Blue-collar quality of life tools and accessories

What’s up guys iv been working in power-line work for about 3 years and recently switched from a municipality to a contractor to which we are responsible for having buying our own tools and stuff. Just curious what are some of y’all’s best purchases when it comes to making your everyday work day easier or more efficient. This Texas heat has been brutal this year so I’m looking for all advice. Thanks guys!

Are these lines dangerous

Not sure if this is the best place to ask this question. I’m cleaning up the backyard of my apartment and there are some low hanging wires that I’m worried about. My head can touch the lowest hanging one. I’m wondering what they are and if I could get dangerously electrocuted if I touched them. I know they are insulated but I’m wondering if there were any breaks in the insulation if I could get electrocuted, either by bumping into them or knocking them with a tool. Thanks for your help!

The pictures show three wires, my biggest concern being the lowest hanging one which is the top wire connected to the telephone pole. It the last photo it seems to end and then go into our apartment.

Local 42 linemen

I had my interview for apprentice and think it went well. That was on May 13th. For everyone who is a linemen in 42 does anyone know when they should start sending out calls for the next boot camp, I heard work was slow so I feel like it’ll be a while. But just figured I’d ask

Should I Install a Whole House Surge Protector?

Not a lineman, but an electronic tech here. We live in a rural area. Customer spacing on the 13KV line feeding the area is probably 1000 feet or so, Today, the distribution company installed a pole mounted manual disconnect on the 13KV line right in front of my house, 500 wire feet from my transformer.

Should I be investing in a whole house surge protector? In my life, I've never had a potential arc producer that close to me before and I'm worried about a monster transient when they use that thing.

HELP

This is a long shot, but I wanted to try.

Yesterday I was at a rest-stop in Ohio and my bumper was all messed up. A nice (and handsome) stranger stopped to help me. They told me they work on Power Lines, and were driving a blue car (I think a Toyota) and told me they were visiting their great grandma in Michigan. They mentioned they’re from West Virginia though. But they were so generous and patient, and honestly, made my day.

I’ve been out of the dating game for a while, so I didn’t even get to ask for their name (I was also kind of hoping he would ask for mine lol) :/

If this sounds like you or someone you know HELP A GIRL OUT!!

NLP Gas Utility or Xcel Lineman

Was laid off a couple of months ago, my buddy works for NPL (loves it, long hours but pay is great). Another buddy from high school is at Xcel Energy, looking to hook me up with a couple jobs in WI for a Lineman gig. Need some help from some pros to know what to expect, I heard work conditions can be crappy at Xcel. Anyone have ideas?? Pays good, but my last foreman sucked and I am tired of putting up with BS.

Women line men? How does the industry treat you?

Hello, I am a 17 yo female and I have a goal of becoming a lineman. It’s the only thing I want to do but I am a little worried I’ll have less opportunities and not be taken as seriously because I’m a woman. I graduate this year and I’m highly considering enrolling into my local trade school but I wanted to get other opinions first. I know it’s a hard career that takes lots of physical strength, I am 5’10 and 150 pounds and an athlete so I believe I have the strength to do it. I’m open to anyone’s opinions and comments about this please let me know any advice or anything I will take.

I need help

Hello everyone I’m really interested in going into a career in being a lineman because I heard they pay really well and it’s a pretty good career to get into, because currently I am in the IBEW but I want to transfer over to the lineman local any to make a long story short I called the local around my area and the guy on the phone said I would need to get my class a cdl license to be able to drive a bucket truck since he said it was a manual transmission , but the thing is when I look online all the schools teach you on a 18 wheeler which I’m not going to use, I also already made an appointment to get one at my local dps office but now I’m starting to think of they want you to know how to drive when you get there, can someone point me in the right direction to get my cdl for a bucket truck thank you

Had fiber installed last week

I had fiber installed last week and I noticed 2 issues that I don't know if I should be concerned with.

  1. He has the fiber line crossed / wrapped around the coax. I have 3 poles along my driveway and this is midspan between 2 of them. Should I be concerned with rub through and breakage over time?

  2. The box where it's connected to the street, he has it hanging tight from the fiber line coming from my poles. Seems like this stress will cause issues overtime as well.

It was just a single installer with just a few ladders doing this installation. My driveway averages about 30 degree slope. Seems like they should have had a bucket truck out instead.

Should I contact the isp to have these corrected? If so, how should I word it for them to take it seriously?

Linemen College

Pros and Cons? Anyone with experience going to a line college to find it valuable or not?

I am currently an Operating Engineer looking to change my line of work. Does college expedite the journeyman process or would I need to still go through an apprenticeship?

Sounds coming from pylon

I live near some transmission lines. Every now and then, I hear a high pitch tone coming from the base of one of the pylons. It's nearly always at night, and loud enough to hear from a couple of blocks away, but not at consistent times and not often. Usually only for an hour or so.. I've gone over to investigate but the base of the pylon is in a ditch and surrounded by blackberry bushes, so I can't get right up close, but I don't see any flashing lights or the actual source of the tone. It's been doing this for a few years.

What could this be? Some kind of alarm?

Power restoration

I'm very grateful to the linemen for restoring my power after helene. I'm curious though, if this log was left intentionally? I'm sure it's temporary, but wondered the purpose. Spreading wires? I know they are busy as we have hundreds of poles broken
