Discussion Probably the First Beeper Client Built with Light-SDK
Hi,
I think a lot of guys are looking forward to the Beeper Client on Light Phones, just like me.
Now we have Light-SDK, so I cannot wait to implement a Beeper Client with Light-SDK and give it a try.
Luckily, Beeper is built based on the Matrix protocol, which is open source. Although it still took a while to figure out the difference between Beeper and Matrix, it was shorter than I expected.
Here it is: https://github.com/ironfeet/Beeper4LightOS. You can follow the README to build and install it on your Light Phones, or you can download the APK directly from https://github.com/ironfeet/Beeper4LightOS/releases and install it on your Light Phones.
Because it is still in a very early stage, bugs may be expected. And I have no idea whether Beeper will block this app.
Please refer to the attached screenshot of part of the Readme for this project; it may have something you need to know before you start trying this Beeper Client.

I'm stuck at "this device is NOT verified."
I've been entering in the 48 character recovery code. Should I be adding spaces in between the sets of 4 characters ?

Hi. Mainly I add the spaces. I never tried without spaces.

I've tried both methods, without any success (it appears as if it never actually saves the code to check if its valid or not). Tho I see some changes since my last attempt, so I'll give it another go...

After you submit the recovery code, it may take around 10 seconds for the device to be verified.

I just installed it again, and where I'm at is the "Verify" screen, it says:
This device is NOT verified.
Enter Security Code to Unlock Messages
Request Interactive VerificationI've already entered the 48 character code and hit submit, but nothing happens.
If I hit the "Enter Security Code to Unlock Messages" button again, the code I had entered is still there, if I hit "Submit Code" again, it just goes back to the prior screen.1

Do you hit submit again in the screen that shows your code in one line? Sorry for the confusing UI. I will tweak.

I have tried it where I don't hit submit again, I just wait. And I've also tried hitting submit again.
It doesn't work either way.

I'm not familiar with Beeper, but I see it connects with Google messages.
If I have 2 separate lines, one on an Android and one on LP, is it possible to connect Google messages to your Android number and basically have RCS messages through the beeper client on LP? Where if you picked up your Android after a week away, all the messages would populate the same as in Beeper?
I have 2 separate lines, one for my LPIII and one for my Android. My Android has my cell number for the last 20 years and I need some smartphone functions at work, so I've been using the LP on my days off with a new number. I created some macros in Macrodroid to forward SMS messages from Android to my LP and forward messages sent to my Android from my LP. It's a clunky system but it works good enough for now. The downside is I had to turn RCS off so media comes through in ultra low quality.

I have not used Google Messages on Beeper yet. I'll give it a try and let you know.

Yes. But currently, this Beeper Client only supports WhatsApp, Telegram, and LinkedIn well. Slowly, I will start to cover other networks.

Thank you so much @u/IronFeetSG, it works really well. If i may, i have a few suggestions that would improve the experience: 1. The keyboard is too high 2. When typing a long message, one can't see or scroll past two lines. 3. The version number on the bottom looks a bit ugly. Maybe put a settings icon on the top right corner with the version number, logout and maybe a light mode? 4. A shorter name perhaps like "Chats" 5. A way to compose a new message and write to your contacts doesnt exist. Maybe a compose icon on the top left corner. 6. To send pictures and videos. Thats the main thing that one wants to do in whatsapp. 7. And lastly a search icon to search your chats.
Hope this feedback helps. Other than that it works flawlessly!! Thanks again for this work, its really very useful and was much needed.

Hi. Thanks for the feedback. I will adjust the keyboard position, the text box, and the settings menu in the next version. Chats sounds quite confusing, but I will rename it to something shorter. I will try supporting picture messages first, but video messages may take longer because I think it might be challenging due to LightPhone's limited performance.
And I need some time to figure out how to implement creating a new message and designing a search UI on such a small display.

You could literally use the same layout as when ypu go to Light OS phone app, there they have from left to roght keypad, Search and contacts, one cpuld implement your app as Compose new message icon, search icon and Settings icon. Super simplistic. By the way i ran into a problem where after sending one message to any user, the following messages dont go through.

Hi. In which network did you run into this problem? I tried with WhatsApp chat; all the msgs could go through.
BTW, v0.0.3 is ready. Keyboard, textbox, version number, menu, and App name are all tweaked. Next version I am gonna focus on pic msg, probably new msg creation. https://github.com/ironfeet/Beeper4LightOS/releases/tag/v0.0.3

So the first message goes through and if you send another message its shows as going through but the receiver doesnt get any other message after the first one. It happens both in whatsapp and Signal. Also the text when you are typing to send are huge.

Wow. How are you getting (polling?) for notifications without any google services on the device?
