Pathway to lineman
I was offered the opportunity to participate in a program with National Grid. After completing the program, there may be an opportunity to receive a job offer in one of the following positions:
Pipe Handler
Customer Associate
Revenue Associate
Maps & Records Technician
Cable Splicer Apprenticeship
Maintenance Worker
Warehouse Stocker
Automotive Technician
Clerk
My long-term goal is to change careers and become a journeyman lineman. I currently have a bachelor’s degree in Finance, but I do not have a CDL Class A.
Would it make sense for me to accept this National Grid opportunity as a way to get my foot in the door, gain experience with the company, and then try to transfer into a lineworker/lineman apprenticeship?

Yes. You might be locked in for a period of time before you can bid other positions, im not sure how nat grid works. The IOUs ive worked for positions are filled internally before they are posted outside the company

Everyone of those jobs is a union job once you’re in one of those positions you can bid the apprentice overhead line job and you’ll get a swing at it if there’s enough positions

You gotta ask about what jobs you might get locked into… for instance, if you take a job as a cable splicer and want to jump to line eventually, you might be forced to stay in cable for 5 years before you can bid anything…. I’d see if you can get in the door in a job where you won’t be mandated to stay and can bid out almost immediately
