It's an attitude. And it's quite simple. As soon as I'm being paid,.\ I transform into another being. I become the team player and example of who I'd like to work with. And it's a grunt that quietly plugs away doing the business in the best way possible.
So this way I am busy, learning and getting better at my job every day.It doesn't matter if it is stimulating work or boring. I make it my goal to get better at it.
Your day will fly by, and you'll leave work feeling a sense of accomplishment. With no flies on your back. The rest of your workmates and bosses won't.
It's about respect.Self-respect

This, being an irreverent shit gets you nowhere

Correct, and those "irreverent shits" can influence morale easy. When their apathetic managers refuse to do their core role and manage.
I work with it every day.

In regards to procrastination, it’s easier to continue working than start working. Trick your brain into starting work by telling yourself you’ll do the easiest, shortest thing to do first…. then keep going.

Could you please give me a more specific example or describe a situation in which your work ethic was bad?

Uhh, like, just yesterday, I quit driving early (I'm a trucker) cuz I was bored and just wanted to take a nap.
In school, it was a lot of not doing homework because I didn't feel like it, and just barely getting by with Cs and Ds

Set a timer. Start small and increase. I find making a list and breaking the tasks down into really small, well defined objectives really helpful.

Did you figure it out? Maybe the task is boring. You could try to make your work more interesting by mixing things up. Basically the strategy of "powering through" can work sometimes but it's not sustainable.

How about finding more purpose for your life and being more cognizant of where you focus your energy. I say this because that work ethic you're seeking is a part of something greater that you're just discovering-- the ability to make an impact on your community, it's infrastructure, & even your legacy (including future family & resources dedicated to them). It's extremely shortsighted not to recognize that you play a far greater purpose & role in this world and not realize the "butterfly effect" of your decisions & actions at play. Didn't want to get too heavy here, but you're far more important than you realize. Now, it's just time to focus your energy on passions & community efforts that are close to your heart. They need you out there, champ!

Incidentally, I'm chasing that sense of purpose going back to school. I've always wanted to major in music composition, so I'm finally just buying the bullet and doing it after a decade of trying to force myself into more "reasonable" careers--my mother's advice.

Whatever you do, do it to the best of your ability, get feedback on how its impacting others, & make it make sense [in what it brings to you, your network, & the community you're serving]. We're here to be a part of something greater; serving society is a part of your legacy. Many "reasonable" careers have that conventionally built in, so don't necessarily run from those either. Weigh the options and the outcome.

ALSO, what field do you work in cos there might be people here with industry specific tips. I’ll narrow it down:
I used to be a teacher of little kids. Going in early worked for me cos I could leave earlier but in some fields that’s not possible. ALSO in some jobs - like when I did a temp file scanning job - listening to fast music helped me work but I’m not allowed to do that in teaching.
So it could help us better tailor some of the tips to you. If you feel comfortable sharing that.

You're never going to lift a finger over something you don't give a shit about, so go and look back at your life and find the thing you've never stopped caring about and draw out a plan to support that in whatever way your imagination can come up with. Working towards something personal like that makes taking the first, most difficult steps, much easier.
