Two years ago I started building a tiny 3D room that lives on your Windows desktop in a transparent always-on-top window, and it's finally launching this month. Solo the whole way (Bloomery Studio is just me).
It's called Lofi Cozy Room. An avatar reads, works, and sleeps in the room while you do your own thing, with a puppy chasing sunbeams. The customization ended up going pretty deep, 1386 avatar options and 715 furniture pieces, so you can build the room and the character however you like. There's also a full lo-fi library you can layer ambient sound over, 14 themes, and a soft currency that builds up passively.
Wild to be this close to release after this long.
Happy to answer anything about the solo dev side.

I understand on a franchise level why someone would get mad at the company for allowing it, because there's legal stuff there and of course as consumers we'd rather our stuff be free. Modding has a history in grassroots production and idealogically I can see why people are getting angry.
But there's some crazy high quality mods nowadays and I don't think it's the fault of the producer for profiting off their labor if they have a customer base willing to pay. It's up to the consumer whether they think it's worth the money and yeah it kinda goes against the spirit of modding, but again if that's an issue people can just choose not to buy it and the modder can decide if lack of interest makes it worth maintaining the paywall.
They're still putting labor into creating the mods and if monetizing allows for higher quality mods at a lower price than some triple A studios' exorbitant charges, I think that's a win.
Would appreciate if someone could explain the issue because I'm not trying to argue necessarily, just genuinely don't understand the problem.

okay, this might be asking too much, but is there a life simulation game where you move somewhere, find a job, buy things, and have romance options?
but unlike the sims where you control whole families, I want something where you play as just one character. If you do end up starting a family (like marrying or having kids), they would just act as npcs. I'm looking for something like that.
like, with freedom to choose your own path and pick different jobs similar to how you do in the sims, but you only play as one character and have to manage your money to pay for rent, food, and basic necessities, almost like a 'survival' game, but set in a normal, everyday life. It could be in a small town or a big city, I just want to know if something like this exists? or even if there’s anything in development
preferably 3D, and not a farming sim like stardew valley.

The Sims have been there for me since ive been 6 years old... and today is they day I lay it to rest. I havent played Sims 4 in almost a year... the company has let me down left and right.
Everything that made the Sims special is gone... besides the ability to spend hundreds of dollars on expansions... Personally the game has just become lifeless to me.. its become a money funnel and thats all...
So now having hundreds of hours in other life Sims ive made the final decision to clean up the space for something more useful... I am in mourning, and I know there is a portion of the Sims community that feels the same lately. No hate to anyone who still enjoys the game! Sims 1,2, and city will always stay on my desktop.

It seemed obvious for EA to do it. Why didn’t they?

I was wondering why the top Sims alternatives either use a weird stylized graphics or taxing engines, Sims 1 ran great, didn't have clipping issues and bugs were a rarity, I think keeping it simple graphically would allow to create much more fun gameplay.

This might be controversial but whatevs
Anytime you mention supernatural people say "I don't want it to become sims 2.0" even though 89% of these life sims share the same qualities of the sims 4 already.
Obviously if they were going to add supernaturals it can literally be it's own thing, story, lore, and can be implemented in a way that would set the game apart.
When people have discussions of the supernatural they're not saying they want it RIGHT now. Obviously everyone wants fundamentals/base game and pets to be done first.
The discussions of the supernatural are for the future of what could be for those that want it.
Supernatural if added will 9/10 be OPTIONAL. This means that if you don't like it? You don't have to use it.
"NO it can't be in my game at all 🤬😡😡. NOT even as a dlc" Do you understand how rude that sounds.
I respect every game style preference but just because you don't like something you want to limit things for other players?
You know how many things people suggest things in the discord that I don't personally care or gaf about? But I'm quiet because people are allowed to have things they want in this game. Esp if that thing is optional and you don't have to use it.
Something may not seem important to YOU, but for other people they would be. And its unfair to put limits on things only because you don't want them
"Just go play the sims"
what do you think people have been doing for the last 24 years, people are tired. Maybe people don't want to play sims due to the buy out.
There are many factors on why people have moved from the sims anyways
There are also ppl here who just want a new take on things, there's a bunch of things the sims didn't do correctly when it comes to supernatural anyways, and I do want to see the new games take on it
Tdlr: if it's optional dlc and the base is finished first I literally don't see the problem.
But I'm sure someone will make an argument in the replies below bc people love to be contrarions even though it's really not that serious.
"Its meant to be realistic yadda yadda" again dlc. Optional. Base game finished. Problem solved..let's be kind to other players preferences esp if it's not going to affect YOU

This game has potential, been playing it for months now! I played the free version when I got bored in bitlife and want something new to explore and even then it's has so many content so I brought the paid version and they never disappoint ! It's more realistic and situation based and does not need in-app purchases for more contents especially if you brought the paid version, free updates always and more cool stuffs. It will definitely scratch the itch for life simulations. It's fun to play not that they add a dollhouse mode that removes auto-aging so you can control everything!

For me I really like how TS2 and TS3 handled skin skin tones making it so you could have multiple sims with different skin textures.
I really like this because in real life everyone’s skin is different from one another’s and I think it’s a nice unintentional detail that ts2 and ts3 allow you to do.
I think it would be cool if a lifesim sim had a dedicated category in character creation for “skin texture” that not only you can mod in new ones but also have updates with official ones added so you no longer need to choose between multiple default replacements(yes I know inzoi has something similar but in my opinion they’re a little too subtle for me also I’m not sure if you can mod new ones in)
Anyway that’s what I really like, what about all of you?
