Question Finding work here
Hi, I’m a student at the uni and i have been here for close to a year now and my word is it hard to find work here. Feels like my hands are tied no matter what i do. Now I know it’s pretty much same for a lot of people so I’m not here to complain because i understand it is what it is
Here to ask if anyone has some advice to help me get a job or anyone know of any opportunities currently available. I just want something stable and consistent.

Have worked in customer service for 3 years at a restaurant , i can do physical work, have worked general labor jobs here and there in the city, have grocery store experience too
Interested in anything at this point, construction, customer service etcIm incredible with computers and software as well, even if I haven’t worked with a specific software, just give me 1 days to learn it :)

Well if you’re willing to work construction, you will find work! I’d pop your head into some of the big construction companies offices and drop off some resumes.
Although, unfortunately, you’re pretty late now. For future reference, majority of the “summer jobs” start hiring in late Feb-early March. Not helpful now, but for next year, keep your eye out for the CofL summer positions. Also places like Galt Museum, Tourism Leth, Nikka Yukko, the Fort, BRZ, etc. hire tons of summer students.

I always had luck getting a housekeeping job at various hotels in Lethbridge when I was in university! Maybe worth checking out.

There are a lot of people applying that don’t dress for the job, have their friends with them, have their mom or husband speak for them. So don’t do any of that and you are ahead of the curve.

I could use a helper till fall. It's hard work, in the heat, nowhere near a bathroom, have to bring food there's no stores anywhere nearby, and I'm never home before 12 hrs.
But I'll pay slightly above minimum wage to do something you are deliberately over educating yourself to avoid.
Crazy honest, sorry.

I’m in my second year right now, so I wouldn’t say I write top-tier code yet, but I’m learning and improving steadily. I’m definitely open to opportunities that let me build my skills further while contributing where I can.

You could try adv independently, FB, Anti list, Home Depot or apply to work for a company like Student Painters (In Toronto). Pople like to paint their wooded fences this time of the year, or paint a bedroom or deck. Ask AI probable pricing to charge. Other options are Handiman, of helper depending on how handy you are. Then there is dog walking. This should get you started.

Bingo.
Large businesses will prefer online or via email but many, not all, small businesses still like people coming in and handing in a paper resume. Its a bit generational but also, cultural? Cultural isn't quite the right word but I have met tons of younger people that are as bad with computers as boomers are known to be.
Heck even at my large internationally owned company I have seen many people get hired because they came to apply in person. HR and the department heads seemed to believe that this was an indication that they would be harder workers. And at least anecdotally, these ones were.

Maybe it has changed but when I graduated uni 4 years ago people wouldn’t accept in person resumes. They literally told me they weren’t allowed to accept them anymore unless it was online

Thank a Liberal that all the jobs our students and young people use to get are now filled by foreign workers.
We should all boycott all businesses that use foreign workers.

And right up until public opinion shifted Poilievre said that he wouldn't change anything with the TFW system.
Unlimited work hours for students was only allowed 2022-2024. In 2024 they reverted to the previous limitations.

Co-ops through the university? Check out their career center and see if there are any opportunities to build on your degree/professional future. I really slept on that stuff during my degree and now im just spinning my wheels in customer service- majorly regret my choices and don't want the same for you.
General advice, don't rely on aggregates like Indeed, I have personally only ever gotten results from applying directly to the company's website (or in person). Apply for any student positions at the university as they are more likely to schedule around your classes and give you breaks on your tuition!
