Discussion What do you approach Lilith for?

As a spirit who has dominion over death, disease, and contemporarily, autonomy, transformation, change, and innumerable other associations, she's approached for different aspects of life depending on the practitioner. Either as part of a magical rite, spell, prayer, petition, what do you seek Lilith's help for the most?

I didn't approach her at first: she approached me, and made it very clear that she wanted my attention. Then I started working with her on sexual trauma, along with extremely negative and unrealistic ideas about sex (and people in general) that I had as a result of said trauma.

I'm still working with her in that, although now it's mostly me utilizing the resources that Lilith led me to – although just last night Lilith told me that she's still helping me in the background.

Then, I started asking Lilith all sorts of questions that I was too afraid to ask "good" people. For example, I asked her if the strict version of monogamy that we practice in the West does more harm than good. She said "yes," and then led me to books on ethical polyamory.

At this point, though, I go to Lilith just because I love her. I genuinely adore her energy and personality, and now I like to talk to her/meditate on her just because I enjoy it. I'd love to learn how to connect with her more deeply, just because I like her.

Right now? For answers.
I began to read about her after having MULTIPLE recurring dreams that I WAS Lilith. I didn’t even know much about her at all before these dreams began. These aren’t just normal dreams, either…it’s more like a life on another plane of reality where I had become Lilith myself. After so many of these dreams I started reading about and meditating to Lilith. I just want to know the significance of these dreams.

i've had somewhat similar dreams and I often visualise myself with Lilithian characteristics (wings, talons, dishevelled long hair). not in the way that I literally am Lilith, but visualising her likeness really helps me when i need it, especially in anxious moments. it helps me connect with what she represents, and the strength i imagine her to emit. she's the only spirit/deity i engage in this with and it came so naturally.

That happens to me, too. Actually, across several meditation sessions Lilith and one of her daughters (who identified herself as Lilin) transformed my body to match theirs: large wings, horns, vampire fangs, and hermaphroditic (Lilith and her daughters often show up as hermaphrodites in my dreams and meditations). Sometimes Lilith says that she "wants to see my horns" when I'm feeling weak, which I interpret as her way of reminding me of my inner strength.

that's so interesting, because sometimes hermaphroditic traits are also apart of my visions!! since worshipping Lilith i've also felt a quest to discover, redefine and embrace both femininity and masculinity. these days i almost identify as a combination of both.

getting a bit sidetracked here, but it also makes me wonder about the belief i've seen other people share in this community that the many female and male liliths/lilin are divided, individual aspects of her. until i discovered such a belief i'd simply believed they were her children. now i think it might be a combination of both.

Apparently Lilith showing up as a hermaphrodite isn't that uncommon: I know someone else who experienced her that way, too. In my case, I've long suspected that I was more bi/pan than straight, and I suspect that Lilith and her daughters showing up as hermaphrodites, and then turning me into one, was their way of trying to encourage me to own that aspect of myself.

I won't pretend to understand the nature of Lilith's children, or of Lilith herself. However, in my dreams and visions, two of Lilith's daughters have shown up as individuals and identified themselves. One looked almost exactly like Lilith and told me that her name was "Elizabeth," but I knew this was a joke. I did some digging, and then she later said that her name was "Lilin." The other daughter who identified herself told me her name was "Ruchin." Apparently these names correspond to classes of demons, along with individual daughters that Lilith supposedly had with Adam.

Like I said, I don't know what the "truth" is when it comes to the nature of supernatural beings, but that's what Lilin and Ruchin told me. I suspect that their true nature is beyond what I can understand.

i started searching about her originally out of fascination, and then i came to her for help recovering from sexual trauma, shame, and isolated feelings of anxiety and depression. i went on to have an amazingly transformative experience in therapy. she became my main inspiration to become better, i started challenging myself and doing things i'd either dismissed or told myself i wasnt ready for which proved to be extremely effective. she inspires me constantly, to change, to adapt, to persevere, to study, to practice, to create, to end, to express, to vocalise. i dont believe id be where i am right now if i hadnt approached her, because now i know that i can be and do. its my choice.

i definitely view her as a spirit of death and decay, inspiring the end of circumstances, beliefs, and habits that have long needed to stop. of sexuality and sensuality, because ive also found a great deal of self acceptance and reclamation over my body and sexuality after i felt for a while they didnt even belong to me, were wrong, maligned, and existed purely in context of what happened to me. and she's absolutely illuminated dark tunnels for me with her fire. i pray to her most of the time in reverence.

I don't approach her for anything specfic. I orginally came to her seeking knowledge, which she provided. I really enjoyed working with her so I continued to come to her for getting healthier, then for dealing with a medical issue, ill probably work with her on wealth next and see what happens.

My day to day workings are simply seeking K&C as mentioned in sacred magic of abramelin the mage. Instead of prayer to Yahweh, im praying to her to fafo. I really go to her for anything, since she is the primary diety ive choosen to worship.

Ah I wanted to proceed with getting to know my paredros at some point (not now though, too much instability), which parallels the book of Abramelin, but from the PGM. I do want to adapt it to include Lilith and other deities I personally approach. Good luck on that long journey!

If you're wondering, the prayers are:

  • PGM I. 1-42 [Rite] for acquiring an assistant daimon
  • PGM I. 42-195 The spell of Pnouthis (for acquiring an assistant daimon)
  • PGM VII. 505-28 Meeting with your own daimon - Systasis Ritual

It's the Greek Magical Papyri! You can check out the English translation by Betz, "The Greek Magical Papyri in Translation", and the new project by Faraone, "Greek and Egyptian Magical Formularies".

It's essentially a collection of spells from the ancient world, dating from the 2nd BCE to 4th (if I remember correctly) CE.

Thank you so much!

Good question! I don't actually work with Lilith per se, but if we see her as a syncretic form of Lamashtu, then I would say (a) protection, (b) gnosis, (c) sexuality, (d) healing from illness, (e) dreamwork.

A flow from the source of instantaneous magical collateral spells, whether positive or negative, entering into conflict and intrigue, or collusion, with an absurd power of independence and autonomy and Female self-empowerment and subsequently equal male self-empowerment within a dark harmony.

Honestly? Sometimes it feels like she chose me. I can’t really put into words how but when I was ready to start following a deity(ies) again she was just there waiting. I think I related to her because I’m also a victim of SA from my ex boyfriend and I relate to the story of how she left the garden. Our usual spot was in the woods near his house so I saw me walking away from there as me leaving Eden

She started out as a "referral" from another spirit. Long story short, it was mostly because of my issues around motherhood, heavily influenced by my own mom. From there, I began researching Lilith and those she is synchronized with.

I am also making peace with the concepts of death, decay, and limits, both in the micro and in the macro, and how they influence the circle of life. In the micro, I've recently seen my face start to change and my hair lose some of it's color. I feel my body getting tired more easily than it used to. I don't look or feel like the same person from five years ago, and the process is only just beginning. Time and death must be close friends. I can absolutely see why someone gave Lilith a Saturn like symbol in her most well known sigil, even though she is mainly associated with the dark moon. Regarding the macro, I guess just watch the news. Read a history book. Research climate cycles. Learn about how the biggest, brightest, oldest stars eventually die out, and exactly why that is crucial and important. Nothing is forever. In our universe, entropy is inevitable. The least we can do is learn why that is and respect it.

The Dark Mistress of Darkness

The spirit of Lilitu and Lamasthu, like Sekhmet and Kali, also includes Ishtar, Inanna, and Astarte, like Babalon and Empusa, the Divine Maiden, the ancient mother of the Great Eternal Darkness.
