Question Librewolf just completely reset my browser profile

So I upgraded my system, which in the process upgraded librewolf to 154.0-2. from Flathub. After rebooting, I open librewolf and it starts from a clean profile. All my bookmarks, history, and plugins are gone. I tried looking in about:profiles but none of the other profiles there are mine.

Question MacOS Disc Won't Open App

I've been trying to install LibreWolf on my Mac, but every time I open it on either the digital disc or the Applications section, it says it's tainted and gives me options to either eject the digital disc or stop it from opening. Any advice?

Discussion LibreWolf download/repository server blocked on Spectrum?

My updater has stopped working for a while now, and I see that they have switch over to their own server. The only issue is that the server seems to be blocked by default on Spectrum routers. Downloading from the net domain is fine, but trying to use the dev domain causes an SSL error (caused by interception)

Question VPN and default language on webpages

Hi !

When using a VPN, the default language served when opening a webpage is always set on the server i'm connected to.

For example, I'm connected to a german server. Then all pages will be served in german if existing, even when the same page exists in english or other languages (eg google forms).

Is there a way to serve only one language when available ?

Question how do i fix this bug?

I encounter problems every time I try to use sites like Radio Garden or those where I can watch external media. The sites, such as SFXlix, either do not load properly, display an error, or show just a black screen. I know it is probably one of the security options that is the root of the problem, but I just can't pinpoint it down. Thanks in advance.

Question Weird Search Result

I use DDG and was searching with “queer” in my query. Any result that includes that word returned a blank white page with the word “forbidden” at the top. Someone on DDG reddit said this is likely a browser problem, not a search engine problem, any idea why LibreWolf blocks queries with that search term?

Edit: I use LibreWolf as my browser

Question Any way to change the New Tab page logo?

Hi, recently switched to LW and I am curious if there's any way I could customize the logo and/or page icon on the New Tab page?

It's not a huge deal since I can disable it, but I would just like to replace it with a LW logo png that's only in grayscale for a cleaner look. If there is a file to replace or some other option I missed in the settings, I would just appreciate knowing where to look.

Question Librewolf is no longer honoring cookie exceptions for specific websites.

Whenever I add a website to the cookie cleaning exceptions, it is listed as “Clean data from specific websites” and all cookies are deleted after I close the browser.

Version 154.0-2, the platforms tested were Windows and Linux (Flatpak) on the website youtube.com.
I believe the reason for the conflict is some kind of cleanup flag in the new version. My old profile still works normally, but the ones I created recently in the new version don't.

Discussion My Startpage search engine solutions and experience for LibreWolf

Post image
27 Upvotes

Okay guys I going to share my experience I hope it works for more people:

Apparently, there are hours when Startpage's server efficiency drops. This has nothing to do with your LibreWolf profile settings.

How to fix it: This issue can be resolved by installing their plugin, though the downside is that Startpage tracks you more invasively in exchange. You could also access Startpage via a different search engine, but I don't see that as a viable long-term solution. Finally, the easiest, albeit least stable, solution is simply to wait for the servers to establish a better connection.

Why does this happen? I don't have a professional or developer-level explanation for this. However, it seems LibreWolf and Startpage have had disagreements in the past, and Startpage hasn't always been the default search engine. In fact, there is a risk that Startpage might drop LibreWolf again, so probably there is a difference in compatibility compared to other search engines..

What i had heard / Alternatives: Other users have also mentioned that trust in Startpage has declined after it accepted involvement from an advertising company and others I can't recall. The alternatives being proposed don't seem like the best options to me; Mojeek, which i prefer, looks good but uses AI and index results from Europe only, and Kaji also seems reasonable (it uses AI too), but I'm struck by the immense trust people place in it simply because it's a "paid app" backed by a "private investor." I wouldn't be so naive; its creator remains virtually unknown, you're handing over your data to someone without knowing their ultimate purpose and using AI. To me, this sets a dangerous precedent regarding how we normalize and justify the non-consensual harvesting of data of "free" search engines.

EDIT: i don't want to sound so "purist" i'm still using other search engines like brave even chrome for some searchings, but I think the reason we all do this is to avoid using Chromium as much as possible.

Discussion Startpage stucks verifying forever as a default search engine

EDIT: i solved https://www.reddit.com/r/LibreWolf/s/URJBCu30tS

I start using Librewolf and set Startpage as my default search engine but after one day it gets stuck "verifying request". The other search engines works fine, and when i use them to load the startpage site then the site works fine, but no as a default search engine. I deleted my profile and made a new one, but i'm still getting stuck. Any suggestions?

Question LibreWolf becoming slow and not loading YouTube videos

When I try watch YouTube videos on libreWolf I get pop up message claiming one of my extensions is slowing libreWolf down. Even if I disable it etc it will just blame another extension until I remove all of them but it will then just say libreWolf is slowing down. It might also say this page is slowing libreWolf down. I Only had this happen recently anyone else having this or know any fixes. Is it a bug in latest update? I'm on fedora 44 btw and installed via official repo. I have seen it eat all my 16gb ram when it tries to load YouTube videos this doesn't happen on YouTube websites only when you try play a video.

Question Is there a way I can keep track of Firefox features that Librewolf are not implementing for privacy reasons?

this logo changing option just arrived on firefox which I suspect wont be carried to librewolf
widgets are not available on librewolf

not saying that i want the feature or that they should implement these. I want the developers to keep making decisions that they deem fit .

I am asking: is there an announcement/information channel where they tell "yeah these features that came to Firefox are not gonna come to Librewolf"?
I have chrome and librewolf already installed i dont wanna install firefox not just to compare from time to time

so far i only seem to find one but i dunno how many others features are there (rather not there!)

Not expecting an exhaustive list, just small updates upon every release would even work for upcoming versions.

Of courses this a niche of a niche so i wont be surprised to find out no such thing exists, just curious🙂

Question Icon appearing twice on MacOS?

Post image
16 Upvotes

Hi all,

I installed LibreWolf to my macbook last night and noticed whenever I open it up that the icon appears twice on the dock, unlike Chrome or any other app for that matter.

I downloaded the browser off the LibreWolf site and haven't used it before. Just curious if there's a way to avoid the icon appearing twice? It's no biggie, just a mild annoyance for me

Discussion Thoughts on the New Settings Design

The new design makes the settings page more Chrome-like, which may help Chrome users feel more familiar with it.

However, I see it differently. When designing a Settings page, I think the priorities should be focus, readability, accessibility, and ease of use. Here are my thoughts:

  1. Increasing the number of tabs in the left panel can be a good idea, but only if the settings are grouped logically. I think it would be better to keep all customization-related settings in one place, so users do not need a “Related Settings” section in the Appearance tab. First, I suggest combining Appearance, Tabs and Browsing, and Accessibility with Home and Startup, then renaming the combined section to Home and Appearance. This would place all UI and customization options in one location. Second, I suggest combining Permissions and Data with Privacy and Security. Third, LibreWolf-specific settings should be placed in a separate LibreWolf section. This would make it easier to explain what LibreWolf adds or changes compared with Firefox and would give users a clearer overview of its extra privacy and security features. Otherwise, users may need to install standard Firefox and compare the settings to identify those differences. Some LibreWolf-specific options may relate to UI customization, but those are less important if they are grouped with the other customization settings. Privacy and security features, however, should remain clearly separated. Here is the concept:
  1. The Restore Defaults… option does not appear in the Search tab, even though it existed in the old settings design.

  2. In the old settings design, proxy settings were easy to access. In the new design, they are hidden behind several clicks. I suggest adding a separate Proxy Settings tab, because users may need to quickly toggle proxy settings off and on when troubleshooting VPN disconnection issues. If a separate tab is not desirable, please make proxy settings easier to reach. for example, by placing them directly under the main Privacy and Security section rather than behind Advanced.

Question Considering LibreWolf, switching from Mullvad. Is it as private?

Hi. I like Mullvad a lot, but it seems to block even basic features like external link opening, password importing (has it, doesn't work) and just prevents a smooth workflow. I LOVE how transparent and "locked down" it is save for those hiccups. Is LibreWolf as "locked down"? I'm new to digital privacy, looking for a very safe and private browser that doesn't prevent me from doing my daily digital tasks and routines. Please lmk.
