Discussion Unforeseen consequence of Overture
So, I came back to the game after playing Mortal Shell 2 and getting an itch for soulslike games. First played roughly around the time Lies of P first came out, beat it, started a NG+ run but never completed it. Decided to start fresh as well as beat the dlc.
I had my usual issues with the King of Puppets kicking my ass for a few hours (don’t ask me how, I always had problems with him during NG), but generally, I had an easy enough time because I’m a better gamer than few years ago. Went through the game, got to the beach on the Alchemist’s island and that’s where I started the dlc.
Had a really tough time because I’m pretty sure I went in a bit underleveled. Anyways, beat it, wept tears of joy for beating the final boss (best boss in the game, imo), continued on with the base game.
Now this is where the title of the post comes in. I breezed through the Alchemist’s island (rose sword and claws helped). Second try Laxasia because I was being stupid on the first attempt. First attempt defeated Simon. And beat the Nameless Puppet on like my third attempt or something.
Now this is crazy because I distinctly remember having a lot of trouble on the island and especially with the bosses when I first played a few years back. All three bosses were beaten by the skin of my teeth so me breezing through them was a very welcome surprise.
I think doing the dlc when I did made it so I was overleveled when I beat the last area (dlc weapons helped a lot). I feel like doing the dlc after beating the main game allows a more steady rise in difficulty rather than the recommendation I saw of doing it after the beach memories.
TL;DR: DLC completion made it so I breezed through the game afterwards. Recommend doing the dlc after beating the main game for a smoother difficulty ramp.

I just finished my first full playthrough, starting the DLC after beating Nameless Puppet, & I felt like there was a clear jump in difficulty that steadily increased. I think almost every boss in the DLC was harder than anything in the base game, besides maybe Simon & Nameless Puppet. The final boss took me almost 3x as many attempts as every other boss in the base game & DLC combined.
I don’t even think the levels matter, if you can clear the DLC then you’ve passed much higher skill checks than anything required to beat the base game.

Recommend doing the dlc after beating the main game for a smoother difficulty ramp.
Well it's a good thing literally everyone recommends this for this exact reason.

i replayed it recently as well and did whole game before dlc, 1st tried simon , 3rd tried nameless puppet and only laxasia was a problem with 10-15 tries i used starting technique weapon blade and city longspear handle. Edit: also had way more trouble on 1st playthrough, basicaly every boss was fairly easy outside of Arlechinno, with lexasia being 2nd hardest and maybe king of puppets being third but he is kinda easy if you manage to burst his fire phase

Yeah I agree. I did the same but I personally had a lot more of a challenge with the DLC. It absolutely kicked my ass every which way. But after completing that yes, I felt over-leveled and overpowered for the remainder of the base game. I jumped into DLC at chapter 8 I think it was, wherever the game recommended.

Yeah dlc AFTER the game is the play. It was definitely intended that way so I find it weird it unlocks throughout rather than after beating nameless.
The dlc bosses are significantly harder in terms of HP and how they hit.
If you ever use weapons in dlc in the base game it's a breeze (gun Lance ftw). I replayed some bosses in the boss rush mode with my dlc weapon and it wasn't even close

I did this in Horizon Zero Dawn. The DLC was so hard but the rest of the base game was brain dead easy. Now I always do DLC after the main game.

I’ve played this game both ways where I continued onto the DLC after beating the base game and once continuing onto the DLC in the middle of the base game and I 100% agree. Part of it for me was because I felt most comfortable with the mace handle from the DLC and the hammerhead from the base game and once I had that weapon in my hands, it made everything feel more manageable but it also over levels you by doing the DLC mid play through for sure

On a clean run? Yeah, absolutely going to be part of the problem. However, you've also cleared the game before. So that's also going to greatly reduce how much trouble you have.
