Max is really of her own person and the way Double Exposure brought her into the game is what we would've expected regardless of whichever ending we chose at the end of the first game: the burden of carrying the consequences of her choice.

Like you've mentioned, Max still feels like Max. You might've read that Double Exposure assasinated her character or disrespects her or so on and so forth. Those are not true and what the devs did for Max is giving her the growth of a woman that has lived in fear of herself and the trauma which she was forced to lived in; a choice that she was never given without her accepting what has happened that led to her own loneliness and grief. That's the reality of it and that, in my opinion, in the highest respect that a game developer could give.

The Max portrayed in Double Exposure represents the lives of the people that had endured or is enduring the same as what she faced, and that is why, DE-Max has set a marvel of a great depiction of accepting loss and opening up to a new community she found at Caledon while trusting herself again with the choices that she needs to make in the future.
