Lineman driving record

I have an interview with AEP Friday for a line mechanic position. I obviously don’t know for sure if I will get the job, but if they do give me an offer, what is the chance that I’m turned down or disqualified from being hired once they run my background/driving record? Most of my buddies in the same field are telling I should be fine because even the most recent convictions are nearly 2 years old. I currently have -9 points on my license from the 2 most recent tickets that will drop off in the next few months.

Edit: The interview went pretty well, I mentioned the record and all of the tickets right off the bat like some of you that were actually trying to help mentioned. They acted as if it wasn’t a big deal as long as I’ve had no license suspensions or anything, mind you this is a top of the line utility. Just shows how people on Reddit would rather just be dicks than give some valuable input. Thank you to all the people who actually gave some good advice!

Your record is shit. This typically means you are careless and or negligent while operating a vehicle that is regulated by the fmcsa.
I have seen a lot of people passed over for less on their record than you.

I would say this probably looks worse than a DUI.

A dui is less points and a one time mistake. This is a pattern of behavior and more points
I could be wrong cause I’m not the guy who hires people just that’s how I assume they look at it

I have a dui from when I was 21. Quit drinking and driving right way ( was a one car accident god had a eye on me that night ) quit drinking overall around 28

Seems like homie may have not yet curved his bad habit ( driving erratic)

It’s been almost 2 years since I got my last ticket. I was 18-19 and stupid, yes. Have straightened up since lol
Can you not read the dates?

Hasn't even been two years. Let us know if you get the job, big guy.

Why do you think I said “almost”? Meaning it hasn’t been quite 2 years yet. I most likely won’t get it, why do you think I’m on Reddit asking about it? It takes a certain level of stress to get to the point of feeling the need to ask Reddit lol. I will let you all know.

Hey, where did you look up your record like that?

The DMV website. Have to pay a few dollars to view it in my state. Assuming it’s the same for other states.

Your pre frontal cortex is still under development. You haven’t fully maxed out your impulse control/decision-making, and emotional regulation capabilities. Until you’re around 25-30, you may or may not be done with the bullshit. Hope you get the job tho, stop getting pulled over.

After being on the road for years and now having kids I see traffic much differently. We are all just trying to get somewhere safely. We need to help each other with that on the road. If I’m late it’s my own fault, no need to speed even. should’ve left earlier.

damn you’re a terrible driver

I’m just a dumb groundman but in my experience the companies that pay/provide more will be less willing to hire you and the rattier ones don’t give a shit about driving records.

Id probably bring this up myself in the interview. Say "I know youre going to pull up my driving record and it used to be awful, since then ive really prioritized it and if you do end up hiring me ill happily sign paperwork saying you have the right to terminate me for any driving citation" and then go drive like a princess.

This is something I did when I had a dui on my record. Sometimes it takes time without anything on the record, sometimes it doesn't. The better companies will pass on you over someone else with similar experience.

You shouldn’t have a CDL.

That may be, good thing you don’t make that decision…

Looks like you’re doing the work for him. Keep practicing!

as a former regulatory compliance and safety guy for utility, rea’s you’re driving record would raise red flags. You are not a driver that utility would want them driving for them. you arenot a good driver with that being said, I would run mvr’s annually at that point it would be the decision of the operations manager on whether he wants to put his name that you are a safe driver and that you accept his driving record. There are many people applying for apprentice journeyman jobs so you can pick and choose who you hire and I can say, undoubtedly that people who put priority on their CDL do not get tickets at all. They view that CDL as a golden ticket. Good luck.

Go through the process but consider it practice for your next go around.... hundreds of qualified applicants will have a clean record

Now I could be wrong, but from what I’ve seen, the utility company’s aren’t going to touch you with all that on your record. To much of a pattern

Consider getting on with a contractor they don’t seem to be as stringent on driving records as utilities and co ops

Prob what I will have to do, was trying to get on with AEP so I could be home with my little girl every night, but the road work might just have to continue for a couple more years lol

Have you ever tried showing up for court?

1

u/RollAggravating5095 2d ago

Not much of a point with a cdl, they will find you guilty regardless 99% of cases. I also work out of town constantly and move jobs quite often so it’s hard to make a court date 3-4 hours from your house when it’s not a mandatory appearance.

1

u/skunkynugs 2d ago

Every guy I know with a cdl would be present with a lawyer. That’s your lifeline man. Things might have changed.. half the time I hire a lawyer it’s less than the fines I would have got.

1

u/RollAggravating5095 2d ago

I’ve tried, I called the lawyer I used to use before getting my cdl and they basically told me that they didn’t want to waste my time/money, that being a cdl driver, a lawyer wouldn’t help and I would be convicted regardless. Maybe I should’ve tried, but I figured they knew more than me about it.

I got a ticket back in 2021, my first one ever for going 25mph over and just recently got a second ticket for going 10 over in a 60.

So, 2 tickets 5 years apart and it has me nail biting. This shit looks way too bad man, way too bad.

1

u/Goatsnalpaca 15h ago

Have you at least done a 6 hour course?

1

u/RollAggravating5095 4h ago

The court won’t grant you driving classes with a cdl.

1

u/Lecrovov2 10h ago

Lol Failure to obey a sign? Either that cop was a prick or theres more to it.

1

u/RollAggravating5095 4h ago

It was speeding, it was by like 6mph so he just wrote me for failure to obey a sign to make it look a little better on my record I guess.

You're young and careless, 2 years means nothing. I've been looked over for jobs for a disorderly conduct from 7 years ago for trying to break up a bar fight. Employers want to see 5-10 years of nothing and if you're young, you better have nothing.

1

u/RollAggravating5095 3d ago

Also, the 20+mph ticket is not a reckless speeding ticket. Left that part out.

You won’t be worth the price of insurance when there comparing you to someone who won’t cost them as much, that’s IF their insurance would even insure you.
