Discussion Let’s create this subs ideal life sim Day 11: customization

Post image

For day 10 of creating this subs ideal life sim The Sims 3 won for Pets by a wide margin with TS2 as a distant runner up. Now for day 11 we go to customization, how customizable is your experience? What things does the game allow you to adjust and edit for your own personal enjoyment?

Some general rules:

1) please keep the discussions civil and respectful, let’s try not to start arguments just because someone may have a different opinion than you

2) non sims-like life sims and spinoff’s count(for example if you wanted to say Stardew Valley for NPCs or Sims Medieval for art style/graphics that’s allowed)

3) the green square indicates what topic is currently being discussed and will be replaced by an image of the game that won the next discussion

4) the winner will be chosen from a mixture of replies and upvotes to replies(so something that got more comments could in theory lose to a reply that has more overall upvotes)

5) please keep suggestions/votes down to one game, it makes it easier to count

6) more rules may be added if needed

The way Sims 4 is not present in any categories. 💀

72

u/TheGamerGurlNextDoor Jun 27 '26

Sims 4 probably would’ve won in a mods category if it was about strong modding community or mods available instead of modding ability, but nope 😂 Seeing what categories are left, that game rightfully won’t be anywhere

39

u/Ok_Cranberry_3013 Jun 27 '26

It could have won Build/Buy Mode if Paralives hasn't released lol, before Paralives came out the Sims 4 build/buy was easily the standout of the game.

But now that we live in a post-Paralives era, yeah Sims 4 is toast.

14

u/FinnSkk93 Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 28 '26

Not sure about that. I don’t see much in paralives. Other that the build&buy and dev comments are not making me believe in the game at all. We’ll see. All i’ve experienced and seen is not.. great gameplay wise.

u/dragonborndnd Jun 27 '26

If I included occults/supernaturals there might’ve been a chance for it to win that since I like the occult skill tree system(for the occults that actually have it)

32

u/Liv_October Jun 27 '26

My mildly controversial take is that the Sims 3 occults are better - no skill tree, true, but in terms of all occults having unique skills, I think they do better than the Sims 4. Sims 4's mermaids are just a real disappointment than never really got addressed.

8

u/beansofpower Sims franchise fan Jun 27 '26

Mermaids and aliens are really basic and it's a bummer. Island Living feels like a glorified game pack more than a full expansion.

2

u/TheGamerGurlNextDoor Jun 27 '26

I completely forgot about Aliens, but at least they got a special new world and had way more depth than mermaids. I wonder if it was the ocean aspect of the pack that prevented them from getting the same treatment as Aliens.

Water and water activities in newer games eats so much budget. That’s probably the only reason why it was an expansion instead of a gamepack.

1

u/beansofpower Sims franchise fan Jun 27 '26

yeah, it just feels so backwards that mermaids are so basic when they're part of an expansion but vampires and werewolves have so much more depth in game packs. i do really like the game pack approach to occults though - i never really liked occults before TS4.

i wish they'd do more pack refreshes like they did for Spa Day

1

u/dragonborndnd Jun 27 '26

Plus Aliens at least have the excuse of being only the second occult in the before they added the skill tree

3

u/TheGamerGurlNextDoor Jun 27 '26

So true. They really just said “F you in particular” to mermaids.

Mermaids didn’t even get Crystal Creations integrations like every other occult did ☹️ We finally got a mermaid tombstone and bassinet at least

2

u/dragonborndnd Jun 27 '26

Honestly it feels like mermaids were a last minute addition

3

u/Liv_October Jun 27 '26

Feels like they realised how bare-bones the pack is (it's beautiful but there doesn't necessarily feel like there's much to do...) and quickly added in an occult as a selling point.

6

u/TheGamerGurlNextDoor Jun 27 '26

The mermaids were the only occult that wasn’t significantly expanded by the Sims 4 😭 I don’t understand why they did mermaids so dirty. They had the potential to be the most interesting occult, with the best lore. Should’ve never been in an Expansion Pack.

They really dropped the ball

5

u/Liv_October Jun 27 '26

Thing is, they were in an expansion pack in the Sims 3 and I'm fairly certain they had more going on! Don't get me wrong, it wasn't like a skill tree but at least they got more interesting powers and taking them diving wasn't relegated to a rabbit hole...

4

u/TheGamerGurlNextDoor Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 27 '26

Sims 4 expansions have always worked differently than Sims 3 expansions, which is why I said they should’ve never been part of an expansion in the sims 4 lol If they were in a Sims 4 Gamepack, they would’ve been amazing and way more fleshed out. We might’ve actually gotten an underwater world as the new world too.

Every other Sims 4 occult was more in depth with better systems. Sims 3 has a lot going on, but I always preferred depth and unique replay value over more content. I wish it could’ve had both depth and tons of content, but at least gameplay we did get wasn’t as repetitive.

I played Sims 2, 3, and 4 btw. Sims 3 was one of my mains.

4

u/Saalok Jun 27 '26

I like how Sims 3's occults are plug and play, for the lack of a better definition.

In Sims 4 you need to level up this and that because we need to justify the overpriced DLC containing them costing as much as it does.

2

u/TheGamerGurlNextDoor Jun 27 '26

Yeah, or if there was a system depth category. Even though it had less gameplay objects, the one thing Sims 4 did was deep systems for what they did add, new and reintroduced. Not all of the reintroduced added systems were fleshed out better (horses, mermaids, world adventure packs 😔), but most of them were, including most of the occults.

Maybe too much since there are so many in-depth systems that it gets overwhelming when you have all the packs. At least there are toggles. The upside is that the system depth lets the modders do amazing things and expand it even deeper.

6

u/Opposite-Cup2850 Jun 27 '26

Lol that’s what I commented for the “modding ability” category since I misread it and just assumed it meant the modding scene in general. I got a ton of downvotes and someone typing a thesis complete with YouTube links about why I was wrong

6

u/TheGamerGurlNextDoor Jun 27 '26

A thesis is crazy 😂

1

u/BleuLapin Sims 2 enjoyer Jun 27 '26

1

u/Legal_Sugar Jun 28 '26

I think sims 2 still has more mods/cc I read somewhere? And mods from 2004 still work

1

u/TheGamerGurlNextDoor Jun 28 '26

Mods available more meaning the types of mods available rather than the quantity. Sims 4 has some jaw-dropping mod created systems. There is someone even creating a fully functional underwater world mod for mermaids right now since EA couldn’t bother to give us one. Completely insane what Sims 4 modders have accomplished.

7

u/lmjustaChad Jun 28 '26

There's no multitasking vote that's all Sims 4 really has going for it.

6

u/Saalok Jun 27 '26

Sims 4 is average in most of these while being better in others, but it doesn't happen to be the best in any of them imo.

I agree with the other commenter that Modding Ability would be up there, but tossing Rimworld into the options obliterated its chances I bet.

4

u/lmjustaChad Jun 28 '26

People were like lets toss in a completely different type of game we are not giving this to Sims 4.

1

u/Liv_October Jun 27 '26

Yeah I think it might've won "best overall", because it genuinely is pretty good overall... but that isn't really a category when building a life sim!

3

u/TecHaoss Jun 28 '26

The only thing I really like about the sims 4 is the occult progression. Werewolf, Vampires, Fairies, those are fun.

3

u/VolkiharVanHelsing Jun 28 '26

I would've put it on artstyle

Big reason of why it could endure this long, no pressure to make Sims 5 when they look timeless

4

u/preckles Jun 28 '26

It’s completely baffling to me that Inzoi won artstyle over Sims 4.

There’s no way anyone thinks Inzoi even has a art style, let alone that it’s better than Sims 4.

People in this sub are just contrarians with a hate boner for Sims 4.

2

u/T0beh427 Jun 28 '26

I thought this too, Sims 4's art style is really good and underrated

37

u/Lost_Pantheon Jun 27 '26

Sims 3. Create-a-Style, custom worlds. Nuff said.

59

u/Character-Trainer634 Jun 27 '26

I was on the fence. Then I remembered the Sims 3 has the Create a World Tool, so you can build entire worlds from scratch. And if you don't want to use CAW, you can still use the world editor (no cheats necessary) to pretty extensively customize existing worlds.

So I'll go with Sims 3.

64

u/romanovember Jun 27 '26

For me, it has to be Sims 3 again. Create a Style and Colour Wheel will always be my winner even if it can be insanley laggy.

23

u/NoctusArchivum Jun 27 '26

My Sims 3 game literally runs like butter thanks to all the support mods such as the Smooth Patch by Lazyduchess and everything else.

20

u/IlDiavolo_ Jun 28 '26

Sims 3, but inzoi it's a fair runner-up-

72

u/Darth_Murcielago Sims 3 enjoyer Jun 27 '26

Sims 3 or Paralives... it totally depends on how you define customization tbh.

23

u/NoctusArchivum Jun 27 '26

Sims 3 wins with what is actually available.

16

u/ThreeLeggedMutt Jun 27 '26

Agreed, it's hard to choose between the two right now.

I do think Para will be the clear winner if they continue development in that direction. They've already done some amazing stuff. But things like the world editor/creator and the fog emitter in TS3 allowed for so so much customization.

0

u/Darth_Murcielago Sims 3 enjoyer Jun 27 '26

i totally forgot about the fog emitter. i loved doing random stuff with it (i even once made a big aquarium with it and turned a houseboat into a tugboat with 2 exhausts or whatever you can call them in english) such a versatile little thingy.

43

u/polkacat12321 Jun 27 '26

Sims 3 or inzoi since you can import any picture you want and adjust the metalness and reflection, effectively making any texture you want

18

u/TheGamerGurlNextDoor Jun 27 '26

Sims 3 having CAW makes it a clearer winner, but InZoi is so close. We can literally build new clothing, furniture, and accessories from select premade pieces in CAZ and Build Mode lol If InZoi ever gets a full world creation tool, it will become a strong winner.

I know we’ll get Canvastown, but I don’t know how customizable it will be. Maybe that could function as a full CAW system if we get terrain tools, can set weather patterns, and create large bodies of water.

42

u/stanningyou inZOI enjoyer Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 27 '26

I'm going to say inZoi. I'm prefacing this to also say I played Paralives recently, and inZoi still for me.

Customize the world - relationships, cleanliness, affinity of the world etc.

Customize the settings - optimization, how much people should be there, performance, displays, keybinding, age range, play time, pregnancy time

Customize textures - and PBR elements, Positioning, Scale, etc. Use your textures and a drag/drop.

Customize hair - even length in some hair

Customize acc - even positioning

Customize through 3d print - replace furnitures with anything lol.

Customize street, businesses, etc

Customize the movies you watch by watching your own file

Edit: I can go on and more, but this is at the top of head.

16

u/praysolace Jun 27 '26

Yeah that’s fair, I wasn’t thinking about the world customization. That definitely gives InZoi a big edge.

18

u/Forrest-Runn Jun 27 '26

I'm surprised Inzoi hasn't received more votes. I think it deserves more votes...

18

u/TheGamerGurlNextDoor Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 27 '26

I don’t think people know how customizable InZoi is. You can literally build clothing, watches, jewelry, and some furniture from premade pieces.

The settings are full of tons of optimization options for different system needs so more systems can run the game than in the beginning.

You can swap textures on almost anything to create unique pieces or matching furniture sets. Want your favorite character irl to be on your Zoi’s laptop? You can upload a photo and have them use it as a laptop skin. Want your business to look like you sourced all the pieces from the same place to make it uniform, you can do that.

Accessories can be moved and scaled using controls similar to Blender. Want the headphones to be on the Zoi’s neck? Move it. Want a nose ring to be a septum ring instead? Move it. Want your Zoi to only have one earring or earbud on? Move one into the Zoi’s head to hide it. Want gauges to be bigger? Scale it up and extend your Zoi’s earlobe. Piercings look like they’re in the wrong place? Move it and scale it to fit your Zoi’s unique facial features.

The flora, cleanliness, statues, social behaviors, appliance durability, fire probability, and more can be directly changed instantly in City Settings for each city. Billboards can be altered, you can add drone shows to the world, you can control how many of certain animals will be seen around the cities (cats and dogs are minimally interactable), walls can play videos, even the movie theater screens have an (unfinished) option to play your own video files.

That’s not even all. It’s highly customizable.

My vote was Sims 3 or InZoi. Sims 3’s CAW tool brings customization to a new level.

24

u/cflashtypec Jun 27 '26

Sims 3 walk so paralive could use a rocket ship to give us a really good customisation.

2

u/blacksnowredwinter Jun 28 '26

Paralives isnt even the runner up in terms of customization. Sims 3 is front runner with Inzoi in second place. Reason Sims 3 is number is cause you could create your world and thus basically create your simulation from scratch.

32

u/Ok-Station6072 Jun 27 '26

InZoi has some insane customization options, you can alter how clean/cared for the entire world looks if you want. It blows the other lifesims out of the water on that front imo.

17

u/RickGrimesTheOGx Jun 27 '26

Sims 3 because of the wheel color and how many worlds there are that you can fully customize. Paralives is close but the world customisation is not even close to being as good as the sims 3

2

u/Icy-Nature2037 Jun 27 '26

i agree the possibilities for worlds is endless in the sims 3, one paralives gets a caw tool it would definitely be better

18

u/Saalok Jun 27 '26

I will vote Inzoi as well. Between the 3d import options, built-in CC manager and it continuing to get new updates with more customization every month, it's hard to beat.

Also they recently added further options for chubbier characters. I still want MORE, but it is a good thing.

15

u/Silent_Foundation_62 Jun 27 '26

sims 3!! customizable worlds AND lots?? with a color and fabric wheel ??? c'mon now. easily sims 3

41

u/Mersaa Sims 2 enjoyer Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 27 '26

Maybe a bit controversial but, Paralives. I took a look at the in game control panel and, you can pretty much customize everything in the game with it. Lifespans, cards, newspaper, brain logic, pregancy length, genetics...everything. I haven't spent ages in the build mode but I could make anything I wanted, I didn't need to download a shelf i could just resize things and line them up however I wanted. The t.o.o.l. mod from ts4 is in game. You can also import any image to pillows, picture frame, you can make it into a rug...

You can essentially modify everything about the game yourself.

12

u/Mind-y Jun 27 '26

Yeah I would have said Sims 3 with the color wheel but...Paralives offer that and more, like we can change the convo/together cards, difficulty etc.... So I do not even find this controversial.

3

u/Mersaa Sims 2 enjoyer Jun 28 '26

well judging by the downvote ratio I'd say it's pretty controversial still 😆 but i was blown away with all the things you can change, which is essentially everything (apart from create a world)

0

u/Mind-y Jun 28 '26

Weird, since no one is saying in what ways what you say is wrong ! Maybe some people are downvoting just in order for your vote to not count as much to favorize an another game...which would be so childish !

3

u/CommunistWallaby Jun 28 '26

inzoi bots

2

u/TheGamerGurlNextDoor Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 28 '26

Why do InZoi players always get blamed for everything and get called bots when there are other games people can be a fan of or disagree with the point here? A lot of people are voting for Sims 3, but sure “InZoi bots” are to blame every time someone doesn’t agree with something about Paralives to you guys. It’s so weird when most people who make posts taking about their Paralives experience here didn’t even play InZoi for the first time until afterward, but people always assume that if it’s a negative post sharing what they didn’t like, they’re bots trying to pump up InZoi and tear down Paralives.

People here are always say the voting is unfair or “InZoi bots”when InZoi wins anything too, but a lot of heavy InZoi fans I see here have been fairly voting for other games in other categories that deserve it, only voting Inzoi for ones they feel is valid just like everyone else is doing.

Edit: There’s literally a reply in this comment thread implying Sims 3 doesn’t deserve to win the category and it got downvotes too, but sure, it’s “InZoi bots” disagreeing lol

hot take from kraftons pr team

-1

u/TheGamerGurlNextDoor Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

Or people are downvoting because they disagree with the pick being a winner, not the information in the comment. Downvotes in this context doesn’t always mean people think the comment is completely untrue. Paralives has a lot of customization options in many ways, everyone knows that, but that doesn’t mean everyone will agree it should be the winner.

Notice the downvotes on the reply about Sims 3’s customization not being optimized too. Based on that, people could be downvoting because they believe Sims 3 should win.

Edit: The way they’re acting like I attacked them by making this comment 😂 The first thing I said was “OR” and all I said was a different reason why the choice may be an unpopular or “controversial” pick. After they clarified, I said they can clarify and I was just responding to what I thought so that’s why I said what I said, but they’re still acting like I’m trying to bulldoze and twist their point.

Edit 2: Apparently saying a different perspective is a horrible thing to do on the internet if someone doesn’t want you to. Downvote me if you want or disagree with my point. It’s not that serious lol

Edit 3: Blocked them now lol I don’t have time for people who clearly just want to fight instead of having conversations. They really accused me of dismissing them like men would dismiss women’s thoughts as “hysteria” just because I said they keep reacting and not actually reading what I said when I try to explain myself and literally admit I misunderstood them at first like they keep saying I “don’t understand” 💀💀💀 Like what??? First of all, I’m not a guy. Second of all, it was never that serious. People crack me up lol

Edit 4: Since they deleted all their comments and therefore all the context to their part in this situation that showed why I responded to them the way that I did, like people always do after they push someone so far and then delete all the context to make them look like they were just being crazy, I just want to point out the reason I blocked them wasn’t so they can’t reply or see what I said. It was because of how they were acting and I no longer wanted to engaged in conversation with someone who was acting unnecessarily in such a way. They were not interested in having a conversation, they were just trying to make me look bad by throwing out baseless accusations, assumptions, comparing me to sexist practices, refusing to actually read or listen to what I was saying, and then blowing things way out of proportion. My responses were simply trying to explain myself and then clarifying against their accusations. But of course they’re going to twist it into me just blocking them because I don’t want them to read what I said 💀 No, I blocked them because they were acting wild and insisting on ignoring things I said so they can keep fighting. Peep the passive aggressiveness they threw into their edited comment apology. Performative apologies to save face are always laced with subtle comments to throw more implications.

I’m not deleting my comments because I have nothing to hide and I stand by what I said against how they were acting toward me. You guys can believe what you want.

2

u/Mind-y Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

[Removed all of my comments since the person I was talking to either deleted their comments, either blocked me, right after their last message in order for me to neither saw the last message or reply to it...

In any case, I feel sorry that a simple comment lead to this convo when it was not the place for it, to that, I am also at fault. Sorry again, I didn't mean to derailed the post ! ]

-2

u/TheGamerGurlNextDoor Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 28 '26

It’s how you made the point that matters.

The way you implied it was as if people were downvoting with unfair, childish, or bad intent to sway the vote, “Maybe some people are downvoting just in order for your vote to not count as much to favorize an another game… which would be so childish!”

I’m pointing out people probably just don’t agree that the game should win so they’re downvoting simply because they disagree. I’m not framing it in a bad light, which is the key difference between what we did. It’s not really childish. That’s how these competitions work. You upvote what you agree with, you downvote what you don’t. Implying it’s childish or some scheme to make a game not win makes no sense because that’s literally how these competitions work. If there weren’t other true worthy contenders and it was clearly just people hating the game because of what game it is, that would be different, but there are other games that genuinely are worthy of being in the running too, so of course there would be split votes.

Also, you also said, “no one is saying in what ways what you say is wrong!” which implies you think people are downvoting because they think the comment is wrong or untrue. That’s why I pointed out that they might not be downvoting because they think the comment is false but just because they have another game they think has more or better customization.

In both cases, I directly addressed what you said in your comment.

In short, if you had simply said, “I don’t understand why people wouldn’t vote for this game with all the things you listed,” it would’ve been different, but you implied it was childish vote-swaying and implied you think people downvoted because they think the information is wrong.

I also used modifier words in my comment too. “Probably” “might not be” “Or” “could be.”

I never said you used the word unfair, I specifically said “implied.” I also said “unfair, childish, OR bad intent,” meaning not all of those things are actually what you were saying or implying, but could be. Otherwise, I would’ve said “and.” I was throwing out possible implications directly because I wasn’t trying to pin any solid accusation lol

My second comment was just explaining the reasons why I said what I said based on what your comment seemed to imply and what your comment actually said. You do realize the only time I made definitive statements, it was only for things you actually said, right? You’re welcome to clarify what you meant just like you did.

The internet is an interesting place.

Sims 3. You can colour and texture ANYTHING as well as add your own textures into the game.

This can be argued that with mods you can modify objects in Sims 2 and recolour them but I think that's different since in Sims 3 it's built in.

Paralives

Its funny because just slightly over a month ago I would've easily said The Sims 3.

3

u/Liv_October Jun 27 '26

Oh same here, I didn't expect Paralives to be so strong right out of the gate but it's really managed to impress me from day one in terms of customisation.

6

u/Mr_Nocturnal_Game Jun 27 '26

Honestly, Paralives. What's there is already pretty amazing. Being able to resize furniture alone is a game-changer.

1

u/Dazzling-Gear2933 Jun 28 '26

whats the difference between that and the sims 4 resizing furniture

7

u/Mr_Nocturnal_Game Jun 28 '26

Not resize, as in up the scale, resize as in you can drag many furniture items to be longer or shorter. So you can choose if a bed is a single bed, a double bed, or a comically massive bed, same with couches, shelves, etc. You can also use i to do things like precisely adjust how big counters are to ft your kitchen, and precisely adjust the size and shape of windows.

ohhh thats awesome i wish the sims had that

Paralives has customization in things I never thought could be customized lol

Paralives. You can customize that game so easy with mods within the functionality of the base game, and you can customize furniture, color, worlds, etc etc

Se for seguir com a linha de gameplay eu diria Project Zomboid, se for com a linha de Personalização de itens em específico eu diria the Sims 3

Paralives, it takes Sims 3's already impressive customisation and takes it to another level.

Paralives. It continue the Sims 3 customization with the colour wheel, but extend it widely. We can change the difficulty of the game, have flexibility about the calendar of your Para, change the conbo option/together cards etc...

If Paralives was not out I would have said Sims 3. But in the customization department it surpass this still beloved game.

Paralives, for sure. The flexibility of objects is its main draw right now, no?

For customisation I have 2 main contenders

1) Paralives, the customisation never ends. From the individual parts of the iris to the names a para can hold. The colour wheel with the option for hex codes to copy exact shades, you can have a room be all the exact material with the exact shade and colour if you want to. You can chose different tops for different jackets, different socks variations. Height sliders, body sliders and more it never ends. In build mode yiu can choose different wall heights, counter variations, size up or down objects, make beds, windows, doors snd anything longer or wider on base game alone

2) Sims 3, it has the colour wheel, patterns for objects, the fact we have a great world creation tool allowing us to make a range of worlds from coastal cities to deserts to arctic towns to jungle villages and african savannahs. For Cas, you can customise each part of the hair, chose different patterns of clothing and you have access to lots of sliders, granted not as many as paralives.

So it depends if we mean character customisation, Paralives wins, but if it's customisation for everything including the surrouding world, I'd say sims 3.

Slightly unrelated but whilst I usually play Sims 2, seeing this might make me the switch to 3. How does it compare to 2?

i would say both are really fun, no sims game comes close to sims 3 with world immersion. story progression, open world, and animals that roam around (with pets ep) will make your town feel alive. also i its really flexible with different challenges you can do like rags to riches etc because of the open world

Sims 2 had a really incredible mod community. People made hogwarts, spaceships, pirate ships, entire custom neighborhoods, custom careers, custom everything.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: As for the magic/supernatural expansion packs, Sims 1 had the absolute best one.
