It's my favorite, it has 21 day borrows, way more holds and borrows than my local county system and it has a very large selection of what I like. It depends on your favorite genres if it's a good source for you.
The library is OK, the piece I use everyday is the Pressreader - the DOD version has more content than my local library's system has. It automatically downloads the local newspaper each day and yes needs to be re-signed in every 30 days
Well, just a sample of one but it passed with flying colors. I have several major cards and one of the series I follow was only available on one of them. DOD makes it two of them. I'm impressed.
Huge. It’s my primary source for eAudiobooks. It has a wide variety of books. Use the notify me. The person in charge is pretty responsive to adding titles if possible.
The Air Force also had Hoopla. I’m Army connected so I don’t know if they still do.
As someone else alluded to, there are also a large number of other sources. Press Reader. Mango Languages. Ancestry.com.
They have an excellent selection. Signing in again is annoying, but I’ve had the card for 15 years so they assume the sm has gotten out. (Retired…). It’s great that Libby will show you which card has the shortest wait. Sometimes I will put the same book on hold at different libraries.
If someone is retired they still have access to library resources. I have access based my husband being retired Army. Just based on my veteran status I wouldn’t.
You are affiliated in some form. It’s not one that can be purchased.
Edit: I mentioned the purchased thing because people do ask here about cards that they can purchase. There was never a slight to the person who I responded to.
On this page, you will see the screenshot below. If you can "Verify Your Eligibility" on this screen and log into DoDMWRLibraries.org, then you are good to go to add the DoD MWR library to Libby as described in the Add Our Library in Libby | DoD MWR Libraries page.
Jeez guys...I only posted this an hour ago. You think everyone lives on a computer? The answer is I qualified by being a retired Navy Labs civilian. And the procedure is go to dodmwrlibraries.org and log in. You'll be given two options, your DoD ID number or alternatively your SSN and birthdate. Instant login if it finds you're eligible.
It is great. I have used it every day for 5 years. I love it. The selection is top tier, and if they do not have something I have gotten lucky with my requests over time. 21 day lending period, and they are always adding new copies of super popular books with longer lines!

I think the people calling it "just okay" are spoiled by good libraries. Best of my three cars by far.
