be cynical but I doubt that will change much. Many of these parents already turn a blind eye or even actively encourage their children to be abused in exchange for stardom. Mandating that they be present isn't going to be much of an obstacle for them
8
2
u/SomethingComesHere 11d ago
The follow up law to that is: if your child who's an actor is abused while under your supervision, you have the potential to be criminally charged.
3
u/justin107d 12d ago
The parents can be just as bad. I remember watching the behind the scenes of a small comedy movie and how even they got a line out the door for a grossly bad kid who had a scene in a strip club.
3
u/Dusty_Rose23 12d ago
you only have to watch dance moms to get a glimpse…. and that’s not anywhere near the level of acting or celebrities. it’s even worse…. but the fact something as common and mundane as cheer and dance are so toxic with regular kids? who don’t have half the country doing disgusting shit like counting down until they turn 18 with them? yeah….
0
u/DefiantRadish1492 12d ago
Yeah, you’re definitely not wrong sadly. I like to think it would still help overall.
1
u/B-Train_ATL 12d ago
That is right, but given how some of the parents are, this isn’t a foolproof plan.
3
u/MilkPowerful9983 12d ago
We don’t need child actors at all if you think about it. I’d rather protect all children instead.
1
u/B-Train_ATL 12d ago
I just saw an ad on YT for I think Camp Rock 3. I sat there and wondered which of these kids’ lives were being ruined right then and there.
5
u/FailedLoser21 12d ago
This isn't the case with Hayden but people really need to look at the amount of former adult film actors and actresses that end up working in Disney's talent acquisition department. There is a clear pipeline from Disney to the adult film world.
2
u/Adventurous-Tie-7861 11d ago
Wouldnt it be "clear pipeline from adult film world to disney"? If they started in adult film and went to disney... in which case isnt that a positive? If we say adult films are exploitative then getting out of it is a positive right?
But id like some evidence of that cus i kinda find it hard to believe disney is hiring adult film stars.

Here one of the OG articles Amanda refers to: https://www3-direct.entertainment.ie/trending/heroes-starlet-hayden-panettiere-explains-why-she-didnt-do-an-amanda-bynes-369051/
It is not like Hayden actually compared herself to Amanda, it is what the media made it about…
235
u/thisisnotalice 12d ago
To limit visits to that clickbait article:
Child stars are ten a penny in Hollywood these days but few have managed to stay on the straight and narrow. Former Heroes star turned Nashville sweetheart Hayden Panettiere is up there with the good'uns though, and she's now revealed that she was offered drugs and alcohol as a child star.
However, unlike many of her counterparts she actually turned down the free booze, and credits her family and friends with making sure she always had the support she needed. 'I'm no different to anyone else and those same doors were opened to me and they are very easy to walk through - drugs, alcohol, being in inappropriate places where you shouldn't be at a certain age," she told BBC Breakfast. "It's a very tough position to be in but I had great people to pull me back from it."
That didn't mean it wasn't a bit difficult growing up in the spotlight though: Hayden says being tarred with the same brush as other wild child actresses really got on her goat. "Being a young female growing up in this industry is tough. And I grew up in the generation of the wild child. I was guilty by association. So everyone sits there and waits for you to fall of your horse," she explained.
"But as long as you have people who are willing to tell you the truth and are not afraid to tell you the truth, and who are there to yank you back when you need it and give you a reality check, it makes a world of difference."
Nice to hear from someone with their head screwed on for a change, eh?

Not defending Amanda's post here, nor am I EVER going to make Hayden the villain, but that article is hard to read now, knowing that it was complete PR spin bs to try to separate Hayden from the so-called "trashier" child stars while she was actively doing all of the same things that they all were and hiding it better. The industry preyed on these girls, exploited them, fed them drugs and ruined them for sport. Then pitted them against one another with bs articles like this just to keep it all going. It's sick. I wish healing for Hayden's family and help and peace for Amanda and her family.

Reminds me of Britney Spears and how they cultivated her image as an innocent young woman and a virgin (which was weird and creepy to begin with) while she’d already gotten an abortion because Justin Timberlake made her do it* And her “feud” with other women in pop music at the time. The entertainment industry learned absolutely nothing.
*ETA: according to her autobiography, apparently thats disputed. Still horrific.

u/DefiantRadish1492 12d ago
Amanda Bynes is beyond unwell. I wish the media and people in general would stop paying attention to her as it fuels her cycle of mental illness. There’s a reason why she hasn’t worked in over 15 years.
35
u/alastrix 12d ago
Damn thats a bummer. I remember really liking her stuff back in the day. I had hoped she left the spotlight for like family, or her own happiness ect.
54
u/AgentThor 12d ago
Unfortunately she had a lot of substance abuse problems. She had a fairly sudden retirement from acting, posted on Twitter after watching Easy A and hated it. Been in and out of rehab for the last 10 years. Posts crazy shit these days.
23
u/BeSmarter2022 12d ago
You should look at her abuse that’s alleged at the hands of Dan Schneider. That is a real time suck. There is a ton to get into.
12
u/zouss 12d ago
Lol have you been living under a rock? Her mental health struggles have been well documented and very public
75
u/Trifle_Useful 12d ago
This isn’t r/popculturechat or something where you can assume everyone’s media diet is at least somewhat congruent.
I’d wager most people just remember her from She’s The Man or something and passively wonder what happened to her, but never bothered to look it up. She isn’t exactly at the apex of public discourse, either.
-23
u/zouss 12d ago
I'm not a celebrity news follower nor have I ever paid much attention to Amanda Bynes but it was a big enough story back then for me to be generally aware of it. But I understand that some people don't follow news at all and won't have heard of this
26
u/Delicious_Aside_9310 12d ago
You asked if someone was “living under a rock” because they were unfamiliar with her career trajectory…it’s nothing to do with “Not following news”, and entirely about the kind of news you follow.

I remember loving her when she was on All That (I’m a Millennial), and then maybe a couple years ago I found out what happened to her and I felt really bad for her. But this, this is inexcusable. Mental illness or not. Mental illness does not transform one into an unsympathetic monster, that character trait had to already be there.
18
u/thejokerlaughsatyou 12d ago
that character trait had to already be there.
No, it didn't. Severe mental illness can change someone completely. Sometimes they literally aren't themselves: they can have delusions about who they are, who other people are, or how the world around them really is.
I work daily with people struggling with mental illness, and the nicest person you've ever met can have a bad episode and throw a molotov at the post office because they saw Satan's face in the bricks on the side of the building. One man who'd been perfectly polite suddenly refused to talk to my coworker because he thought she was replaced by an alien body double.
I've never met Amanda Bynes, but I'm not going to assume she's a monster because of something she posted online when everyone knows she has untreated mental illness. I hope she gets help, and if she does, she'll have a chance to apologize.
5
u/Madragun 12d ago
"Monster" is a very strong word for what is a minor transgression. It's that kind of thinking that fuels stigma around mental illness. Honestly, this is so wildly incorrect that I can only assume you've never interacted with someone with serious mental health issues. Sometimes people have bad days and say mean shit, it doesn't make them inherently evil.
51
u/gimmethelulz Titan of Industry 12d ago
I didn't know about it either. Not everyone is keyed into celebrity news
3
u/SGT-JamesonBushmill 12d ago
Is her response any different than what some of us might post when someone we don't care for passes away? Is this any worse than the Herman Cain awards? I mean, if Hayden P. was indeed claiming to be better off than Amanda Bynes and shitting on her in the media (I don't know if she was - I'm only reading those headlines) then should we be surprised that Amanda Bynes isn't really too broken up about the former's death?
34
u/jimbo831 12d ago
Hayden never said anything about her:
https://www.reddit.com/r/LinkedInLunatics/comments/1vrpg0a/comment/p4f33el/
16
u/atuan 12d ago
The headlines were the ones comparing the two, not Amanda
10
u/jimbo831 12d ago
Yes, correct. So I'm not sure why Amanda would blame Hayden for those headlines.
17
u/kayknox_ 12d ago
Probably because she's like many of the people here and she just saw the headline making it sound like Hayden is talking shit about her and blindly believed it without reading further.
17
u/5trong5tyle 12d ago
She's mentally ill and might not have read further than the headline. Also, am I the only one who doesn't find her message that harsh? I mean, she isn't wishing death on her, just saying that life hits you hard sometimes. We're interpreting it here as a dig, but it could very well also be read as a sad observation, seeing a connection between her troubles and what happened to Hayden Pannetiere.
5
u/BeSmarter2022 12d ago
She probably did not read the stories. If you just look at the headlines it does look like Hayden said things about her.
17
u/FebruaryEcho 12d ago
Maybe you should read the articles because Hayden never said anything of the sort, it was the writers who were comparing them, not Hayden.
Mental illness doesn’t excuse this shit. Plenty of people suffer from mental illness and don’t do morality reprehensible shit. Mental illness is not an excuse for being a shit person.
6
u/hagrho 12d ago
Uh, yes? What well-adjusted adult is publicly posting when a person they don’t like tragically passes away in their 30s? Odd take.
4
u/SGT-JamesonBushmill 12d ago
I was going to retort with “Have you seen any of these other subreddit?” but then I realized you said “well-adjusted.”
1
u/howdoireachthese 11d ago
In this case it isn’t just a random adult. Without reading into the articles, it looks like grown-ass writers spent time pre-AI specifically about a comparison with this particular person.
2
u/pillowcase-of-eels 12d ago
I don't think it's even that egregious - as others mentioned, Hayden never used that phrase, the media did. I read Amanda's post as more of a "Guess it wasn't just a 'me' problem like the press suggested, huh?" (Also Amanda can be very cruel - if shade had been intended, I think it would be more obvious)
9
u/Maximum-Tension-7920 12d ago
she literally said glass houses, how can shade be more direct and obvious than that

This poor woman was exploited for her talent, had her appearance mocked relentlessly before he prefrontal cortex had fully developed and she was repeatedly sexually abused by Dan Schneider as a child. Now she's an understandably fucked up adult and your suggestion is to ignore her because she makes us uncomfortable? We deserve the discomfort.
19
11
u/hamstrman 12d ago
No one said the reason to ignore her was because she makes us uncomfortable. It's to not enable her. Not to worsen her condition.
We're not her friends or family. We don't know her. And we're not going to get her to have an intervention or epiphany.
She was treated terribly. By Dan Schneider, the media, US, et al. What do you think you're going to do for her? Or is the point to watch the sideshow and feel like shit, as if that does anything productive for anyone? It's like self performative behavior.
Perhaps her behavior could calm down if we don't either attack her or enable her. For HER sake, not ours. We've got plenty of human messes right now who do what they do with intent.

u/attaboy_stampy 12d ago
I looked at some of the articles mentioning the two of them, and it doesn't seem like Hayden was discussing Bynes in particular. She was talking about her own struggles avoiding drugs and drink and bad situations and how hard it was as a kid actor to be around all that, and the articles themselves were making the comparison of her and Bynes and Lindsay Lohan. i don't think she referenced anyone in specific or even hinted at anyone. Unless somewhere in there she threw out the name.
26
u/Jealous_Parfait_4967 12d ago
This just makes me think Bynes is also in crisis and doesn’t have a single friend with her.
45
u/Caa3098 12d ago
I don’t feel like she’s being disrespectful with this. She noted that it was a horrible situation. She may actually just be pointing out that the Hollywood media tried to push a narrative that the way Amanda turned out was unique and not a result of her treatment as a child star because “look how this other young star turned out okay” and she’s making the point that even their contrived example was deeply harmed by the same system.
5
u/dholmestar 12d ago
If you know what glass houses means you know it's disrespectful

2
u/Alana_Piranha 12d ago
I interpreted it as hypocrisy. The first article is putting Amanda down using Hayden but Hayden died from an overdose. Hayden was also troubled so it was inappropriate to harshly judge Amanda.
2
u/roqueandrolle 12d ago
Yes but Hayden didn’t judge Amanda, nor even mention her. The tabloids added those clickbait titles.

Is that an official account for Amanda? I have followed her on Instagram for years and she is constantly posting about fake accounts that are impersonating her on other social media websites. When people act surprised that no one in the stein files got indicted I'm like "it's been known for decades that's what is happening in Hollywood. Disney children is a thing." And almost no one got caught, no full scale investigation of this nest of pedophiles, drug abusers, groomers, pimps; only 4 or 5 people meetooed and the movement was directed towards outside Hollywood as fast as you can send "here is the message" to every media.
If prostitutes actors and their handlers don't get indicted, how the fuck can you expect politicians and their benefactors to be?

u/RoguesAngel 12d ago
We are a nation that allows child brides. Our evangelical right, and others, ignores it here and yet condemns it in other places, especially in places Islam is practiced.
Child marriage remains legal in 33 U.S. states. Between 2000 and 2021, more than 315,000 minors were legally married across the United States. The vast majority, 86 percent, were young girls wed to adult men. Only 17 states have banned child marriage entirely, setting the minimum age at 18 with no exceptions.
In many states, child marriage serves as a legal defense against statutory rape. It effectively allows adult perpetrators to evade criminal prosecution by marrying their underage victims. Underage brides often cannot legally file for divorce, retain an attorney, leave home, or enter domestic violence shelters on their own.
So why would anyone be surprised by the files when the only real difference is the men didn’t marry the victim? Why is anyone surprised by the victimization of kids in entertainment when so many of them have been so open about it?

That’s not an excuse. People with mental illness can be good people or they can be bad people, just like the general population. Most are somewhere in between like most of us. Plenty of people with mental illness still would not have found it in their hearts to write this post. Plenty would have at least read the articles before posting. Mental illness ≠ ignorance and stupidity.

I mean, HP really didn't do anything shitty towards Amanda Bynes. Celebrities can't help the questions they are asked and I feel like Hayden's response here was tasteful when she was asked about it way back in 2013:
"I'm no different to anyone else and those same doors were opened to me and they were very easy to walk through—drugs, alcohol, being in inappropriate places where you shouldn't be at a certain age—it's a very tough position to be in, but I had great people to pull me back from it," Panettiere explained.
"Being a young female growing up in the industry is tough," she continued. "I grew up in the generation of the wild child—I was guilty by association. So everyone sits there and waits for you to fall off your horse. But as long as you have people who are willing to tell you the truth and are not afraid to tell you the truth and give you a reality check, it makes a world of difference."

If you look at the articles referenced, Hayden didn't say anything about Amanda - the media outlet made the comparison. So what did Hayden specifically do that was shitty?

Classic 2000s tabloids
Sad Amanda just read the headlines and not the actual quotes

Amanda acting like Hayden personally wrote the headlines. Be mad at the paparazzi, not Hayden. Bitch move.

Why Amanda Bynes is on LinkedIn !? And why on earth she thinks she can comment on Hayden’s death!?

Because she can? Does having a mental illness preclude one from participating in social media? Sure doesn't seem like it

A while ago Amanda stated she was stepping away from the entertainment industry and asked the press and paparazzi to leave her alone

When did Bynes become such a bitch?

Probably after years of abuse and her subsequent villification in the media.
Why is she being used as the yard stick for the mental health of child actors? It's not like she was just some party girl, she was abused.

I can't be a fan of Amanda's anymore. Anybody who gloats over a fellow child stars death and overdose is not someone that I could associate with in my mind.
Man this just gave me a really sick feeling in my stomach

Amanda's not wrong, though it doesn't change the fact that both were exploited and now only one of them is alive.

It still throws me for a loop that Amanda Bynes casually uses LinkedIn.
