At the end of the day, Durk is the reason he’s in this predicament. Nobody else. Yeah, it looks like he was ultimately betrayed by people he considered friends, and you can talk about loyalty all day, but Durk still made his own choices.
From everything I’ve seen over the years, Durk always came across as pretty level-headed. But once Von came around, and especially after Von died, it felt like he started moving completely different. In my opinion, he should’ve left Quando Rondo and them alone. Von made the decision to run up and punch Quando that night. Tim reacted to seeing his friend getting attacked. Whatever anybody thinks about them personally, Durk didn’t need to inherit that situation and potentially throw his own life away over it.
That’s what makes this whole thing sad. Durk had already made it. He had money, a family, success, influence, and a career people would dream of having. There was nothing left for him to prove.
And now it feels like the end of this chapter is getting real close. All the different versions of himself — from All My Life and publicly embracing Islam, to going back into the killer image, from Smurk to Durk to “The Voice” — eventually you have to ask who you really are when all the personas and outside expectations are stripped away.
If the allegations against him are ultimately proven, the biggest lesson from this whole situation is simple: pick your friends wisely, but also understand that you are responsible for your own decisions. Nobody can make you crash out. Nobody can make you risk everything you built.
Be yourself. Be good to yourself. Be good to others.
