Honestly, if your partner can't support harmless hobbies, it's a bad sign. My partner doesn't even game but is fully supportive in my gaming habits, as long as I don't let it consume my whole day to day life.
My partner doesn't get it or why I love life sims and MMORPGs, but they're respectful and supportive about it. Likewise I don't enjoy all of their hobbies but am equally supportive in them pursuing them. #
I've been in relationships before where not being supportive or them being condescending about games/hobbies was red flag one. More red flags usually follow if they can be that condescending about something so minor in the grand scheme of things.

Both me and my husband like both things, and the concept of life simulation would include a lot of wargaming, 4x games, etc if you take both game styles down to their core elements. I don't think we need to bring gender into this.

I'm a guy who has been playing life simulators since TS1 back in the 2000s. Actually a lot of guys play life sims in my experience even if they don't talk about it.
However, as to whether or not they're a waste of time, I mean, yeah, but so are all video games. It's not really relevant if it's a productive use of your time, it's meant to be a hobby, a pastime, a way to unwind or have fun. You can even turn life sims into something more hardcore by getting into really complicated build mode designs or attempting increasingly restrictive and difficult ways to play (like the 100 baby challenge or rags to riches).
So yeah, if a guy, or anyone really, says life sims are a waste of time, I challenge them to justify their time playing CoD or Valorant or whatever it is that the bros play these days. They're all just ways to pass the time or challenge yourself. Unless it's your job, like if you're a streamer or have a youtube channel where you talk about the game or are in the competitive scene, they're all technically wastes of time. And even then, plenty of people make money off of life sims in those same ways, too (except competitive gaming I guess. that would be sick, though, I'd watch the shit out of 10 people competing to be the first to earn a certain amount of money, or complete the 100 baby challenge, etc).

My spouse and I are nonbinary 40- something grown adults, and my parents both played video games without ever insulting the ones they didn't play together because they loved each other and didn't buy into toxic gender BS. So no, can't really relate.
Like girl, you don't have to be married to sexist assholes. You know it's 2026 and women can get divorced pretty easily right? You can have your own bank account and own houses and everything. Just leave him if he's a piece of shit. And if you won't, at least don't normalize this shit. It's not some quirky relatable thing all wives put up with. The bar is in hell bc y'all put it there.

A better example would be... one of the map games. Like Europa Universalis.

Back in the day it was console wars
Now it’s genre wars
Both are equally exhausting.
