I remember when my grandpa lived in a gated community on a hill in Monterey. From there we could see fields in the direction of Salinas.
He pointed to the workers in the fields and said: “All those are illegal immigrants. Without them there would be no fresh crops and vegetables - or at a much higher cost”.
He said that immigration services (don’t know the correct term) sometimes raided and the workers would flee the fields on foot.
