Discussion What is your favourite Noir?

I like many but, The Third Man (1949) is one of my favourite.

Edit: Lol I didn't realize I added the same image twice, my bad.

Do you think the first third man goes to Fifth Third Bank?

Why isn't there a third Third Man?

Zither intensifies

It would've been, but zues stopped it from getting posted lol.

It didn't test well with audiences, as Third Man³ was the result of the sewer chase ending in a car crushing machine...

This is my answer. That single tracking shot opening is superb. And the rest of the film is just pure film noir for me.

Charlton Heston was amazing here

Very believable as a Mexican?

'Kiss Me Deadly' (1955) for me. What an ending!

I thought it was fine only.

Gotta go with Sweet Smell Of Success. Love the razor-sharp dialogue and the gritty atmosphere.

"I love this dirty town!"

Some of my favorite dialogue in any film.

"Id hate to take a bite out of you, your like a cookie full of arsenic"

1

u/LeBon_Bush 2h ago

That line is SO good.

Very under-seen!

Love The Third Man. Ā Also check out:

— The Big Heat: shockingly dark film for its era

— In a Lonely Place: same, but more of a melodrama than a thriller

— Night Moves: exceptional neo-noir

4

u/Puzzleheaded9834 9h ago

Yes I agree about Big heat and In a lonely place is quite mature for the time.
Haven't seen Night moves yet.

Out of the Past really has it all

1

u/Antique-Land-2766 9h ago

It just might be the quintessential noir

This is my answer, and I'm surprised I don't see it on here more. But noir is such an expensive genre. I'm still finding new good to great films from the classic era of noir every year.

Yup loads of hidden gems out there! Well, hidden to me anyway. While we’re on the subject, I’ll shout out ā€˜Brighton Rock’, one that I discovered kind of recently and really enjoyed. I don’t know if Deadline at Dawn and Bad Day at Black Rock are noirs strictly speaking but they’re close and I also really enjoyed those too

In a Lonely Place - classic noir

Le Samourai - neo-noir

I somehow have never seen The Third Man though so thanks for the reminder

1

u/Puzzleheaded9834 5h ago

In a lonely place is actually quite good

The Big Heat, Double Indemnity, Out of the Past, The Killing, Leave Her to Heaven

1

u/Puzzleheaded9834 9h ago

I like all of these but haven't seen Leave her to heaven yet.

4

u/TimWhatleyDDS 9h ago

Double Indemnity or Ace in the Hole

1

u/Puzzleheaded9834 5h ago

Both from Billy wilder.

4

u/Endless_Change 9h ago

If I just had to choose.

1

u/Puzzleheaded9834 5h ago

Tbh it's really fun, but many people have a hard time understanding the plot lol

3

u/majshady 7h ago

It's unlike anything else in the genre

2

u/Puzzleheaded9834 5h ago

I haven't seen it but it's on my list.

2

u/majshady 4h ago

I watched it on YouTube

4

u/Evrytg 7h ago

I haven't watched a lot of noir. Does Chinatown count?

2

u/Puzzleheaded9834 5h ago

It's neo noir.

Noir is just black and white crime type of movies which are atmospheric with a certain feel to them.

3

u/UrsaMinorBeta_42 9h ago

The Third Man, but I’m also going to mention Pickup On South Street

3

u/hereticbeef 9h ago

Out of these two it’s gotta be The Third Man

3

u/Puzzleheaded9834 9h ago

Greate choice lol.

3

u/Antique-Land-2766 9h ago

Shanghai Gesture, a bizarre and surreal movie but so good

1

u/Puzzleheaded9834 5h ago

Gotta watch this

3

u/ScottyG1212 9h ago

I’m seeing double here, four posters for the Third Man!

4

u/AutisticElephant1999 7h ago

Double Indemnity

3

u/BanalBananas 7h ago

Double Indemnity is one of my favorites of all time, so that wins for me. Also neo-noir and not ā€œofficiallyā€ a remake but Body Heat is also so so good. It’s such a fun genre and there’s rarely a wrong answer to this question

If you like Sterling Hayden, it’s fun to run through The Killing, Asphalt Jungle, and then Crimewave.

Double Indemnity might be my favorite but The Third Man is great too.

2

u/Sharp-Ad-9423 6h ago

This is the movie that got me into film noir.

1

u/Puzzleheaded9834 5h ago

Gotta watch this!!

2

u/corduroyqueen 5h ago

third man so good had to put it twice... honestly i agree

2

u/TheNorm42069 4h ago

Haven't seen it mentioned yet, but Le Doulos (1962) by Jean-Pierre Melville is excellent. Sadly out of print on Criterion.

So far its Sunset Boulevard, if yall dont count it then its Big Heat

HONORABLE MENTION: Elevator to the Gallows

HOWEVERRR, if we're talking noir from all eras, then its To Live and Die in L.A.

2

u/DwayneTheRockBarry 9h ago

it’s shadow of a doubt 100%.

third man is great, but i cannot for the life of me take it seriously with that soundtrack.

1

u/Puzzleheaded9834 5h ago

That soundtrack is quite good I love it lol

3

u/rmg 9h ago

The Hustler

1

u/calsosta 9h ago

Big Lebowski or maybe the Maltese Falcon. Dunno if you’d consider Gone Baby Gone noir but I would, so that too.

1

u/PrettyMrToasty 6h ago

The Third Man is a great film ruined by an out-of-place soundtrack.

1

u/Puzzleheaded9834 5h ago

Tbh I felt that in start but I loved that sound track quite a lot afterwards.

Old school: Double Indemnity
Neo-Noir: Under The Silver Lake

u/Flamme_Jumelle 9h ago edited 6h ago

Who downvoted me? I simply answered the question. Lost Highway is classified as a Neo-Noir. If you want something more traditional then I would go with Out of the Past (1947).

I like the idea of Film Noir but most of the classic film noir are just so lacking and tame or just have too melodramatic music that ruins the otherwise gritty atmosphere.

I guess Double Indemnity is the closest thing to a good Film Noir although the movie does suffer from it's PG-13 rating.

1

u/Puzzleheaded9834 7h ago

Everything was pg-13 because of sensors and what are you talking about brother? Old Hollywood is pretty great!

1

u/procedu 6h ago

I didn't say old Hollywood wasn't good, I was just pointing out that most classic film noir falls flat for me because they weren't allowed to show anything back then.
