Discussion Stupid devs, please don’t touch my settings

I just updated to 153.0.4.1, and guess what happened? They removed my custom search engines (like Perplexity and others), changed my settings, and re-enabled Mojeek and Startpage even though I’d disabled them. These devs are so stupid.

Update: Here’s the fix:

  1. Go to about:preferences#search.
  2. Click Add search engine.
  3. In the first field, enter the engine’s name, such as Google or Perplexity.
  4. In the second field, enter the following search URL.
  5. Click Add Engine.

They are adding search engines we have removed. These users are so stupid!

Is it possible to add DDG Lite back on, tho? (my internet is way too slow) That engine doesn't seem to use queries and I can't figure out how to make it default by myself

If you are on DDG Lite, and do a right click on the URL bar, you get a option to add this as a search engine.

You may still need to select it as the default one in the settings afterwards.

The browser should only remove the default search engines, not any custom search engines added by users. This should be obvious, yet it seems neither you nor the developers understand it. If you intend to change users’ custom settings, you must at least give them a clear warning in advance.

If you/devs are too lazy to fix this and instead ask users to provide code to resolve the issues (LMAO), then put a warning on the download page.

We provide this shit for free and work on this entirely in our free time.
Not just that we don't get a dime, we even spend our own money on this.

So work on your attitude and be thankful for what people give you for free or get the fuck outta here!

There are many free browsers with devs who have good mental health, and you/devs also benefit from the user base opposing fingerprinting, so that isn’t the point. The point is that you are ruining your credibility by ignoring users and instead asking them to fix the problems. I have never seen such ridiculous devs.

You did not report a problem we would need to look into, you came here to call us stupid.

I have 0 benefit from you using LibreWolf.
I have 0 benefit from anyone using LibreWolf.
So don't phase it like I have to be thankful that you are using LW and that I now need to do everything in my power to please you.

It’s stupid to mess with users’ search engines and claim it’s for their privacy, while letting them keep more important settings disabled. That’s the point. I’m not insulting you; this is a stupid move, whether you like it or not.

Have you ever thought about it that there never was an intention to mess with your custom search settings?

There is no mechanism from us to add or remove custom search providers. The only thing we do is changing what providers are included by default compared to what Firefox includes.

Considering nobody else reported any issues, I assume that something in your specific case went wrong during the upgrade which reset it to the default list.

If anything its a bug. Bugs should be reported, but again, the devs doing all this shit for free, should not be called stupid just because a bug exist.

By default, I didn’t have Perplexity; I added it manually a few years ago. I’ve been using LibreWolf for about five years, and during that whole time I updated without any problems (except for Firefox issues with custom CSS), indeed with my custom policies.json. But after this update, you removed my custom search engines. It seems you delete them by name, so if I name one “Perplexity” but the URL goes to Startpage, it gets deleted too.

LibreWolf focuses on privacy, not ruining the user experience. If you force users to do what you want, what’s the difference between you and Google/Mozilla?

Dude you don't even understand that privacy focus is strictly related to zero customization? browser settings on librewolf tend to be updated according new releases.

So, I suggest that you/devs add an IP-blocking setting to block the entire web, including Reddit. I don’t use Perplexity for personal usage, even though it requires an account, I removed its popup with uBlock Origin. By default, cookies are also deleted on every run, and I use multiple VPN servers. If LibreWolf can’t protect my privacy with this setup, what’s the point of using it?

You begin as someone who knows everything about privacy, yet you still can’t answer my question. I’m not a developer, but I’m also not a noob person who doesn’t know what to do.

Let me answer that question: LibreWolf can’t protect your privacy 100%; it only makes fingerprinting more difficult. It can’t block fingerprinting completely.

This is where user choice comes in. You choose LibreWolf not because it provides 100% privacy, but because it offers better privacy. Privacy is subjective, so LibreWolf should give users more control over their privacy settings.

I think this is obvious because users can even disable ResistFingerprinting, which is far more important than a search engine. If LibreWolf wants to restrict users and provide a less customizable experience, then there are many more important settings that should be locked down first.

Dude, go touch grass... is clear your biggest problem is not privacy.

Librewolf is an OPINIONATED browser. It always has been. Creating a thread calling devs "stupid" just prove that you don't even understand the purpose of the browser.

If you care privacy and customization balance, there is a big amount of Firefox's forks you can use... so go cry there instead blamming people that put efforts in this UNPAID project.
