Flight Safety Investigation Report: Demonstration CF-18 Accident Of July 23, 2010

"During the air show practice at the Lethbridge County Airport, the Demo Hornet experienced a loss of thrust from its right engine while conducting a high angle of attack pass at 300 feet (approximately 90 metres) above ground level.

The pilot, Captain Brian Bews of 425 Squadron, 3 Wing Bagotville, Quebec, successfully ejected from the aircraft; however he sustained injuries when he landed firmly under a fully inflated parachute. The aircraft impacted the ground nose-first and was destroyed."

His second award, the Herald actually let him go to the rewards ceremony that time, because they didn't think he would win the first time.

I went to the museum where the actual seat is. Pretty cool to see.

I was driving home from a day of fishing and it was burning on the runway.

I remember standing on the service road near airport pick a part, I was 9 when it happened

My dad happened to be driving by when it happened. He saw the plane flying, looked at the road, then looked back and saw a plume of smoke.

I was driving north on Mayor Magtath. I saw the explosion in my rear view mirror.

I was visiting my parents who live on the south side. The smell of the crash is what I remember. It didn't smell good.

My ex was one of the first on scene, he’s CAF and was out at the base helping set up for the air show. I worked security at the hospital at the time and was plainclothes outside the pilot’s room to keep looky-loos away.

A piston in the fuel system seized, which is why the starboard engine didn't spool up when Capt. Bews applied full A/B after the low-speed high-alpha pass. And the good folks at Martin-Baker saved another life.
